11 Birte Stokholm og Charlotte Hviid 2 gange 30-års jubilæum Bruun Rasmussen har den glæde at kunne fejre 30-års jubilæer for to af vores højt værdsatte medarbejdere. Det drejer sig om ekspert i ældre malerier, Birte Stokholm, og ekspert i orientalsk kunst og porcelæn, Charlotte Hviid. Derfor inviterer vi kunder, forretningsforbindelser og venner til reception torsdag den 11. september kl i Bredgade 33. Det hele startede i sommeren 1984 med annoncen Kunstfaglig medarbejder søges i dagbladene Politiken og Berlingske Tidende. Blandt ansøgerne var to unge lyshårede piger, der blev budt indenfor i auktionshuset til en uddybende samtale med både min far og undertegnede. Heldigvis blev de begge erklæret egnede af os. Birte er cand.mag. i kunsthistorie og historie fra Københavns Universitet og havde i en årrække været ansat på Det Nationalhistoriske Museum på Frederiksborg Slot. Charlotte læste kunsthistorie, før hun besluttede at uddanne sig til forskningsbibliotekar. Uden nogen form for oplæring her i huset blev Birte fra første dag placeret i forreste række i vurderingsskranken, mens min far havde andre planer med Charlotte, der fik opgaven at registrere auktionshusets også dengang omfangsrige fagbibliotek. En ansættelseskontrakt kunne ikke komme på tale, for som min far bedyrede en aftale er en aftale! Og ønsket om en ergonomisk korrekt kontorstol frem for auktionshusets smukke mahognimøblement medførte heftig debat. Det var også en tid før computerens indtog alt skulle gøres manuelt og al viden tilegnes gennem faglitteraturen. Der var kun et begrænset antal medarbejdere, så selvom man var ansat til én type opgaver, gav man en hånd med, hvor der var brug for det. Birte og Charlotte kom derfor hele auktionshuset rundt og varetog bl.a. også marketing- og pressearbejdet. Som i dag blev de stærke familieværdier holdt i hævd og en konservativ fremtoning foretrukket, hvilket betød, at husets kvindelige medarbejdere ikke måtte bære lange bukser. Efter nogle års ansættelse blev Birte fast tilknyttet maleriafdelingen. Hendes hjerte banker særligt for den danske guldalderkunst, og hun drives af researcharbejdet og historierne bag malerierne. Charlotte blev tilknyttet porcelænsafdelingen, og hendes passion retter sig primært mod dansk 1700-tals porcelæn fra Den Kongelige Porcelainsfabrik og kinesisk kunstindustri, hvoraf sidstnævnte netop nu oplever kronede dage med enormt høje hammerslag. Begge sætter de stor pris på den direkte og personlige kontakt til kunderne, som ofte har kendt dem gennem mange år og udviser stor tillid til deres dømmekraft. Med Birte og Charlottes solide erfaring, engagement og enestående specialviden har de været med til at opbygge vores auktionshus faglighed og troværdighed. Et stort tillykke til dem begge! 13 Auktion 850 starter den 16. september på auktionshusets 66-års fødselsdag. Her vil man blive mødt af en lille rødkindet og velfriseret dreng, der intenst ser ud på beskueren i Christen Købkes portræt fra Drengen er den senere børnebogsforfatter og skolebestyrer for den velansete Krebs Skole i København, Johan Jacob Krohn. De fleste kender ham som forfatter til bogen Peters Jul fra 1866, hvis fine vers for generationer af danske børn har været en uundværlig del af juletraditionerne. Købke står som en af dansk guldalders betydeligste kunstnere, og i nærværende portræt gengiver han sin søster Sophies søn med den særegne intimitet, som han netop er kendt for at mestre i sine portrætter (kat.nr. 16). På Kunstakademiet var Købke elev af C.W. Eckersberg. Det udbudte værk En Ofring til Jupiter vidner om Eckersbergs internationale format og hans stærke inspiration fra den franske maler Jacques-Louis David (Kat.nr. 15). At skildre begivenheder fra danmarkshistorien var en anden af Eckersbergs foretrukne genrer. I værket fra 1831 fortæller han historien om den medfølende Frederik I, der frigiver den svenske rigsforstander Sten Stures enke og sønner fra fængslet i Kalundborg, hvor de var indespærret som følge af Danmarks erobring af Sverige i 1520 (Kat.nr. 17). Den altid populære Paul Fischer er denne gang repræsenteret med ti værker. Et af dem tilhører hans serie af kunstnerportrætter, og her har han skildret kollegaen P.S. Krøyer i færd med at male Badende Drenge. Første gang Krøyers værk blev præsenteret for offentligheden var på Charlottenborg i 1893, og samme år var det med på en kunstudstilling i Budapest, hvor det blev solgt til en ungarsk samler. I 1909 dukkede det op på en udstilling i Venedig, men siden har ingen set det (Kat.nr. 33). Den danske snedker Mathias Ortmanns møbler betragtes som noget af det bedste inden for nordeuropæisk rokoko. I modsætning til tidens andre møbelsnedkere signerede han sine møbler, og på det udbudte kabinetskab af guldstafferet nøddetræ ses resterne af den kobberstukne etiket stadig (Kat.nr. 133). Det parisiske værksted