Show, don t tell: Stories and examples demonstrate your point Develop a theme: Sums up impression you want to make. Write about experiences that develop that theme. Write for your audience Essay must fit interests and requirements of each scholarship organization. Can write one template and tweak it. Word count: Example: 500 words or less--do not go too low , or over 525. Get as close to 500 as you can. Neat and legible: Also follow guidelines for font type/size, margins, one- or two-sided, etc. Proofread: Check spelling/grammar; let others read it; don t trust spell-check! 11

Networking comes in handy! Get more names than needed; then you can choose. 15

Brief informational page Background about yourself (copy of essay works) Information about the scholarship (printouts) Should letter be sent to the college or returned to you? Give references as much time as possible. 16

Scholarship due date: Most due the semester before the one for which they are awarded. Deadlines: References need adequate time Leave time for follow-up to make sure application is completed on time. Two weeks is good buffer zone. 17

References for taking the time to write your reference. Donor for their generosity and support Committee for taking the time to review your application 18

Accessible education is the cornerstone of the Scott Community College mission. A scholarship is more than financial aid - it may determine whether a student can attend college. 19
