2 1.Tutorial objective The purpose of this tutorial is to guide the user through the process of using the Visualization Application suite provided on the NOTIONAL ELECTRIC SHIP DATA index page of the ESRDC web site. There are two ways to use this suite; on the ESRDC web site, and locally on your desk top computer. Current version Notional Ship Data can be downloaded by logging into the ESRDC Library (secure area) and clicking on the VISUALIZATION link within the NOTIONAL ELECTRIC SHIP DATA menu block in the left hand side side bar. If you desire to use these tools locally, your data manipulation goal to strive for is to create a two column, tab separated text file (.txt), containing locations and the values (either heat or power consumption in one operational condition) you wish to visualize. This file can be named whatever you like, but we recommend something like heat_90_shore.txt or power_10_bttl.txt so it will be easy to look at a list of generated files in the future and tell the contents. Tutorials on the use of Microsoft Excel and Open Office's Calc to assist in creating the data file you need abound on the Internet, so if you do not know how to manipulate data using them or your local database, utilize these resources or your in house resources. Please reference your in house database resource personnel for assistance with your particular version of MySQL as well. Creating a database or gaining access permissions to use scripts with an existing database can vary from version to version and network to network so consultation with your in house database administrators can save a great deal of frustration. The online tool The current version of the Notional Ship Data can be accessed by logging into the ESRDC Library (secure area) and clicking on the VISUALIZATION link within the NOTIONAL ELECTRIC SHIP DATA menu block in the left hand side bar (Fig. 1).

3 Figure 1 - ESRDC Notional Electric Ship Visualization site Four manipulation options are provide: 1) view all records; 2) search all records; 3) graphic data visualization; 4) MySQL data download. 2.1.View all records This options allows the user to visualize all available data sorted by compartment, cooling method, equipment name, location, record number or zone. It provides a quick link for the complete database. 2.2.Search all record This option allows the user to perform quick searches over the entire database. Four search types are available: zone, cooling medium, equipment name and location. 2.3.Graphic data visualization Single click on the link Modify Data Subset Online will open the search/sort/modify web page as show in Fig. 2. This link allows the user to search the data base and generate a graphical representation of the position and loads (heat generated or power consumption) of the selected equipment inside the ship. It is also possible to modify the retrieved data.

A new window, with the selected data, will be loaded (Fig. 3) 6) Change the value of the record number 183 to 120; 7) Click on display.

5 Figure 3 - Modify data A graphical representation of the positions and loads searched will be open in the web browser (Fig. 4). Note that the record number 183, which was set to 120 (almost 100 times greater than all other retrieved records), can be seen in read in Fig. 4.

6 Figure 4 - Graphical visualization of the retrieved data 2.4.MySQL data download This link includes the script file that contains all the records and the MySQL script commands to create and populate a table within an existing MySQL database. It also contains a comma separated values list (.csv file) populated with only column headers and the notional data for use within the spreadsheet application of your preference. 3.The offline tool 3.1.Starting the offline application Download and unpack the last version of the application from: FSU Visualization Middleware Download. The present version has been compiled under Windows and Linux operating systems. The following application must be installed before the use of the Visualization application: a) VisIt software ( Used to plot the results; The following application is optional: a) Qt software ( Needed only if the user wants to compile the FSU Visualization Middleware Download application. 3.2.Starting under windows Move to the./vtesrdc folder and double click on ship.exe.

7 3.3.Starting under Linux On the shell command, move to the./vtesrdc folder and run the ship command. 4.Plotting the Notional Thermal data Before plotting the notional thermal data it is necessary to create the.txt data file mentioned in 1.0 and set the Navy geometry standards. Click on Visualization Navy Geometry... The window shown in Fig. 5 will be open. Note that the ship dimensions should correspond to those defined in section 3. Figure 5 - Navy Geometry Standards This standards are not suppose be to changed. Let's keep this window unchanged. Click on ok to close the window. Now it is necessary to load the input file generated by the ESRDC notional thermal data tool. Basically, the input file is a ASCII type file with two columns (Fig. 6). This file can also be created or edited manually. In the latter case, the visualization capability will not be restricted to the data available from the ESRDC notional data. To create the graphical plot it is necessary to generate the *.vtk files, thus go over Visualization Generate. Now it is already possible to plot the equipment locations and the heats distribution inside the ship. Figure 8a shows the plot menu appearance. It is possible to load up to 10 files, therefore in this example only two more files will be loaded. The procedure to load these files is: Visualization Load File... and load./vtesrdc/examples/power.txt; Visualization Load File... and load./vtesrdc/examples/thermal.txt; The plot menu with 3 files loaded is shown in Figure 8b.

9 (a) Figure 8 - Plot options menus (a) one file loaded, (b) three files loaded When Plot Locations is selected, a plot with the location of all loaded files (equipments) will be generated. In this case, the color identify each equipment. A Locations plot is show in Fig. 9. A plot will be generated with the equipment listed in the loaded file. In this case, the second column in the file (Fig. 6) will be used to create a color gradient for the grid elements: the grid element with the lowest value will be blue and the grid element with the highest value will be red. An example of this kind of plot is shown in Fig. 10.