Maison Millet anvendte også signaturer og var i anden halvdel af 1800-tallet specialiseret i at reproducere det foregående århundredes møbler, som det ses med auktionens imponerende bureau plat af rosentræ (Kat. nr. 123). Vi vender næsen mod Sydamerika, når det gælder smykker og ure heriblandt en solitairering med en brillantslebet fancy deep grøn diamant, der blev formgivet af Venezuelas fremmeste juvelér Joyeria La Dama i 1950 erne (Kat.nr. 377). En af urfirmaet Audemars Piguets ambassadører er den colombianske racerkører Juan Pablo Montoya, der også lægger navn til det udbudte Royal Oak Offshore-ur. Det er kun produceret i et begrænset antal på 1000 styk og adskiller sig markant fra andre modeller i serien af ure med henvisning til Formel 1 (Kat.nr. 578). Startskuddet har lydt! 14 Auction No. 850 opens on the 16th of September, the day when the auction house turns 66. Here, you will be greeted by a little boy with red cheeks and clean-cut hair, looking intently out at the beholder in a portrait by Christen Købke from The boy is Johan Jacob Krohn, who later became a much-celebrated children s book author as well as headmaster at the renowned Krebs School in Copenhagen. Most people know him as the author of the book Peters Jul (Peter s Christmas) from 1866, whose beautiful lyrics have been an essential part of Christmas for generations of Danish children. Købke is considered one of the most significant artists from the Golden Age of Danish art and in this painting, he has portrayed the son of his sister, Sophie, with exactly that distinctive intimacy, which he is so well known for mastering in his portraits (Lot No. 16). At the Academy of Arts, Købke was a student of C.W. Eckersberg. The painting up for auction An offering to Jupiter bears witness to Eckersberg s international calibre as well as his great inspiration from the French painter Jacques-Louis David (Lot No. 15). Depicting historic events from Denmark was another of Eckersberg s preferred genres. In a painting from 1831, he tells the story of the compassionate Frederik I, who releases the widow of the Swedish regent Sten Sture and their two sons from prison in Kalundborg, where they had been incarcerated following Denmark s conquest of Sweden in 1520 (Lot No. 17). The ever-popular Paul Fischer is this time represented with ten works of art. One of them belongs to his series of artist portraits, and in this one he has portrayed his colleague P.S. Krøyer in the process of painting Badende Drenge (Boys swimming). Krøyer s painting was presented to the public for the first time at Charlottenborg in 1893, and that same year it was shown at an art exhibition in Budapest, where it was sold to a Hungarian collector. In 1909, it appeared at an exhibition in Venice, but since then no one has seen it (Lot No. 33). Furniture made by the Danish cabinetmaker Mathias Ortmann is considered to be among the finest within North European rococo. Contrary to contemporary cabinetmakers, Ortmann signed his furniture, and on the walnut and gilded cabinet on offer one can still see the remains of his paper label (Lot No. 133). The Parisian workshop Maison Millet also used signatures, and during the second half of the 1800 s they specialised in reproducing furniture from the previous century, such as the impressive bureau plat made out of rosewood (Lot No. 123). We change direction to South America to have a look at jewellery and watches. Up for auction, is a diamond solitaire ring set with a brilliant-cut fancy deep green diamond designed by Venezuela s outstanding jeweller Joyeria La Dama in the 1950 s (Lot No. 377). One of the ambassadors for the watch-making manufacturer Audemars Piguet is the Columbian racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who also lends his name to the Royal Oak Offshore watch on offer. Only 1000 of these watches have ever been made, and it stands out significantly from other models in this series of watches referring to Formula 1 (Lot No. 578). Let the race begin! He made notes whenever he framed one of Petzholdt's paintings. Owned by the estate after the late Collin. Henry Tuxen, who made the list of the paintings by Petzholdt is a descendant of the painter. Petzholdt was the brother of Tuxen's great-grandfather. Tuxen registered the paintings owned by the family, and G. Melinda Young Stuart, co-author on "Danske herregårde og Amerika", 2003, suggests that the location can be identified as "View of the German Hotel and Bath House in Niagara town". That one exhibited in Nygade 7, Copenhagen, "Prospecter af amerikanske Egne og Steder" no. 25, (Views from American vicinities and places). In the first portrait from July 1829, she is wearing a pink dress and pearl jewellery. That one was sold at Bruun Rasmussen auction 716, 2002 no for DKK. Literature: Eckersberg writes among other