8 Rensselaer is known for science and technology excellence. Lally school curriculum and research is known worldwide for its excellence in technology-enabled entrepreneurship and innovation. Rensselaer has low walls among its five schools The stage between a technology prototype and robust new product/process or successful new business is often described as a chasm. Practitioners, policy-makers and scholars point to the importance of addressing this roadblock. Few if any schools worldwide are addressing the special skill sets required to ensure that advanced and emerging technologies will reach their potential in terms of providing value to society ( e.g. bridging the chasm)

Scientists and engineers are often frustrated because they don t see their efforts come to fruition through creating societal benefits both economic and otherwise this problem is global and not just

9 Scientists and engineers are often frustrated because they don t see their efforts come to fruition through creating societal benefits both economic and otherwise this problem is global and not just unique to RPI S&E. There are a good number of students who are enamored by science and technology and have a good grasp of it but would rather not engage in developing it. They are frustrated because they can t see a path to leveraging their abilities in ways that are satisfying beyond discovery and invention. Technology commercialization demands both the technical understanding and the management know-how. There are an inadequate number of individuals trained to be experts in this domain. Those with a managerial focus and knowledge of science and engineering practice and Those with a science and engineering focus and knowledge of management practice are needed

10 Scientists and engineers who envision themselves running an R&D laboratory Scientists and engineers who are inventors or owners of intellectual property that want to see their discoveries converted to products, processes, services or new businesses Those who have studied science and engineering who have decided that they do not wish to continue in scientific discovery or developing technology but wish to leverage their capabilities in science and engineering Those who have studied management and wish to work in technologically intensive environments or science based industries

11 Traditionally individuals have thought about TC&E as in terms of new product development or new firm formation or even the marketing of high tech products. A broader view is that TC&E also encompasses solving big societal issues such as climate change, clean air, water scarcity, environmental degradation, energy independence, health care issues etc. TC&E is not only about invention or creative technology enabled business ideas it is about deploying science and technology in ways that create social value or solve problems. As such it involves public policy, technology development, venture creation and technology transfer.

To prepare a new breed of managers who have: 1. advanced understanding of technology, 2. fundamental understanding of commercial functions and analytics 3.

15 TCE trains students to be experts in technology commercialization TCE sensitizes students to the need for and challenges of social responsibility when dealing with the technical, market, organizational and resource uncertainties of creating value based on emerging technology TCE educates students about the interconnection between national innovation systems, government initiatives ( regulatory and otherwise) and business strategy for start-up, growth and renewal depending on advanced and new technologies. Learn project management suitable to different aspects of technological entrepreneurship and innovation Students learn basics about patent law, intellectual property, licensing, contracts, business incorporation, and legal issues relevant to entrepreneurship and innovation ( e.g. liability and regulatory issues)
