1 Technology Department ` PBS One to One (OTO) Program Price: The OTO fee is $450 per year (9 th grade) and $400 per year (10 th 12 th ) and includes: use of a PBS owned laptop for the year insurance on the computer (see below) all course required software four years of virus protection web filtering services school provided along with spam filtering laptop lockers with laptop charges and built in electronic locks (total of 40 lockers available) access to the school s printers and 250 printed pages per semester high speed wireless Internet access on campus availability of tech support while on campus and additional support via after hours loaner computer when necessary (eliminating time without a computer) monitoring software that allows teachers to keep every Student on task major data loss protection (periodic backups of saved files onto a secure server) Insurance: Any accidentally damaged computer that requires repair (as deemed necessary by the Technology Department) will incur a $100 accidental damage deductible. This covers damages such as cracked screens, liquid damage due to spilled drinks, dropped computers, etc. Laptop Use Agreement This agreement is made effective upon receipt of the laptop computer. The agreement is between Parkview Baptist School, the Student receiving the laptop and his/her parent(s) or legal guardian. The Student and Parent(s) or legal guardian agree to the following while using a PBS provided laptop computer, software and any related materials while an enrolled Student at PBS. Equipment Ownership: PBS retains ownership of the laptop and grants permission to the Student to use the laptop according to the guidelines defined. The PBS Technology Department and its administrative staff retains the right to collect and/or inspect the laptop at any time, including via electronic access; and similarly to alter, add or delete installed software or hardware. Transfer of Ownership: Upon graduation and having participated in the laptop program for at least two years, the ownership of the laptop will transfer from PBS to the Student. The Technology Department will alter the laptop so that it is no longer a member of the PBS network. If the Student has not participated in the laptop program for two years, information on buying the laptop from the school may be requested Parkview Church Road Baton Rouge, LA (225)

2 Equipment Provided: All laptops provided include ample RAM and hard drive space, software necessary for school life, and other miscellaneous items. PBS retains the serial numbers and service tag numbers of all laptops. Students will keep the same laptop throughout their high school career unless it is replaced due to damage or loss. Replacement of Laptop: PBS has a limited number of loaner laptops for use when the Student s laptop is being repaired. This agreement remains in effect for the loaner laptop checked out to the Student as well. The Student may NOT opt to keep a broken laptop or to avoid using the laptop due to loss or damage. Since PBS owns the laptops until the Student graduates, it is in the school s best interest to insure ALL laptops are in optimal working conditions at all times. (Please note that if a Student forgets to bring the computer or power adapter to school, a substitute will not be provided. We do however provide a limited number of laptop charging lockers that can be utilized by Students on a first come, first served basis.) Responsibility for Electronic Data: The Student is solely responsible for any non school installed software and for any data stored on the computer. It is the sole responsibility of the Student to backup such data as necessary. PBS provides a means for backup along with directions, but PBS does not accept responsibility for any such files or software. Damage or Loss of Equipment Warranty for Equipment Malfunction: PBS has purchased a manufacturer s warranty covering parts and labor. The warranty only covers damage to the computer caused by manufacturer s defects. Families incur no additional charges for repairs covered by warranty. Responsibility for Damage: The Student is responsible for maintaining a 100% fully functional computer at all times. The Student shall use reasonable care to ensure that the computer is not damaged. Refer to the Guidelines for Proper Care document for a description of expected care. In the event of damage not covered by the warranty, the Student and/or Parent will be billed each time the computer has to be sent off. There are other minor costs that occur to repair smaller issues that do not require the computer to be sent off. The following is a list of charges for minor repairs conducted by the Help Desk: o Keyboard Repair (re attaching keys or replacing entire keyboard) $10 o Applying a new serial tag or ID sticker that was removed $10 o Cracked Screen $100 o Broken Power Cord $60 (PBS reserves the right to charge the Student and Parent the full cost for repair or replacement when damage occurs due to gross negligence) Responsibility for Loss: In the event the computer is lost or stolen the Student/ Parent will be billed the full cost of the laptop. If the computer is recovered within three weeks of the first day it was missing, all but a $100 administrative charge will be refunded. Actions Required in the Event of Damage or Loss: Report the problem immediately to the Technology Department. If the computer is stolen or vandalized while not at PBS, the Parent shall file a police report. Technical Support and Repair: PBS does not guarantee that the computer will be operable after it is returned, but will expedite any additional technical support, maintenance or repair if deemed necessary. Monitoring: PBS will monitor computer use through a variety of methods including but not limited to electronic remote access in order to assure full compliance with the PBS Responsible Network Use Agreement. A