6 Questionnaires Our hypothesis: Majority of Students write notes with pen & paper in lectures. Team has regular meetings since this is the best form of communication. 10 Analysing questionnaire results Part 3:Team work Over half the sudent have at least 2 teamprojects in Semester The rest have more than 2 projects in semester To stay in contact, students use 100%Meetings 55%Mobile Phone 55% 55% StudiVZ or Facebook tool that let students communicate and exchange data effectively could lead to a more efficient and innovative work.

11 Analysing questionnaire results Part 4:Backup Over half the student surveyed have lost their data at least once have no buckup because they didn't know how to make it but they wish to have a backup for free. This means that students are aware of the important of making a backup but they don't know how to make it.

13 Digitizing Handwriting Tablet PC with Microsoft OneNote2007 Advantages: Typo corrections can be made on the spot. Additional space can be added to a page by moving the lower content down Disadvantages: You cannot see all of the page at once like with paper. Distraction! Way too many buttons! Expensive Tablet PC has only 4 hours battery life. Converting handwritten Layout is not implemented. You have to do it office style

14 Digitizing Handwriting Tablet PC with Windows Journal Simple like a sheet of paper Journal is capable of using text recognition, but the layout gets lost in the process. Then, the Tablet PC is heavy and expensive, batteries last only for a few hours.

15 Digitizing Handwriting Scanner or Camera with OCR Software 1. Everybody has a camera on his mobile phone. So take a picture of the text you have written and put it into a OCR Scansoftware The result is very poor. Abby, one of the better OCR Scansoftwares on the market is not able to recognize handwriting and identifies it as graphics instead.

Handwriting recognition software for most smartpens on the market is MyScriptNotes from VisionObjects. The handwriting recognition is impressive, but not flawless. Layout gets converted, too. Correcting typos from your old notes is no fun because it is additional work.

18 Browsing through digitalized notes Research contains Notes, Bookmarks, Sketches, Webpages and other kinds of documentation. In the beginning, this is only sorted over the timeline. To allow a quick skimming through your notes that is necessary to reconfigure your data, we implement a tool similar to cooliris to browse the content of the notes. Another way to find documents is to search for Tags that have been assigned to them. Tags have to be identified by the handwriting recognition and become part of the file as metadata. Don t browse your notes like this... but like that!

19 Syncronisation & backup Software requirements Automatic Sync after connecting the USB Stick Syncronisation of a specified folder every 10 Minutes Dynamic Drive Letter of the USB Stick has to be recognized if it runs from a USB Stick Graphical User Interface for setting up personal sync locations by average users Software has to run from the USB Stick (without Installation on the Computer that is being used) Toucan, a freeware software is capable of all these requirements

20 Teamwork Solutions Services, Capabilities and Price ranges, tests Since Students usually meet at least once a week, Groupware Applications are not that important. Some Web 2.0 applications should be sufficient to fulfill the needs of a student team during research and concept phase. They are free and don t need installations on a pc. Digitizing of handwritten notes Groupware for improved team management Automated flow of information and data within a team structure Personal data syncronisation over a range of computers Automatic backup in the background The sum of all these components should add up to a big synergy effect as long as the handling does not get too complicated This is not the first custom made software bundle for a special target group, there is a wide range of special software bundles on the market. However it still uses compatible data formats that are more or less standard (MS Office) for team members who decided not to use it.
