7 PURPOSE OF EXPERIENTAL MUSIC CURRICULUM Most undergraduate students gain competent explicit knowledge of music terms, theoretical analysis, historical styles, and performance practices. However, they execute the lived reality of the musical tonal and rhythmic events and concepts in a rather superficial or limited way. Some specific faculty concerns about the lack of sufficient musicianship skills have been voiced in the following way: The current curriculum does not allow students to adequately integrate performance, composition, analysis, and ear training within a performance environment. Students do not understand how the concepts of music theory and ear training are realized in a performance setting. The purpose of the Experiential Music Curriculum is to provide an integrative music teaching and learning environment that is necessary and sufficient to facilitate learning of musicianship in undergraduate music students. Experiential Music is a curriculum that reflects an apprenticeship-like model of teaching based on creating integrative music learning settings. Integrative music teaching and learning environment is instruction and critical thinking of music concepts as applied to practice. Students learn by way of lecture, transference of music concepts to their primary music instruments and keyboard in actual time, and, as well, small ensemble experiences facilitating awareness of, identification and defining roles within a music ensemble. Musicianship consists of a well developed receptive capacity for tonal and rhythmic events and expressive capacity for compositional, improvisational and performance expression of musical ideas. Musicianship includes the ability to transcribe and compose music, skills closely associated with knowledge and skill with digital and audio tools. Further, Musicianship includes entrepreneurial skill, business and inventive skills needed to adapt and create music within an applied occupation (i.e., business, engineering, education, therapy and performance). The Experiential Music Curriculum will provide students with an optimal music learning experience. All undergraduate music majors will exercise, develop, and demonstrate music cognition skills that will enable them to learn, perform, and be flexible and adaptive in our consistently changing environment. 1

8 ENTRANCE STANDARDS FOR THE CURRICULUM Music-Theory/Musicianship Students entering the Experiential Musicianship course for the first time should be able to perform the following tasks in the area of music theory and musicianship. Written theory Write a correct major or minor scale (natural, harmonic, or melodic) starting from a given white-key note, using accidentals, in thirty seconds. Name all major and minor key signatures up to five sharps or flats, at a rough rate of any three in twenty seconds. Write all major and minor key signatures, with correct ordering and staff position of accidentals, up to five sharps or flats, at a rough rate of any two in twenty (thirty) seconds. Name all simple intervals written in either treble or bass clef with any possible use of accidentals, at a rough rate of any four in twenty seconds. Write all simple intervals in either treble or bass clef above a given note, involving use of any accidentals, at a rough rate of any four in thirty seconds. Name any of the four triad types in close position, rooted on any note in treble or bass clef and spelled with accidentals, at a rough rate of any four in thirty seconds. Write any of the four triad types in close position and root position in either treble or bass clef, spelled with accidentals, at a rough rate of any four in thirty seconds. Name any triad, written in close position within a key setting in treble or bass clef, using either its Roman-numeral designation or its lead-sheet symbol, in ten seconds. Write any triad in close position, within a key setting in treble or bass clef, given its Roman-numeral designation and lead-sheet symbol, in ten seconds. Aural skills Name the major or any of the three standard forms of minor scale, hearing it played once, ascending or descending, in a middle-register setting on the piano. Name the major second, perfect fifth, and perfect octave, played simultaneously as simple intervals in a middle register of the keyboard. 2

9 Name major and minor triads in root position by quality (voiced either as three-note close-position or four-note block-chord keyboard-style chords). Singing skills Match, in a convenient singing register, a pitch played on the keyboard. Sing, in a convenient register, a major scale in one octave, ascending and descending. Sing, in a convenient register, a root-position major and root-position minor triad from a given root. Keyboard Skills Keyboard Studies I: No previous piano background. Keyboard Studies II: Able to play major scales and arpeggios (quarter note = 100), basic chord progressions, harmonization with I, IV, and V7 chords, dominant seventh chords with inversions, some sight-reading abilities, beginning improvisation. Keyboard Studies III: Able to play minor scales and arpeggios (quarter note = 100), modal scales, five types of seventh chords and inversions, some improvisation, harmonize a given melody with I, V7, vi and ii chords. Keyboard Studies IV: Able to play major and minor scales hands together in parallel motion (quarter note = 88); able to play advanced chord progressions, able to incorporate into harmonization of given melodies secondary dominant chords. 3