Student s laptop will NEVER be monitored while off campus. Legal and Ethical Use: All aspects of the PBS Responsible Network Use Agreement remain in effect, except as mentioned in this section. File sharing and File sharing Programs: The installation and/or use of any Internet based file sharing tool is strictly prohibited. File sharing programs and protocols like BitTorrent, Limewire, Kazaa, Acquisition, Frostwire, PirateBay and others may not be used to facilitate the illegal sharing of copyrighted material (music, video, software and images). Individuals with legitimate school related needs must seek prior written approval from the Technology Department in order to use tools related to this subject. Allowable Customizations: The Student is permitted to alter and/or add files to customize the assigned computer to their own working styles (i.e. default fonts and other system enhancements). 3 permitted to install approved software on their computer so long as it is legally owned and installed as per a license agreement, excepting any software known to cause system problems to the computer. We strongly suggest that Students minimize external installations since they can cause unforeseen system errors, in which case we may be forced to restore the computer to the original settings and everything stored will be erased. Also, PBS will periodically conduct maintenance that will require the Student to re install all non PBS software and files. (Note: the software originally installed by PBS must remain on the computer at all times.) Additionally: Adhere to the PBS Responsible Network Use Agreement at all times and in all locations. When in doubt about acceptable use, please do not hesitate to ask the Help Desk. Guidelines for Proper Laptop Care This document is an important addendum to the OTO Program s Laptop Acknowledgement Form. Read it carefully prior to signing. You are expected to follow all the specific guidelines listed in this document and to take any additional common sense precautions necessary to protect your assigned laptop. Loss or damage resulting from failure to abide by the details below may result in added financial responsibility. Always completely close the lid before moving it even for short distances. Movement while the computer is on can result in permanent damage to the hard drive and therefore the loss of all data. Sleep mode is sufficient for times between regular uses there is little reason to actually shut down the laptop other than on an airplane or during extended days of inactivity. Restart your computer every Monday morning in order to apply all important updates. Always store the computer in a laptop sleeve or backpack. Do not squeeze the computer. This can damage the screen or a number of other components. Screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure. Broken screens will cost $100 to replace. Do not touch the computer screen with anything (e.g., your finger, pen, pencil, etc.) other than approved computer screen cleaners. Only clean the screen with a soft, dry anti static cloth or with a screen cleaner designed specifically for LCD type screens only. Never leave any object on the keyboard. Closing your laptop with any paper in it can break the hinges. Pens/pencils left on the keyboard will damage the screen after closing the lid. Do your best to keep the computer away from dust and dirt. Arrive to school each day with a fully charged battery. Close the lid of the computer when it is not in use in order to save battery life and protect the screen. Bring the laptop to school with the battery fully charged each day. There are secure charging stations outside of the Technology Department, but they are available on a first come first serve basis. We will not provide substitute computers or chargers in the case of uncharged batteries. Avoid storing your laptop in a vehicle because extreme temperatures may damage the laptop. Do not let anyone use the laptop other than your parents or guardians. Loss or damage that occurs when anyone else is using your assigned laptop will be your full responsibility. Never share passwords. Never use your password to help someone else log on to the Internet or their computer. Keep the laptop either locked (i.e. locked in your school locker, home or other secure place where others do not have access) or attended (with you or within your sight) at all times. Keep the laptop stored in a secure place when you cannot directly monitor it. Please be aware that laptops left in unattended bags or in unlocked classrooms are considered unsecured and may be picked up by school personnel as a protection against theft. Adhere to the OTO Program s Laptop Use Agreement. When in doubt about acceptable use, ask someone within the Technology Department. Back up your data. Never consider any electronic information fail proof when it is only stored on one device. Establish a routine at home preferably nightly to back up your files. You can back up timesensitive, large data, and even media based files using flash drives or external hard drive. Read and follow general maintenance alerts from the Technology Department personnel. 