1 Due to shrinking IT staffing and budgets, many IT organizations are turning to Service Providers for hosting of business-critical systems and applications (i.e., web hosting, hosting, and database hosting) as well as providing a secure remote facility for offsite data protection and disaster recovery. Businesses look to leverage these services as an extension of their own IT infrastructure and appreciate the ability to convert Capital Expenses (CAPEX) to Operational Expenses (OPEX). However, when a company elects to use a Service Providers services instead of housing a server internally, the onus for the protection and availability of those services fall firmly on the Service Provider s head. A Service Provider may commit to certain availability SLA s that invoke penalties if not met and, as such, the servers in the data center will warrant varying degrees of protection. To this end you will find that Service Providers need a robust set of tools in order to comply with these varying requirements. Hosted systems are usually virtualized in order to benefit from economies of scale and any data protection or availability solutions will thus need to scale as the services grow. And finally, considering services are typically sold on a monthly SaaS-based model any up-front expenses for a Service Provider will affect both their time to profit and cash flow. Service Providers will therefore benefit from any costs that match the way they do business (i.e. payment for what is used only once it s used). Data Protection and Recovery CA ARCserve offers service providers two different backup software solutions to address different needs. File-based Backup with CA ARCserve Backup CA ARCserve Backup provides file-level backup to disk and tape and supports a broad set of operating systems, applications, and virtualization platforms. While it is designed to protect both physical and virtual server environments, it includes unique virtualization technologies for Service Providers that typically leverage a virtualized server data center infrastructure. To start, CA ARCserve Backup supports a complex IT environment with multiple operating systems, virtualization platforms and applications. CA ARCserve Backup includes key features designed for Service Providers that offer hosting services including centralized deployment, management and reporting, a comprehensive backup dashboard to monitor all data protection, Storage Resource Management (SRM) reporting to monitor storage across the data center, and Infrastructure Visualization to help manage the environment and avoid issues like CPU and storage over- 1

2 utilization that can cause unplanned outages and data loss. It also includes built-in data deduplication that helps address exponential data growth by reducing backup storage requirements by up to 95% depending on the type of data, a key differentiator in any data protection service. Service Providers can backup entire virtual servers at the host level, or select individual virtual machines (VMs). CA ARCserve Backup And if you want to leverage a public cloud service to supplement your own data center resources for disaster recovery, CA ARCserve Backup offers integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS/S3) to be able to migrate backups offsite. This is a great solution for Hosting Service Providers that don t have their own remote data center. Once backups are migrated to the cloud, you can do any level restore right from the cloud. We refer to this as a hybrid-cloud solution. Image-based Backup with CA ARCserve D2D CA ARCserve Backup with Offsite Backup Migration For hosting environments that are strictly Microsoft Windows-based, CA ARCserve D2D is recommended. CA ARCserve D2D is an image-based backup solution that delivers block-level Infinite Incremental (I 2 Technology ) backup for fast and frequent backup to disk. This patent-pending technology not only speeds backup to help you meet your customers backup windows, it can significantly reduce backup storage requirements, the impact to the production server and the amount of data transmitted across the network. 2

3 And since backups are stored on disk, data recovery can typically occur far faster than recovery from tape, delivering better recovery time objectives (RTOs) to help address demanding service level agreements (SLAs). CA ARCserve D2D is used to protect both physical and virtual servers and includes unique virtualization technologies such as VMware changed block tracking (CBT) designed for image-based backup. Service Providers can perform backups at the host level protecting all VMs on the physical server, or choose to protect individual VMs, to address the diverse range of customer needs. It includes centralized deployment, management and reporting and with its unique Web 2.0 interface, administrators have easy access to user manuals, technical support, and product-specific social media websites to make this solution easier to use. Even software upgrades are made easier with built-in automated upgrade technology. CA ARCserve Backup & CA ARCserve D2D Integration While image-based backup may be the right solution for your data center, some clients may demand tape support for long term storage and archiving. We ve integrated CA ARCserve D2D and CA ARCserve Backup so Service Providers can migrate CA ARCserve D2D backups to CA ARCserve Backup tape devices and media. Recovery is quick and simple right from the CA ARCserve D2D console no matter where data is stored. CA ARCserve D2D CA ARCserve Backup & CA ARCserve D2D Integration CA ARCserve D2D also has cloud integration built-in. In this case, hybrid-cloud data protection enables Service Providers to perform onsite image-based backup and then migrate and archive critical files and data offsite to Amazon Web Services (AWS/S3). If local storage is lost or unavailable, Service Providers can recover data directly from the cloud. 3

