Mini Med Schools are public education programs. Typically consisting of a lecture series that meets once a week and provides "mini med students" information on some of the same subjects studied by "real" medical students. Mini-Med School students do not need a science background to attend.
There are more than 70 medical schools, universities, research institutions, and hospitals across the nation and internationally (Ireland, Malta, and Canada) that have a mini med school. Mini Med School Locator from the National Institutes of Health Office of Science Education provides a list of locations
J. John Cohen, M.D., Ph.D is considered the Father of Mini Med School The chancellor of the University of Colorado (CU) was concerned about the relationship between the CU medical school and the surrounding community. The chancellor asked Dr. Cohen to come up with a way to show people what the CU medical school does. With that charge Dr. Cohen created and developed the concept of the mini med school In 1989.

UM Mini Med School is intended to provide the community with information not otherwise readily available in an informal manner. It offers a 6-week course available to the community regarding various topics extracted from actual medical school curriculum. The tuition rate is approximately $75 per person, $50 for seniors (65 and older).
Gerald D. Abrams M.D., the course director of the U-M Mini Med School, explained its rationale: that the Medical School has the responsibility to provide medical and health information to the citizens of Michigan and beyond. This led the launching of the UM Mini Med School in 2001.
For the first year ads were put in the Ann Arbor News and Detroit Free Press. Interest was overwhelming. A database was created and there are now ~700 entries, many of whom are couples. Since then it has not been necessary to advertise as class tends to fill from the mailing list alone.
Six weeks on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes are held in a Medical School building, in facilities used during the day for instruction of the U-M's real medical students. Each session includes a lecture and the opportunity for informal exchange with faculty and classmates.
Variety was the key word for the inaugural session. Each week provided a glimpse into a different topic. Most of the topics were later studied for a full session.

In 2003 the Taubman Health Sciences Library began a collaboration by providing a supplemental list of resources on the topics covered in the course. Each year we now provide such a list and have even had input as to what topic will be covered. The list is presented to the students at the beginning of the course. The list now consists mostly of web resources and print that is available free or at many public libraries. Students are encouraged to come to our library to use our resources or to call or us to get assistance with any of the resources on the list.