4 General Care Promptly report any problems to the Technology Help Desk or via to Do not remove or change the physical structure of the laptop, including the keys, any screws, screen cover or plastic casing. Doing so will void the warranty and families will be responsible for 100% of the repair or replacement cost. Do not remove or interfere with the serial number or any identification decals placed on the laptop. Removing any serial number or identification sticker will result in a $10 replacement fee. If the stickers are wearing off naturally, bring the laptop by the Help Desk to have a new one applied free of charge. Do not do anything to the laptop that will permanently alter it in any way. Stickers, if they are completely removable without cosmetic damage, may be applied (e.g. clings). Keep the equipment clean. For example, do not eat or drink near the computer. If you need to clean the case or keyboard, unplug the charger along with any additional cables and shutdown the laptop completely first. Then you may use a damp, soft, lint free cloth with glass cleaner, but be sure to avoid getting moisture in any openings. DO NOT spray anything directly on the laptop. Best Practices with the Power Adapter Always plug and unplug from the computer before plugging and unplugging the charger s power outlet. Only power adapters issued with your laptop or purchased by the Technology Department are permissible to be used on the laptop. Using another power adapter will result in forfeiting the warranty on the computer. Do not purchase a power adapter from any outside source. Battery Management and Care Your laptop battery takes approximately 2 3 hours to fully charge. The battery can power the laptop for a full 6 hours or more with careful use. Arrive every day with a fully charged battery. Establish a daily routine at home for recharging. Hibernate and then close the lid of the laptop when it is not in use in order to save battery life and protect the screen. The laptop is designed to wake up rapidly from hibernation so take advantage of that feature. Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. 5 PBS Network Responsible Use Policy For High School Students The primary goal of the available technology at PBS is to enrich the learning that takes place in and out of classrooms. However, certain legal and ethical restrictions do apply with these benefits. Academic work for courses always takes priority over any other use of the computer equipment. The following is a list of rules and regulations that govern the use of PBS computers and network resources. Network Resources refer to all aspects of PBS owned and leased equipment including computers, printers, scanners, and other peripherals as well as Internet services, , servers, network files and folders, and all other technology related equipment and services. These rules apply to any use of PBS network resources for on or off campus access. Students may not use network resources to: create, send, access or download material that is abusive, hateful, harassing or sexually explicit download, stream, or listen to Internet based music, video or large image files not required for school work while on campus, as this slows down the network for all users alter, add, or delete any files that affect the useful configuration of a school computer other than the laptop assigned for personal use conduct any commercial business (this jeopardizes PBS s non profit status) conduct any illegal activity (this includes adhering to copyright laws) access the data or account of another user (altering files of another user is considered vandalism) install any software onto PBS computers other than the laptop assigned to the Student copy PBS school software (copying school owned software programs is considered theft) Note: The Technology Department continuously monitors for violations like these. give out their home address or phone number to anyone on the Internet (this protects users from becoming potential victims of those with criminal intent) give out password(s) to anyone post anonymous messages forward commonly known as SPAM, Unsolicited Commercial (UCE), or junk When using social networking sites, , or instant messaging Students must consider the impact on themselves and on other members of the community and be mindful of school rules and core values. More specifically: Any posting that ends up creating an uninviting atmosphere for any member of our community will be considered a violation of the school s harassment policy. Students should be aware that when their social networking sites identify them as PBS Students, they need to be mindful that they are representing the school. They should not post anything compromising that would then be publicly linked to the school. Students should be aware that many college admissions offices and future employers will look at their applicant s social networking sites if available. Be aware of the future repercussions of your postings. Students should be aware that sending or exchanging sexually explicit messages or photos electronically via cell phone, , or other devices ( sexting ) is very serious and leads to irreversible consequences. The messages or photos may become widely distributed across the Internet with little or no control. At a minimum, the result can be extremely embarrassing and emotionally damaging. Furthermore, the sending, forwarding, or even possession of sexually explicit photos of minors by anyone, including young Students, is a violation of school rules and can be prosecuted as a felony under federal law.school OF File Sharing and File Sharing Programs The installation and/or use of any Internet based file sharing tool is strictly prohibited. Any Student who violates these rules will be subject to disciplinary action. Students who violate the File Sharing rules will also have their hard drives restored to the original settings. The Technology Department reserves the right to use discretion through finding a replacement laptop or suitable educational resource when the rules are repeatedly violated. Legal Issues and Jurisdiction PBS is obligated to take steps in order to ensure that all of the network and resources are used in a legal manor because the school owns and operates the equipment and software that compose our network and resources. Any illegal use of network equipment or resources is strictly prohibited. All content created, sent, accessed, received, uploaded or downloaded using any part of the school s network or resources is subject to the rules stated in this policy. Along with the Technology Department, school administrators