1 Ten reasons higher education should begin at Maysville community and technical college 1. Small class sizes You ll get individual attention at MCTC because class sizes are usually smaller than public universities, even in entry-level courses. 2. Teaching is the top priority Our faculty is focused on you and your educational goals. 3. Schedules are flexible In most programs, you can choose day, evening or even online courses for your convenience. 4. Smooth transfer of credits MCTC has agreements with all public Kentucky four-year institutions and many private colleges and universities to ensure seamless credit transfer. 5. MCTC transfer students have high success rates Students who start at a community or technical college perform as well or better than students who start at a four-year university or college. 6. More demand for career-oriented degrees 65% of the top jobs require more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year college degree. MCTC provides the education, training and skills you need to succeed in today s marketplace. 7. Convenient locations The KCTCS statewide system of 16 colleges and 65 campuses has a location within 30 minutes of every Kentucky citizen. 8. Online classes/degrees KCTCS is the largest provider of online education in the state. We currently offer more than 500 online courses. 9. Open access MCTC welcomes everyone with the desire and ability to benefit from college coursework or technical training. 10. Value MCTC tuition and fees are roughly onehalf of those paid at public four-year colleges.
2 At Maysville Community and technical college, applying is simple Application You can apply online at or in person. Testing MCTC requires most incoming freshman to take the COMPASS assessment exam, which is provided by the college at no expense to the student, so it s not necessary to take the ACT. However, your ACT scores are welcome in place of the COMPASS. Orientation and advising MCTC provides orientation for new students. Academic advising is also available before you register for the first time, and throughout your time at the college. To arrange a tour Please call Jennifer Renaker, , Ext , at the Licking Valley Campus, Billie Barbour, , Ext , at the Maysville Campus, or Sam Hughes, , Ext , at the Rowan Campus. 5 Start here, end up anywhere! credits transfer easily to four-year colleges MCTC credits transfer to all Kentucky public universities. You can complete your freshman and sophomore years at MCTC by earning an associate degree. MCTC has special program agreements with the majority of Kentucky colleges and universities. Your MCTC advisor can provide you with the details. Why Transfer? MCTC is a great place to begin your higher education because it provides an affordable, quality education that is close to home. Transfer Checklist Research the program or college you are interested in attending. New University/KCTCS Transfer Scholarship Programs Attend information sessions offered by the college and/or get in touch with their transfer contact, admissions office, or the department to which you are interested in transferring. Note deadlines for applications, scholarships, placement tests, etc. Talk with an advisor. Develop a transfer plan to map how your courses can be used to fulfill the requirements of your intended program. Keep course outlines for all classes you take. Store them in a binder or some other safe place you can access easily. Find out what GPA is required for admission to the institution and/or program and if other requirements exist (e.g., interim transcripts, test scores, volunteer experience, references, interview/portfolio, etc.). Eastern Kentucky university Transfer Students KCTCS students with a minimum of 24 credit hours of course work and a GPA of at least 3.0 at time of transfer are eligible for a scholarship valued at half the in-state undergraduate tuition rate. 6 The road to a degree is paved with financial aid Each year, more than 1,227 students or 75% of the MCTC student body receive some form of financial aid. MCTC students receive about $3 million in financial aid $1.4 million in federal Pell Grants and $1 million in loans. In all, MCTC students received (Fall 2005): Total grants, state and federal: $1,902,648 Federal work-study program: $33,600 Loans: $1,078,605 Scholarships: over $50,000 in various scholarships Most students qualify for some form of financial aid. Financial aid applications are available from your high school guidance counselors, financial aid offices, and on the web at ed.gov. FINANCIAL AID CHECKLIST: 1. Complete federal tax forms as early as possible. You ll need this information to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to make copies! 2. File your FAFSA as soon after January 1st as possible or as early as possible before the semester you want to start. Filing early gets you in line for any free financial aid grants; these are typically awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Your financial information will be forwarded to the schools you list on the FAFSA. If you file a paper FAFSA, make sure it is filled out completely and legibly. 3. Don t limit your options on financial aid. Indicate that you are interested in student loans and work-study options. Also, financial aid awarded by companies and organizations often requires a special application. Contact them to get the form(s) and any other requirements. 4. Keep a copy of every financial aid form you complete. Put it in a file along with your college applications and catalogs. 5. Contact the financial aid office of schools you are considering for any additional financial aid application forms and deadlines. Each school you list on the FAFSA will consider you for financial aid and will notify you of its decision in late spring or early summer. All questions answered at the financial aid office The role of the MCTC Financial Aid Office (FAO) is to provide important information and assistance necessary for you to receive financial assistance while attending our colleges. The FAO personnel are committed to helping you secure the maximum state- and government-assisted funding you are eligible to receive. To find out more information on the federal, state, private and public financial assistance programs that are available visit our website at: If you need additional information that may not be found on this website, contact the Financial Aid Office (FAO) at , Ext for the Rowan Campus, , Ext for the Licking Valley Campus and , Ext for the Maysville Campus.