10 Students TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CURRICULUM 1. Computer a. Any Laptop (Mac or PC) that meets the following minimum specifications: 2. Software 3. Hardware Digidesign-qualified Windows Vista- (32-bit Business or Ultimate), Windows XP- or Mac OS X 10.5-based computer Minimum 1 GB of RAM (3-4 GB best) Minimum 80 G, 7200 rpm HHD (200+ GB best ) DVD-ROM or equivalent optical drive for software installation Available USB ports for Audio Interface and Midi Controller (USB hubs don t work for audio interfaces. ) a. Sibelius 6 Academic. Required. b. Digidesign Pro Tools 8 LE Academic. Required for second year courses. (See note on Pro Tools Compatible Audio Interface below.) a. A miniature 25-Key midi controller such as the Korg Nano Key. Required. A midi controller is a piano-type keyboard that doesn t produce sound, but rather when connected to a computer is used to enter music notation. (The Korg Nano Key fits in a typical backpack.) b. A 49+-key midi controller or synthesizer. Optional. Recommended for practicing keyboard skills away from the keyboard labs. Also as an alternative controller for computer input. For example M-Audio Oxygen 49 Controller (MSRP $189.95) c. Pro Tolls Compatible Audio Interface. Required for second year courses. M-Box 2 Mini recommended. Pro Tools requires an audio interface, a device usually connected to a USB port that allows for high quality audio recording and playback. The M-Box 2 Mini comes complete, bundled with Pro Tools LE software. 4

11 d. Microphone - Any microphone appropriate for recording student s principal instrument or voice. This purchase should not be made prior to class discussion. 4. Accessories a. Headphones or ear buds. Required. b. Combination Laptop/Keyboard carrying case. Recommended. c. Powered monitors. Recommended. Classrooms Audio System, Video Projector, and Screen. 5

12 SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE CURRICULUM Two different groups of students may need some additional support in relation to the Experiential Music Curriculum: students accepted but not yet embarked on their first year of work and students already in classes at the Frost School. The support systems for these two groups overlap in several ways, but at least one option in the latter system is not available to students not yet arrived on campus. Entering Students Students needing help with written theory prior to their first semester s work For completing the tasks in written theory outlined above, there are two good sources of help, other than private study or summer study at another school. The first possibility is the on-line fundamentals course offered through Connect4Education and taught during the summer by a member of the Frost faculty. The cost of the course includes tuition to the Frost School of Music and a fee to Connect4Education to purchase the CD-ROM that supplies material for the course. The second possibility involves various on-line sites for theory practice, the best of which are perhaps the following: and Students needing help with aural skills prior to their first semester s work For completing the tasks in aural skills outlined in the entrance standards above, there is one very convenient source of help, other than private study or summer study at another school: the trainer facility at This site includes exercises in naming scales, intervals, and close-position chords that are a good fit with the skills we are requiring the students to have when they arrive. The on-line summer course also has some good drills in aural recognition of these elements. Enrolled or Continuing Students Students needing help with written theory during work at the Frost School For help with work in courses in the theory sequence, there are two worthwhile sources of help, in addition to consulting the instructor. The first is the online site mentioned above, which has extensive descriptions and exercises in the topics to be covered in the theory courses. The second is the Academic Resource Center (ARC), where free tutoring, paid for by the University, is available for any undergraduate student. Students needing help with aural skills or singing during their first semester s work. For aural skills of a more advanced kind, the best resource is the Auralia program in the MILL. As with written theory, the ARC will also provide tutoring services if we find appropriate students to work in that role. 6

13 Help With Sibelius for Students and Faculty The notation program Sibelius is an essential component of work in the Experiential Music Curriculum. The Sibelius website has tutorial materials available for practice and skills development. Finally, the first semester of the theory core curriculum will include basic instruction in Sibelius, aimed at enabling students to complete work as needed for that course alone. 7

14 ACADEMIC POLICIES Grading Standards for Experiential Music Curriculum (EMC) Courses Any student failing to achieve the required grade standard for a core-curriculum course in the Experiential Music Curriculum (that is, C (73%) or better for those courses numbered 1xx or 2xx) must take the course again. Since each course is offered only in either the Fall or the Spring semester, a failing grade in a course effectively delays the student s progress toward the degree by one additional year. The table below shows the course names and numbers by department for all courses affected by this policy. 15 Transfer Students 1. Transfer students will take the theory placement exam. a. Students will be placed in the correct level of theory based on the results of the exam. b. Students who place into spring theory classes must wait to take the theory in the spring semester 2. Students with previous piano study will take the Keyboard Studies placement exam.. a. Students will be placed in the correct level of Keyboard Studies based on the results of the placement exam. b. Students who place into spring Keyboard Studies classes must wait to take the Keyboard Studies classes in the spring semester. 3. Skills Ensembles a. All start in MTC 107 regardless of theory level. 4. Music History a. Students with no previous music history must take MCY 140 and 141. b. Students with previous music history credits will be placed in Musicology courses by the Chair of the Department of Musicology 9

16 ASSESSMENT OF THE CURRICULUM Implications of New Curriculum on Student Assessment Student assessment and record keeping will be critical to allow the level of student flexibility being proposed. It is obvious that a web-based interface for students and faculty will be necessary to monitor student progress and attainment of all learning outcomes. To do this, the specific learning outcomes will need to be identified and the metric of how each outcome will be assessed determined. From this, a database can be established and then the web interface can be developed. Quality assessment systems will need to be developed. This will be quite time consuming. I would suggest that a faculty member with assessment expertise be identified as the technical consultant for assessment development. This individual could help faculty in their assessment development, analyze all assessment data, and from these analyses involve appropriate faculty in revising assessments so that they meet the high standards such assessments must attain when deciding students fate. 10
