Program Example Everyone wins CUNY NYACH Institute New MA curriculum & program 10 Institute staff members enrolled now Many Benefits Participants Employers (Institute) Partners
Goals NYACH Overview Engage employers in the identification of short and long-term labor force needs Partner with training providers to align and implement training programs to directly respond to these needs. Objectives Develop workforce programs that address high demand occupations and emerging roles and skills Partner with community colleges to redesign/enhance curriculum based on employer input Improve career ladder opportunities for job seekers and incumbent allied health staff
Impetus for MA Program Findings of a 2011 Center for Health Workforce Studies study titled Supply of and Demand for Medical Assistants in New York City : MRT and ACA would result in a significant increase in the number of jobs and services for the ambulatory health care setting Concludes that this shift in policy and increased demand for basic health services should result in the training of more medical assistants. NYACH found that although Medical Assistant training was widely available in New York City, employers in the region found that many of the training programs were inadequate or out of date
NYACH Response NYACH convened CHCANYS, a few FQHC s, CUNY Central, and administrators from Lehman College and Borough of Manhattan Community College Goal was to update the Clinical Medical Assistant training curriculum at the two colleges to better meet the needs of employers and include the following: Both strong clinical and administrative skills Care coordination principles and Patient Centered Medical Home concepts Background on healthcare system and reform Professional development workshop and strong internship program
New MA Program Resulted in a pilot program New curriculum with 350 classroom hours and 180 hour internship Employer engagement Opportunity to meet healthcare provider workforce needs and provide career ladder opportunity for entry level staff
Program Partnership with SBS Partnered with the NYC Department of Small Business Services goal to cultivate a qualified workforce in order to help businesses meet their needs SBS funds Individual Training Grants (ITG s) for high-demand occupations, including Medical Assistants Opportunity to support tuition costs for qualified candidates RESULT: multi-stakeholder collaborative to train Certified Medical Assistants
Future Plans Together Working through internship logistics Recruitment/expansion New cohort to begin January 2014!
What are the participants saying? This is such an amazing opportunity for advancement, I m so happy! I ve never been given a chance like this before. I m really enjoying the classes, a lot to learn. The program is great. I m actually enjoying it. It sure is going by fast, August 1st we ll have our BCLS (CPR) class which I m super excited for. Overall the program is great, so glad I decided to move forward with it. Thanks for the push.
