Are they all important for new student assessment? What method and process would you use to assess? GROUP #1 NOTES (Dr. Alonzo): Most important life skills: 3

What they can to do improve areas ~ Guidance 8 ~ Talk to Delecia time for review, test ~ Evaluate other schools to see if their ideas are working GROUP #2 NOTES cont.(debora Louie): Moving Forward ~ Complete New Student Self-Assessment after Assessment Placement, of Admissions Application or before registration/survey/before making counseling appointment ~ send what constitutes a successful student? Questions ~ How are students prompted about the test? ~ Explain the relevance/importance of the self-assessment tool. ~ Recommendation - Counselors should/want to provide input to the prompts given to student before completing assessment tool. How? Meeting to develop survey, screen assessment questions Who? Meeting with Sharmila, Tony, Pablo, Pat, Cheuyengther (Tony will set up meeting) When? On Friday after all Counselors Meeting Discussion: Deb kids good in math fail Accelerated Learning, math, accelerated students did as good or better than. Allowed all students to enter into accelerate math class. Not an entry or exit from one class to the next. Students in did as well as or better. Janice - Use new student assessment, do workshops based on the resulting need. Spend time with counselors to come up with ideas to use this assessment. Yolanda Target upper level/low level. Move most successful forward. 5

6 Guided Inquiry #4 ALL COUNSELORS (two groups) Crisis Counseling (Session 1) As a counselor, what type of student problems need immediate attention? What would be a working definition of a student in crisis? GROUP #1 NOTES: Group #1 Definition: Any situation that presents a student s cognitive ability to function in a positive way. (see Group #2 notes for final definition) 1. Suicide harming self or others 2. Student who has been harmed (violence towards self by others) 3. Exhibits inappropriate behavior in a college setting 4. Faculty referred student 5. Any student who has been through a Traumatic experience 6. Student who is thinking of harming self 7. Depressions (situational) 8. Drug/alcohol addiction 9. Stress induced anxiety, I failed a test! 10. Financial problems 11. Family problems GROUP #2 NOTES: ~ Suicidal ~ Threat to others ~ Threat to self ~ Domestic Violence Assault/Rape ~ Homelessness ~ Depression ~ Grief/Loss ~ Eating Disorders ~ Medical illness self or significant other ~ Legal Issues ~ Financial Issues Group #2 Definition of student in crisis: CHOSEN BY BOTH GROUPS AS THE OPERATIONAL DEFINITION One who is at immediate risk of, harming self or others, or is experiencing a stressful life event that interferes with their ability to function adequately (e.g. victim of violence, agitation, depression, anxiety, grief/loss). What specific method/process needed to create an inter & intra department understanding of this definition?? How will you accomplish this (e.g. focus groups, ad hoc committee, Friday 6
