2 P a g e 2 Master of Public Health (MPH) Programme Module Outline Summaries CORE MODULES HH 5101 Statistical Methods in Public Health Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills of biostatistics as a fundamental tool in public health and epidemiology. The module introduces the student to survey methodology with analysis of survey data using computer software. Module topics include: principles of biostatistics, numerical parametric data analysis, numerical non parametric data analysis, categorical data analysis, survival data analysis, vital statistics, statistical applications in research methods, survey data analysis, forecasting techniques for public health management, statistical software applications, and critical appraisal of scientific papers. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination (50% theory and 50% practical). HH 5102 Principles of Epidemiology Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to: describe and apply the basic epidemiologic principles and methods in investigating the distributions and determinants of health and disease; critically review published epidemiologic reports; describe and apply the principles and methods of screening and public health surveillance; and describe and apply the basic epidemiologic principles and methods used in health promotion, protection, and restoration and in disease prevention and control. Module contents include: concepts and applications of epidemiology, measurement of exposure and outcome, epidemiologic study design options, epidemiologic study design issues, conducting epidemiologic studies, analysis and interpretation of epidemiologic studies, causation in epidemiology, epidemiology in public health, and epidemiology in clinical medicine. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination

3 P a g e 3 HH 5103 Behavioural Health Sciences Module Description: The module aims to enable the student to understand and critically explore the multidisciplinary partnerships between public health and the behavioural and social science disciplines including sociology, anthropology and social psychology, with particular focus on social determinants of health, risk factor for diseases, and public health theory and practice. Module topics include: Social and behavioural aspects of public health, Social and behavioural foundations of primary health care, Behavioural risk factors, Social determinants of health, Foundations of behavioural change, Behaviour modification models/theories, Health promotion and health interventions, Psychosocial factors in health and illness, Medical anthropology, Qualitative research methods, and Research methods in social and behavioural sciences. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination (50%) and coursework (50%). HH 5104 Health Services Policy & Management Module Description: The module aims to enable the student to understand and critically explore the process of development and implementation of the public policies concerning medical care and public health including the theoretical approaches to policy making and the factors that influence the structure and function of the health system. The module also aims to enhance the student s management and decision making knowledge and skills relevant to health service organizations with particular focus on leadership, motivation, effective communication, research, economics and financing, planning and evaluation, and management of organizational change and development. Module contents include: managing health service organizations, hospital administration, health services research, evidence based health care, health programme management, public health programme planning and evaluation, managing health systems in developing countries, health economics and financing, fundamentals of budgeting and financial management, public health leadership, and managing non governmental organizations in the health care sector. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination (50%) and coursework (50%).

4 P a g e 4 HH 5105 Environmental and Occupational Health Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to: describe the main etiologic concepts of acquiring diseases in various environmental and occupational settings; investigate risk and causal factors; identify high risk groups; and develop and apply prevention, control, and overall risk management strategies for specific work settings and environmental conditions. Module contents in Environmental Health include: environment and environmental pollution and health effects, food safety, waste and waste disposal, communities and health, epidemiology and research (for both occupational and environmental health). Module contents in Occupational Health include: hazards, risks and risk assessment, toxicology, occupational hygiene including monitoring workplaces, occupational exposure standards and personal protection, occupational medicine, prevention and control of diseases and accidents, and occupational safety and health management. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination (60%) and coursework (40%). HH 5106 Practicum Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with a planned, approved, organized, supervised, and assessed public health practice experience at governmental or nongovernmental organizations or institutions. During the practicum the student applies the knowledge and skills acquired in the MPH programme to real life public health practice settings. The student may undertake the practicum work outside Brunei Darussalam provided adequate onsite facilities and supervision are assured. Module contents include: orientation and preparation, establishing contact, developing a learning plan and a learning agreement, working onsite and reflecting on experiences at work and preparing and presenting the practicum poster. Assessment is through coursework (100%) consists of presentation of practicum experience and continuous assessment by supervisor/s.

5 P a g e 5 HH 5107 Dissertation Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with a planned, approved, supervised, and assessed public health practice opportunity that involves: integration of professional knowledge; designing and application of methods to examine one or more public health problems/issues; application of data/evidence collection, analysis, and interpretation, and professional communication skills; and providing evidence based conclusions and recommendations for policy, planning, practice, and research in the selected area and finally to conduct a full research project which is publishable in a peerreview public health journals. The student may undertake the dissertation work outside Brunei Darussalam provided adequate onsite facilities and supervision are assured. Module contents include: identifying one or more important health problems/issues, designing data/evidence collection approaches, developing a dissertation proposal, obtaining data/evidence, analysing data/evidence, drawing conclusions from analysis findings, making relevant recommendation, writing the dissertation, and orally presenting and defending the dissertation. Assessment is through coursework (100%) consists of written (70%) and oral defence of the dissertation (30%). OPTIONAL MODULES HH 5301 Non communicable Disease Epidemiology & Control Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with epidemiologic and public health knowledge and skills to investigate, prevent, and control non communicable/chronic diseases in different settings. Module contents include: epidemiological methods and risk sciences, clinical epidemiology, burden of diseases, cancer epidemiology and prevention, cardiovascular diseases epidemiology, diabetes, obesity, clinical trials, population science and epidemiology of aging, and genetic epidemiology. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination.

6 P a g e 6 HH 5302 Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Control Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with epidemiologic and public health knowledge and skills to investigate, prevent, and control communicable/infectious diseases in different settings. Module contents include: epidemiologic principles of infectious disease transmission, prevention, and control, epidemiologic studies of infectious diseases, public health surveillance, screening, management of disease outbreaks, emerging and re emerging infectious diseases, vaccines, and epidemiology, prevention, and control of selected major infectious diseases. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination. HH 5303 Public Health Specialties Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to describe and apply core concepts and methods of public health nutrition, health promotion, disaster management, public health legislation, and international health regulations. Module contents include: maternal/child nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, nutrition in emergencies, nutrition programme management, major health behaviour models and theories, health promotion strategies, health promotion programme management, public health legislation, international health regulations, public health impact of disasters, disaster prevention, and disaster management. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination. HH 5304 Community Health & Primary Health Care Module Description: The module aims to provide the student with public health knowledge and skills to be an effective team member in providing primary health care on the basis of social justice, equity, and solidarity in the context of globalization. Module contents include: principles and methods of primary health care, community health assessment, maternal health care, child health care and community paediatrics, school and adolescent health care, family health care, community care of persons with special needs, and elderly care in the community. Assessment is through a 2 hour written examination