4 CA ARCserve D2D with File/Folder Copy to the Cloud Continuous Data Protection with CA ARCserve Replication Today, Hosting Service Providers are gaining a competitive advantage and new profitable service by offering real-time data replication services as a complementary service to backup. In many cases, periodic backups or snapshots just don t deliver the recovery point objectives (RPO) needed for business-critical and applications and databases. These environments require continuous data protection and Service Providers should use CA ARCserve Replication. This solution protects data on Windows, Linux and UNIX servers and supports both physical and virtual server environments. Whether data is stored on DAS, NAS or SAN, you can offer your clients real-time data replication to another server/storage device whether located in the data center or a remote location. CA ARCserve Replication offers Service Providers non-disruptive deployment along with centralized management and reporting. You also get automated, non-disruptive recovery testing that adds another level of protection and strong competitive differentiator. CA ARCserve Replication is a perfect complement to CA ARCserve Backup and CA ARCserve D2D. 5 System Protection and Recovery Hosting Service Providers need more than just data protection, They need ways to achieve fast system recovery and even high availability depending on the SLAs to which they agree. CA ARCserve offers Service Providers three different solutions for system protection and recovery. Each solution is designed to meet specific RTOs and RPOs. This flexibility enables Service Providers to offer different service levels, each with their own value-based pricing. CA ARCserve D2D BMR CA ARCserve D2D offers two key system recovery technologies. The most basic is hardware-independent Bare Metal Recovery (BMR). This solution uses a BMR boot disk and uses D2D image recovery points to restore a complete physical server or virtual machine (VM), including operating system, application and data, to the same or dissimilar hardware. BMR can slash system recovery time by 80% over having to re-install a complete operating system and application from scratch. CA ARCserve D2D Virtual Standby While CA ARCserve D2D s BMR technology certainly speeds system recovery, Service Providers can also offer Virtual Standby as an even faster (and higher priced) system recovery service solution. CA ARCserve D2D combined with CA ARCserve Central Virtual Standby automatically converts periodic CA ARCserve D2D recovery points (from physical and virtual server backups) into VMware and Hyper-V virtual disk formats and installs and registers those virtual disks with the appropriate virtual server hypervisor. This solution includes system monitoring and offers both automated and manual failover to the local virtual server after a system outage is detected. System, Application and Data High Availability For customer s that require near continuous system and data availability for critical file, application and database servers, Hosting Service Providers use CA ARCserve High Availability. This solution works with Windows, Linux and UNIX servers and supports both physical and virtual server environments. CA ARCserve High Availability includes all CA ARCserve Replication features, and adds real-time system and application monitoring, automatic and push-button failover, and push-button failback after the production server is repaired or replaced. CA ARCserve High Availability CA ARCserve High Availability also includes integrated cloud support for Amazon Web Services (AWS/EC2). The process includes full system replication to the cloud where the image is kept offline until needed. The system performs system and application monitoring and can be configured for automatic or push-button failover. If a system or application fails, the last full system image replicated to the cloud is applied to a virtual machine and stood-up. End-users are automatically redirected and failover is near-instantaneous, keeping clients productive while data center resources are repaired or replaced. 7 Licensing The CA Technologies ARCserve MSP Program licensing for virtual environments is cost effective and is charged monthly, based on usage. Licenses for CA ARCserve Backup, CA ARCserve D2D, CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability are based on the number of sockets in the virtual host. For example, a single socket virtual host with 20 guests/vm s would only require 1 license. The CA ARCserve D2D Advanced Virtual Edition per host license includes both Host-level backup and Virtual Standby. CA Technologies also offers storage-based pricing (per TB) for those Service Providers who prefer that model.
