1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Henry County Fair August 14-20, 2015 Hats Off To Henry County Fair Goers Dear 4-H & FFA Livestock Project Members & Parents: There is a great deal of information in reference to livestock projects and exhibiting at the Henry County Junior Fair. Please be sure to read this livestock newsletter as it provides dates for events, deadlines and information to complete project work. We want the best of experiences for our young people in working with their animals, preparing for skillathons and ultimately participating in the livestock shows at the Henry County Fair. The 4-H handbook, available on line and in hard copy, is your written resource for Junior Fair information. If you need further explanation or information please get in touch with me: rohlf.2@osu.edu or ext. 206 The Extension office is the clearing house for the Junior Fair Program. We distribute information to youth, collect entry forms, organize the Junior Fair portion of the fair book and more in partnership with the Agricultural Society/Senior Fair Board. Each Junior Fair Department has an advisor who is responsible for working with the youth throughout the year to provide a well organized program for project members in 4-H, FFA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Farm Bureau Youth. I have enclosed the list of the Junior Fair advisors and board members so that you become familiar with who is your department contact at the fair. 2 Page HENRY COUNTY 4-H & FFA LIVESTOCK PROJECT MEMBER INFORMATION Junior Fair Revisions 2015 Junior Fair Board members spend many hours preparing the Junior Fair program in its entirety. From the specific rules and regulations to the times of shows, awards, classes and order of classes within shows~ these young people are dedicated to organizing a positive experience for members showcasing their project work as part of the Henry County Fair. For the year, the board was challenged to have all revisions completed and approved by the December meeting. This was accomplished and board members want to inform folks that if they have suggestions, ideas, or comments for possible changes in the existing program, they will be determining how best to use this information at the evaluation meeting in August and the September, October and November meetings. They ask that the suggestions be presented in writing prior to these meetings and if an individual wants to speak to the board, they need to contact the President of the board to be placed on the agenda. The following revisions were incorporated in the 4-H handbook under each livestock project heading: MARKET TURKEYS~ Turkeys may not be more than 14 weeks of age. NEW for 2015: Each individual turkey weight-limit is 35 lbs. Birds weighing over this limit are eligible for their letter grade only. MARKET DUCKS~ NEW for 2015: Weight limit of 10 lbs. single duck. MARKET GEESE~ NEW for 2015: Weigh limit of 10 lbs. single goose. GOATS~ There are Meat-Type Breeding classes. Please enter the appropriate age class/es 700-A through 700-H. Be sure to indicate the breed of the goat/s. Ohio Department of Agriculture Livestock Tampering Rules The Ohio Department of Agriculture Livestock Tampering Rules can be found at: (laws and rules) Importing Animals from Another State All animals coming into Ohio from other states have health requirements. For a copy of the Ohio State regulations-health Requirement Governing the Admission of Animals, go to the following website: $$$$PREMIUMS$$$$ All 4-H and FFA project exhibitors may pick-up their project premiums during the fair. Livestock exhibitors can pick-up their premiums the day after their respective livestock show. Premium Pick-Up hours will be posted in the barns and in the Youth Organization Booth Bldg.~ Junior Fair Office. FAIR AUGUST 9-15, 2013 Page 3 Livestock Skillathons Skillathons are designed to assist our members in learning as much as possible about their livestock projects throughout their 4-H or FFA careers. 51% of the member s final grade is determined at completion of skillathons. 49% is on the live showing of the project member s animal during the fair. Each 4-H and FFA member is responsible for reviewing the materials that are included in their age division under each of the species in which they have enrolled. This information can be found at: henry.osu.edu 4-H Youth Development page scroll down to LIVESTOCK click on your species. Genrally the information you will need to know is either in your project book OR the resource handbook for your project. If you do not have the appropriate resource book, please contact Emily Cordes at the OSU Extension Office to order those materials. Prices for the various Resource Handbooks are as follows: *117R Beef Resource Handbook for Market, Breeding and Feeder Calves $14.50 *194R Sheep Resource Handbook for Market and Breeding Projects $22.00 *134R Swine Resource Handbook for Market and Breeding Projects $15.50 *228R Rabbit Resource Handbook $10.25 *127R Dairy Resource Handbook $11.25 *135R Goat Resource Handbook $15.50 The handbooks are very high quality and are designed to last the length of the 4-H ers membership. Members can check-out the skillathon kits for review. In order to provide quality materials and keep the kits functional, there is a $2.00 nonrefundable