9 Skagenskunst når det bedst og en dobbelt narhvalstand Vi går mod lysere tider, og det er let at lade sig rive med af sommerstemningen i Laurits Tuxens maleri Sommerdag på Skagen Strand med Figurer fra Det står som indbegrebet af de tre S er sol, sommer og Skagen, og de tre yndige piger i sandet forestiller kunstnerens døtre Yvonne og Nina i selskab med antagelig Krøyer-parrets datter Vibeke. Maleriet har netop været vist på den store udstilling Tuxen farver, friluft og fyrster, først på Skagens Museum og senere Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, hvor det hørte til blandt publikums favoritter og høstede stor ros. I Danmark er Tuxen bedst kendt for sine skildringer af livet på Skagen, men han havde også en eminent evne til at skaffe sig adgang til forskellige kongehuse og blev betragtet som en af tidens førende hofmalere. Han udførte bestillingsopgaver for Dronning Victoria af England, var med til den russiske zar Nikolaj II s kroning i 1894 og malede et stort familieportræt af Christian IX og Dronning Louise omgivet af Europas konger og fyrster. Fra 1901 kom Skagen til at spille en gennemgående rolle i Tuxens motivkreds, og det udbudte værk hører til blandt hans bedste fra perioden (kat.nr. 19). Auktionen byder også på fine værker af Anna og Michael Ancher. Kun få samlerobjekter er omgivet af så stærke myter som narhvalstanden. I middelalderen blev den anset for at være hornet fra fabeldyret enhjørningen, og senere er den blevet tillagt alskens magiske evner. Med sin lange snoede form fandt narhvalstanden i 1600-tallet vej til fyrsternes raritetskabinetter og fascinerer stadig i dag samlere verden over. Normalt er narhvalen kun udstyret med én tand, og det er derfor en kuriositet af dimensioner, som vi præsenterer på denne auktion et narhvalskranium med to imponerende stødtænder på hver 180 cm (vurdering: kr., kat.nr. 211). Blandt auktionens herrearmbåndsure vil to af dem formentlig vække særlig opsigt hos internationale samlere. Det gælder et Rolex Daytona Big Red fra slutningen af 1970 erne og ikke mindst et Vacheron Constantin fra 1940 erne med den såkaldte Triple Calendar. Cartier står som et af auktionens andre hæderkronede brands og er repræsenteret i form af et platinarmbånd med brillantslebne diamanter på i alt ca ct. 10 Art from Skagen at its best and a double narwhal tusk As we head towards brighter times, one could easily be swept away by the summery atmosphere in Laurits Tuxen s painting Summer day on Skagen beach with figures from It is the epitome of the three times S Sun, Summer and Skagen and the three lovely girls in the sand are the artist s daughters Yvonne and Nina with a girl who is thought to be Krøyers daughter, Vibeke. The painting has recently been on display at the major Tuxen exhibition, first at Skagen s Museum and later at Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, where it was one of the visitors favourites and received tremendous praise (cat.no. 19). In Denmark, Tuxen is best known for his portrayals of life in Skagen, but he also possessed an eminent ability to gain access to various royal families, and was regarded as one of the leading court painters of his day. He undertook commissions for Queen Victoria of England, attended the Russian Tsar Nicholas II s coronation in 1894 and painted a large family portrait of Christian IX and Queen Louise, surrounded by the kings and princes from all over Europe. The auction also features exquisite works by Anna and Michael Ancher. Few collectibles are as steeped in myth as the narwhal tusk. In the Middle Ages, it was considered to be the horn of the mythical unicorn, and was later ascribed all manner of magical powers. With its long twisted shape, in the 17th century, the narwhal tusk found its way into the cabinets of curiosities of princes, and it continues to captivate collectors worldwide to this day. The narwhal normally only has one tusk, so it is truly a curiosity of some proportion that we are presenting at this auction a narwhal skull with two impressive tusks, each measuring 180 cm (estimate: DKK 500, ,000, cat.no. 211). Of the men s wristwatches up for auction, two are likely to arouse special attention from international collectors. The timepieces in question are a Rolex Daytona Big Red from the late 1970s and not least a Vacheron Constantin from the 1940s, featuring the Triple Calendar. Cartier is another of the illustrious brands at the auction, and is represented by a platinum bracelet with brilliant-cut diamonds totalling around 7.00 ct. High quality diamonds are also to be found in a pair of earrings, which are guaranteed to be at the top of this year s wish lists (cat.no. 467, 482, 318 and 346). The two Italian panoramas are very close to the landscapes Jørgen Sonne painted in the region around Terracina in 1830ies. He was also commissioned to paint "Shepherds in the Roman Campagna" to the Puggaard family c The Puggaard family consisted at that time of Hans, Bolette and their daughter Marie. The family spent the winter of in Rome. They visited the Danish artists and Sonne soon became a sort of inhouse painter for the family. Among other things, he later painted the family sailing in Esrum Channel and "Krathuset" in Ordrup, the residence of their son Rudolph Puggaard, both paintings are at The Nationalhistoriske Museum at Frederiksborg, as well as a portrait of their grandchild "Signe Puggaard watching the sunset", now at The National Museum in Oslo. Rohde, "En guldaldermaler i Italien", 1977, goes with this lot. The "Shepherd boy" is reproduced on the cover of the book. Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark) owns a smaller version and almost identical painting of "the shepherd boy" bought directly from Constantin Hansen in The shepherd boy is a model for a figure in "The Ceres temple in Paestum" dated 1841 (Emil Hannover no. 226). Thus, there exists several very varied studies by the artist of the characteristic landscape around Frederiksværk, all dated July or August This painting is one of these. "Sommerdag på Skagen Strand med Figurer" is something very special in the oeuvre of Tuxen, as his paintings of this size usually depict magnificent portraits of the royal and princely families of Europe. In this large painting Tuxen's daughters Yvonne and Nina are seen with presumably Krøyer's daughter Vibeke on the beach on a hot summer day. The inspiration from P. S. Krøyer's paintings is evident, since the whole focus of the painting is on light and naturalism. Tuxen was a close friend and fellow student of Krøyer and through this relationship Tuxen, despite his many trips abroad, became aware of the artistic development of the Danish art in the late 1800ies. The motifs changed. Interiors were replaced with exteriors, and on their canvases the artists tried to capture the original form of life between nature and man. Curator at Fuglsang Kunstmuseum Gertrud Oelsner comments on this painting in the above mentioned exhibition catalogue p. 129 (in Danish): "The healing power of the air and the sea is evident and cannot fail to be seen. When Tuxen arrived in Skagen this was largely the topics of his compositions". As in this painting where the three girls are portrayed after their swim in the sea."the sun is high in the sky and bathes the wide beach in a glittering light, where the short shadows of the children indicate, that it is the middle of the day." Around 1900 there was still farmland with farmhouses close to Ancher's house on Markvej, so Anna Ancher should not walk far to find the harvest motifs, that she painted several times, often with three or more field workers on the way to or from the day's deed.