monitor the network and may find it necessary to investigate electronic incidents even if they happen after hours and/or outside of the school s campus. As the owners of the network and resources including but not limited to the system, the school administration reserves the right at its discretion to remotely access, open, examine and/or delete electronic files that violate this Network Responsible Use Policy if deemed necessary. URBAN SCHOOL OF SAN FRANCISCO Disclaimer PBS does not have perfect control of the information on the Internet or every incoming . An filtering system is in place along with a reliable Internet filter to protect from sites in direct contrast with the mission of the school. Sites accessible via the Internet may contain material that is defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, illegal or otherwise inconsistent with the mission of PBS. While the intent of PBS is to make the Internet access available for educational goals and objectives, account holders may have the ability to access other materials as well. At PBS we expect Students to obey the Network Responsible Use Policy when using the Internet. Students found in violation of the policy will be disciplined. In addition, PBS account holders take full responsibility for their access to school s network resources and the Internet. 7 FAQs Q: When do I receive my laptop? A: You will receive your computer during the Freshman/New Student Orientation session. All incoming 9 th grade Students and new 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th grade students must attend one of the orientation sessions. Q: What do my parents need to do in order for me to get my laptop? A: Your parents need to read over the Laptop Use Agreement and the Network Responsible Use Policy; Read, sign, and return the Program Acknowledgement Form; Purchase or locate you a laptop case or backpack designed to hold a laptop. Q: Will the school provide a carrying case? A: No, we want you to be free to carry your computer how you wish. When you treat your laptop well it will last longer, so be sure to get a quality case or a backpack designed specifically for laptops. This way, you will reduce the risk of cracking your screen or needing repairs to your computer. Q: Who owns the laptop? A: PBS owns the laptop until you graduate. We will be implementing its software updates and any necessary repairs to the computer to keep it in its best working order. Q: May I take the laptop home? A: Yes, as long as you and your family have signed the appropriate forms, the laptop follows you wherever you go. Once or twice per year the laptops may be collected for routine maintenance, but other than those times the laptop should be in your possession. Q: May I access the Internet and my printer at home with my laptop? A: Yes. Your computer can access any wireless network that you are allowed to access through a password you have been provided. You may also add your home printer to your laptop. It comes with many print drivers pre loaded. If you have trouble adding your home printer then you may contact the Help Desk for assistance. Q: What do I do if my laptop doesn t work or is damaged? A: Bring your laptop by the Help Desk as soon as possible. The Help Desk has operational hours during the summer on Monday through Thursday from 9am to 3pm. It s important not to wait before bringing your laptop in because one problem can lead to another if it is not solved right away. If your computer is damaged the Help Desk Technician will try to fix it or send it out for repair. If it needs to be repaired, you will be issued a loaner computer to use until yours is returned, as long as one is available. Q: How do I carry my laptop? A: Always carry your laptop in a case or in a laptop backpack or sleeve. The hinge on your laptop can become damaged if you carry it with the lid open and you risk the chance of falling or tripping with a vulnerable computer. Remember, they wouldn t call it an accident if they knew it was going to happen. Q: May I put games or software? A: Approved games (with age appropriate ratings), software, and/or music that you have legally purchased may be installed on your laptop. However, if anything that you install on the computer causes it to malfunction, the laptop may have to be reformatted. This means all files will be lost. Be careful not to install too many programs or max out your hard drive space. Also, remember that this laptop is ultimately a learning tool. The goal of the OTO program is to have a laptop for you to further your education. If anything you install hinders this, the PBS Tech Department may have to remove the program and prevent you from requesting future installations. 8 to install on the computer is mission appropriate (no explicit songs or offensive pictures). We hope that you will glorify Christ through the use of your computer. Q: Where do I keep my laptop at school? A: At school you will need your laptop in nearly all of your classes. For any classes or times when your laptop is not needed it needs to be locked in your locker. Unattended laptops will be rescued by faculty and brought to the Technology Department. Please take note of the consequences listed on page 2 and 3 of the Laptop Use Agreement. Your computer has your school work and other data on it so it is very valuable. It is important to protect it and keep it safe. Q: Is there anything special I should do with my laptop at home? A: Be sure to plug your laptop in overnight so that you arrive at school with it fully charged. Additionally we recommend that you backup any work you have done over the course of the day that you have not already secured on a flash drive or external storage device. Q: What if I have any questions about the laptop? A: You can stop by the Help Desk during hours of operation OR helpdesk@parkviewbaptist.com from address at any time.
