1 P a g e 1 Real World Readiness: Holistic and Transformative Co-curricular Learning The Division of Student Affairs is delighted to offer an array of First Year Seminar workshops that support holistic and transformative cocurricular learning in preparation for real world readiness. The purpose of these workshops is to encourage and challenge students to become active participants in the development of skills that are not necessarily taught in the traditional classroom setting. Additionally, the workshops are designed to promote the importance of reflective practice moderated by the core competencies and Habits of Mind. The workshops have been developed to address the five Student Affairs Learning Themes descriptions: 1. Building Future Leaders () - Engage students in co-curricular programs and activities that foster their understanding of the characteristics of a leader, provide opportunities to develop and utilize leadership qualities and to develop a plan to facilitate their own and other students success through career preparation and college and community services. 2. Providing Civic Learning Opportunities (CLO) - Educate the college community to identify and foster individualized civic engagement activities and encourage socially responsible student development through collaborative efforts such as community- based partnerships and volunteerism. Participation in such activities will contribute to students knowledge, skills, understanding of their values and advocacy that make a difference in the lives of both students and the global community. 3. Building Inclusive Communities (IC) - Create a safe environment where all identities are celebrated and have an equal and valued voice; acting with respect between and among all other groups, identities and individual voices. 4. Teaching Behaviors for Personal and Professional Success () - Provide students with activities, both in and outside the classroom that develop, strengthen and assess their confidence in the academic, personal and professional identities. This strong foundation is reinforced through on and off-campus learning opportunities that not only lead to personal and professional fulfillment and goal attainment, but also to socially responsible behaviors and the betterment of the global society. 5. Promoting Healthy Life Choices (HLC) Provide opportunities for students to embed skills that honor the body and cultivate the mind. We will develop an inventory of knowledge and skills that will be defined in collaboration with various Health Science programs and Health/Wellness focused services on campus. The offerings range in pedagogical approaches, duration, settings. To access the full import of these offerings and augment the student s appreciation of learning as an active and reflective process, it is strongly suggested that a follow-up eportfolio reflective exercise is assigned
2 P a g e 2 guided by the following prompt: Consider how the workshop that you experienced today may play a role in your in success. Additionally, the facilitators will incorporate collaborative learning where applicable allowing student to converse and reflect in community. Each workshop has a brief description, the theme which it supports, duration, location preference, and contact person. It should be noted that the listed offerings are intended to peak the student s curiosity to the extent of full engagement participation in current and future co-curricular offerings, services and resources through the Division of Student Affairs. When making your selection(s), please be mindful that there may be limited availability in the number of individual workshops. When applicable, please choose an alternative while encouraging students to visit the various centers that are offering these co-curricular learning opportunities. Please provide one week for the facilitator to adequately prepare to deliver an optimal learning experience.