charge for each kit checked out. Kits may be checked out for 2 days. EXAMPLE~ You reserve the kit for pick-up on Monday; pick it up Monday you return it on Wednesday morning by 9:00am. We ask for the 9:00am return due to others needing the kits for pick-up. Please be sure all labels, posters, and other parts of the kit/s are placed back into the correct envelopes or containers and in the large storage bag or container they came in. The actual Livestock Skillathon Interview day is scheduled for Thursday, July 9th.The times for each specie and member will be developed and sent out in early June. Members are reminded that they are to wear their show attire for the Livestock Skillathons. Livestock Articles for Year Old Livestock Project Members The oldest age division for skillathons must read a livestock article and be prepared to discuss the article with a judge at livestock skillathons. The articles are available online ( or hardcopy at the Extension Office. They are also in the Skillathon kit answer key notebooks. KW YOUR SPECIES RULES & REGULATIONS Please be sure to review the 4-H handbook for rules and regulations pertaining to Henry County Junior Fair. 4 LIVESTOCK ENTRY FORM DEADLINE & EXAMPLE All livestock project members are reminded that their Livestock Entry Form/s are due on or before June 1st. Please follow the instructions of your club advisors in terms of submitting your forms as some of the advisors request that members turn them in at the club level rather than the Extension Office. No forms will be turned away at the Extension Office however. Weigh-in dates for several of the species falls on May 30th you should bring your livestock entry form with you that day. As your animal/s are IDed the identification information will be filled in. You may put any permanent identification (tattoo #, etc.) that is already on your animal on the form if you so desire. Back-up animals are allowed but must be IDed at the appropriate weigh-in/id days. Should you find you need to use a back-up animal/s, you will need to call the Extension Office by August 1st and indicate which animal (with appropriate tag #) you will be exhibiting. ALL entry forms turned in June 1st should indicate the animal you will be exhibiting. All information in terms of DEPARTMENT, CLASS CODE, CLASS NAME can be found in your livestock project section of the 4-H handbook. Below is an example of how to fill out the LIVE- STOCK ENTRY FORM. You can drop showmanship if you decide not to participate, but you cannot add it.

5 Drug Use Notification Forms Members are required by law (Ohio Dept. of Agriculture) to submit Drug Use Notification Forms in order to exhibit at the fair. These forms are required for the following livestock projects: MARKET Steers/Heifers MARKET Hogs MARKET Goats MARKET Sheep MARKET Rabbits OR SINGLE ROASTER MARKET Turkeys MARKET Ducks/Geese LACTATING Dairy Cows LACTATING Dairy Goats DUNForms will be available at the Livestock Skillathon Interviews in July. *Please be sure to read and fill in all of the appropriate information. Any member under the age of 18 must have their parent s signature on the form. *All MARKET animal exhibitors will need to turn in the completed form at the time of weigh-in (with the exception of the market beef exhibitors). Market Beef, Lactating Dairy and Dairy Goat exhibitors will need to turn in their forms at the 8pm Veterinary Inspection at their barn. *All market animals and lactating dairy and dairy goats need to come to the fair DRUG-FREE. If an animal receives any kind of medication after arriving on, the exhibitor MUST fill out and submit a new DUNForm as soon as possible to Laura Rohlf at the Junior Fair office located in the Youth Organization Building. MARKET ANIMAL PRICES The following prices should be used when calculating your market animal value at the end of the project (which should be filled out in your book or insert for Livestock Skillathon Interview Judging). TE: This is not the official market price of your animal/s for the fair sale. BEEF STEERS/HEIFER= $1.50per pound DAIRY BEEF STEERS= $1.42 per pound MARKET LAMBS= $1.35 per pound MARKET GOATS= $1.65 per pound MARKET HOGS= $.78 per pound MARKET RABBITS/ROASTER= $1.20 per pound MARKET TURKEYS= $.45 per pound BROILERS= $.45 per pound MARKET DUCK/GOOSE= $.45 per pound To calculate total market value estimate the FINISHED weight of your project animal and then multiply by the price per pound. 1200lbs. X $1.50=$ Goat & Sheep Project Members A USDA Scrapie tag (OR tattoo) must be present on your project animal/s in order to exhibit at the fair. This is a requirement by law. Please be aware that if the project animal/s do not have this identification, they will not be allowed to be exhibited at the fair. *If your goat or sheep project animal does not have Scrapie ID already applied upon purchase you have 2 choices: 1. Contact the seller and ask that they apply the ID OR 2. You may order the tags by calling: request that a premise identification number and flock ID be assigned to you (even though you may not have a flock). Request the number of tags you need (minimum of 5). If tattooing you still request the premise ID # and flock ID information. If you need assistance with tagging/ tattooing, contact Laura Rohlf at the OSU Extension-Henry County office.

