1 Exciting news! In the spring of 2014 the EVSC was awarded a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. Our program, Healthy Outlook, is to expand and improve physical education, enhance nutrition education, and address Indiana s physical education standards at six schools: Daniel Wertz, Delaware, Evans, Oak Hill, Scott, and North Jr. High. The grant began May 1, 2014 and continues through April 30, With this award, these schools are focusing on providing and encouraging more physical activity, developing lifelong healthy habits, and creating a healthy school environment. Federal grant dollars provide supplies like balls and jump ropes to get students moving in physical education class, recess, and after school. Nutrition education materials are available to help students make healthy food choices. Professional development and resources are made possible to provide teachers with easy ideas on how physical activity can be included in the academic classroom allowing students to be physically active and focus on studies. A requirement of this federally funded grant is to evaluate our work in physical activity and nutrition education and awareness. To collect this data, students in kindergarten through 8 th grade are randomly selected using a computerized process to decide who will participate representing their peers. Selected students wear a pedometer for measuring steps/physical activity at home and school for four to seven consecutive days. They are also challenged on their fitness and strength through the Presidential Youth Fitness Program using the FitnessGram evaluation tool. In addition, these students complete a short questionnaire regarding healthy lifestyle choices. A three-day activity recall questionnaire is also completed by the selected students in grades 5 through 8. and two evaluations took place in year one. Two evaluations took place in year two, and there will be two evaluations in year three. We encourage all students who are randomly selected to participate to the best of their ability in the evaluation process. PEP data will never be shared on individual students, but as a total of the grant school populations. Below is a snapshot of the baseline, year one and year two data.