things about the making of the portrait in his diary in December 1829 (in Danish): "14. Monday. Have been working on the repetition of Miss Schak's portrait, which Marstrand had prepared in advance". "15. Tuesday. Have been working on Miss Schak's portrait - it was the first quite dark day, so it was sometimes difficult to see the work". "18. Friday. Have been working on the portrait and finished it until the last sitting". "23. Wednesday. Had a sitting with Miss Schak and finished the face". (C. W. H. J. Lynge's collection, the estate of Lynge, april 1898 no. 40. Eckersberg writes in his diary the 6th of April 1831 (in Danish): Began to make a sketch for a new painting. On the 16th of April he notices (in Danish): Have finished the sketch depicting Frederik the 3die (sic!) leading Sten Sture's widow and sons out of jail in Kalundborg giving them their freedom. Eckersberg did at least paint two versions of the subject, the present one dated 1831 and another larger slightly different one dated 1833 (sold at Bruun Rasmussen auction 656, 1998 no. 222). The motif was supposed to be a decoration for Christiansborg Castle but was rejected and found instead private collectors. The historical background for this painting is as follows: The Swedish regent Steen Sture died fighting the Danes during the conquest of Sweden by Christian II His widow Christine Gyllenstierne continued fighting and was the head of the armed forces defending Stockholm. After the capitulation of Stockholm, she was imprisoned in Kalundborg. When Christian II was dethroned, his successor Frederik I felt pity for her and released her and the two sons. Eckersberg depicts that scene. It is not an important episode in neither the history of Denmark nor in the King's history, on the other hand it tells us about a more private side of the King. Blache, Julius Exner, P.S. Krøyer and Lauritz Tuxen. The present painting is used for a vignette, that one reproduced p P. S. Krøyer is standing in his studio presumably in his villa Holckenhus, Østerbro, were he lived with his wife Marie in the beginning of the 1890ies. He is wearing his well-known smock with embroidery on the shoulders seen in other paintings and photos of the artist. A large painting "Bathing Boys" is dominating the studio. On the floor and on an easel studies for the painting are seen and in the background Krøyer's bust of "A fisherman from Hornbæk". The painting "Badende Drenge" or bathing boys has an extraordinary history. Dated 1893 and exhibited that year at Charlottenborg. Krøyer was the same year invited by the Hungarian Art Association to exhibit in Hungary. The Hungarian state wanted to buy excellent foreign works of art for the state museums. A Hungarian count and politician Gyula Andrassy ( ) bought the painting. It was last seen at an exhibition in Venice honouring P. S. Krøyer in Since then the painting's whereabouts have been unknown. Oil on canvas. 52 x 62 cm. The first thing that catches the eye in this atmospheric painting from Tuxen's garden at Dagminne, Skagen, is the impressive rosebush in full bloom. The rosebush takes up most of the painting and casts a shadow on Nina and the girls. The painting emanates sun and summer, and one can almost smell the roses. In 1893, Krøyer painted a similar subject in his garden in Skagen, "Roses", with his wife Marie reading in the shadow in the background. Again, focus is on an impressive rosebush in the centre of the painting. Krøyer's painting is today owned by Skagen Museum. Reproduced on the previous page. The Norwegian painter Christian Krohg ( ) was an important figure within the the art of painting, but he did also participate in the social debate with significant opinions. He took an interest in the fate and life of common people. His portraits, his scenes from the social life, the motifs from Skagen and his depictions of life at sea, as in this painting, are part of the Norwegian national treasure. He finished law school, but decided to move to Germany to study in the genre painter Carl Gussow's studio. He met Max Klinger and Georg Brandes and they changed the rather conservative Krohg into a genuine radical person. Meeting impressionism meant that his colours became lighter and brighter. Krohg's breakthrough as a painter can be dated to the summer in Skagen 1879 with the two works "Garnbinderen" (Mending the net) and "Let Bagbord" (Light Aport). What is new and different in these two paintings? The motif has moved into the foreground and the diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines draw the viewer into the painting. The present painting is a good example of this with its light colour scheme and the strong, bearded and broad-shouldered sailor studying his chart, standing in the foreground with the sloping table placed so it disappears diagonally out of the picture.