6 Fair Items to Remember We re on the web henry.osu.edu *Livestock Exhibitors are issued a RTH GATE parking pass through the Senior Fair Board Office. This is a one per family parking pass so that exhibitors can have easier access to their livestock. You will need to pickup this parking pass at the Senior Fair Board office in July/August during their office hours. *Individual fair passes for members will be distributed by the organizational advisor of each club or chapter in July. This pass is required of youth 14-over as a means of admission onto during fair. *Stall/pens are assigned by the Junior/Senior Fair Board. The board members work together to place all exhibitors in the amount of space they have available. Having correct space requests and number of entries is essential for all to have a successful layout for these assignments. Exhibitors are permitted to come in on Wednesday (August 12th) to prepare stall/pens for their livestock BUT you are asked not to remove the pen assignment cards. If you need assistance please contact the JFB representative or Senior Fair Board member in your species department. *MARKET animals will be weighed as they are unloaded when they arrive August 13th between 9:00am and 8:00pm for fair. All Beef (Steers & Beef Feeders) animals will be weighed on Monday morning of Fair at 7:00am. *You will need to place tack/supply/feed containers in the appropriate space provided and keep your area clean throughout the fair. Exhibitors are reminded to check their livestock several times per day seeing they have plenty of water and food is essential in carrying out your responsibilities of owning, raising and exhibiting your animal. *Sawdust is provided for under the Rabbit and Poultry pens. HOWEVER, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to clean under the pens regularly. Replacement sawdust will be available throughout the week. *PLEASE KEEP ALL PENS/STALLS CLEAN to cut down on smell and insects. Properly dispose of manure in the designated areas (please do not dump at the edge of the designated areas wheelbarrow in as far as possible). *Before departing from we ask that all livestock project members clean their stalls/pens. Please do not clean pens during the livestock sale. Beef and Dairy Cattle exhibitors are asked to clean out manure/bedding at least 6 inches (at minimum) from the walls before departing from. *Clean Pen Awards will be provided again this year for all species. The awards are sponsored by the HC Junior Fair Board. *The fair veterinarian services will have limited hours during the fair. If you are in need of this service, you must fill out a request form located at the back of the announcer s stand in the livestock show arena. Emergency call to the fair vet and T during the daily barn rounds will be billed to the exhibitor. *Bringing animals in for fair: 1. Market animals (with the exception of Market Steers & Heifers) will be weighed as they are unloaded. Please have your animals unblanketed to allow for an initial assessment of the animal as it crosses the scale. After being weighed, you may place your animal in their assigned stall/pen. PADLOCKS OR ZIP LOCK TIES ON CAGES OR PENS AT THIS TIME! 2. All animals MUST be in their assigned stalls/pen promptly at 8:00pm uncovered. ANIMALS ARE TO BE TIED OUT AT THAT TIME! Exhibitors are to be with their project animal at 8:00pm If the exhibitor is not able to be present due to work or practice or an emergency they are to have an adult representative present who they authorize to sign and speak on their behalf. Exhibitors and their animals will not be tracked down by the Veterinarian, Senior Fair Board Dept. Superintendent or Junior Fair Board representative their animal for this inspection. PLEASE BE PRESENT!!!

7 3. At the time of the IN BARN Vet Inspections, exhibitors will be notified if a project animal/s needs to be removed from exhibition and the reason for the removal. We anticipate everyone will be on top of any health issues of their animal/s prior to coming to fair. You will turn in your DRUG USE TIFICATION FORM at that time if you have a Market Beef or a lactating dairy or dairy goat animal. 4. If any exhibitor s animal is excused for HEALTH CONCERNS and the exhibitor has taken their trailer home or was trailered by someone else, arrangements with the assistance of the Senior Fair Board will be made to help the exhibitor in removing his/her animal. ****The Senior Fair Board Dept. Superintendent will make any/all decisions with regards to animals in violation of rules and regulations of the department or exhibition******* TO AVOID ANY ISSUES OF A NEGATIVE NATURE AT FAIR. 8 LIVESTOCK SALE TES~ *The sale is Thursday, August 20th 9:30am at the Livestock at. If you or someone you know would like to be put on the buyers list, please let Martha Gebers know and she will get a buyer s packet out to them. *It is the member s responsibility to contact potential buyers of their animal. The Livestock Sale Committee does send out an information packet in mid-july to potential buyers who are on the mailing list. A template for a business size card will be available after May 1st on the OSU Extension-Henry County website: henry.osu.edu *The Livestock Sale Committee members expect all exhibitors to take their own animal through the sale ring and to the truck. Only in cases of physical impairment of the exhibitor, the exhibitor needing to leave for college, may another Junior Fair exhibitor take the animal through the sale ring. Please notify Martha Gebers, Laura Rohlf, or the Dept. Advisor of the change in advance. *A fee of $9.00 is charged for market animals sold in the sale to cover livestock sale expenses. Expenses include the cost of mailings, flyers, thank you signs, livestock check-off programs and Grand/Reserve Grand Champion Livestock banners. *It is mandatory for all Junior Fair exhibitors who sell an animal to turn in a thank-you note written to their buyer, placed in an unsealed addressed envelope affixed with a stamp. Thank-you notes must be turned into the OSU Extension-Henry Co. office no later than October 1st. Exhibitor livestock checks are mailed to each member as thank-you notes are received provided the buyer has paid his/her bill. Our goal is to get checks issued within 30 days after the sale, providing the buyers have been paid. No checks are mailed until thank you notes are written and turned in to the Extension Office. Exhibitors may pick up their buyer information at the Youth Organization Booth Bldg. between the hours of 6-7pm the last night of the fair. *EXTRA ANIMALS It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to contact a processor for any CUS- TOM SLAUGHTER/PROCESSING of extra animals or animals going through the sale ring. Extras are considered those market animals exhibited but not selected by the exhibitor to go through the sale ring (REMEMBER. Youth are only allowed to take ONE market animal through the sale ring) Example: Johnny has a Market Steer, Market Turkey, and Broilers. He decides to take his Market Steer through the sale ring on the 20th. The Market Turkey and Broilers must go to market or go custom slaughter. The member still receives the market value from the market buyer. Martha Gebers, Sale Coordinator, asks that you sign-up extra animals by Monday, August 17th 5:00pm on the EXTRA ANIMALS sheet that will be posted on the back of the announcer s stand in the livestock show arena. Include name, address, phone number, tag # of the animal/s and weight. Extra hogs will be loaded out on Wednesday evening so as to avoid confusion on sale day. All other extra animals going to market will be taken on Thursday. Any changes in the Junior Fair Livestock Sale will be communicated in future 4-H Flashes newsletters and/or the Henry County Fair premium tabloid that is published in June.

13 4-H Poultry Project Update. 4-H ers who have enrolled in poultry projects should use the information below as references in completing their poultry projects. While the poultry project record book has been published by OSU Extension Publications, the Poultry Resource Book listed in the Ohio 4-H Family Guide, has not been. The resources will aid project members in learning more about their chosen poultry (Market and Non- Market ducks, geese, turkeys, and chickens (fancy, broilers, pullets and layers). Because the record book is new this year, first year members or members requesting a book this year will receive Poultry Project #150 the front cover provides an area in which you should check which specific poultry project you are taking. If you requested an insert for your poultry project you will receive it as ordered. I apologize for the confusion or frustration this may have caused in filling out enrollment and receiving your project book.
