1 The University of Jordan Faculty of Nursing Doctor of philosophy in Nursing Course Syllabus 1 st Semester 2013/2014 Course Title: Public Health Nursing Course Number: Credit Hours: 3 Hours Instructor: Prof. Wasileh Petro petron@ju.edu.jo Office Phone : Ext Course description This course prepares students to focus on populations, individuals, groups and families and their indoor, workplace, and out door environment to improve the overall health of communities. Students are prepared in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Community health principles form the basis for instructing individual, families and other groups regarding disease prevention, and health promotion. This course is a survey of major topic areas of environmental health, concerns including pollution of air, water, food and radiation; pesticides. The course will cover interpretation and evaluation of risk assessments in environmental health, occupational health; disaster; adolescents and school health. It will examine sources, routes, media, and health outcomes associated with biological, chemical and physical agents in the environment. It will also cover how the agents affect disease, water quality, air quality, and food safety in community and occupational settings. Learning Outcomes:- Upon completion of this course, should lead to the following learning outcomes: A. Knowledge and Understanding (student should) 1) Understand the history and evolution of public health nursing. 2) Define public health nursing. 3) Identify the different public health roles. 1
2 4) Identify the different areas and foci of environmental health 5) Identify various sources and types of contaminants and in which ways these affect human health 6) Define the major sources of biological, chemical and physical agents found in water, air, soil, and food. 6) Understand environmental and health effects of Pesticides 7) Understand issues, needs, and communication with adolescents 8) Understand sources, effects, and ways of prevention and protection of radiation. 9) Identify occupational diseases, and ways to prevent hazards in the work place. B. Cognitive and Intellectual Skills. 1) Discuss some topics related to public health. 2) Develop critical skills and knowledge in environmental health to be able to function as part of an environmental health team. 3) Communicate clearly an understanding of environmental health problems based on scientific principles. 4) Discuss the spectrum of disaster, adolescents, and school health problems. 5) Discuss importance of environmental health in maintaining a healthy community. 6) Discuss legislations related to public health. C. Subject specific skills 1) Develop competency in analyzing causes of environmental and occupational health issues. 2) Characterize target populations exposed to hazardous agents 3) Describe methods used to detect, manage, control, or remove health hazards. 4) Relate concepts of global community to public health settings. D. Transferable skills. 1) Apply principles of preventing communicable & non communicable diseases. 2) Relate public health concepts at different public health settings to introduce change. 3) Apply principles of quality at public care settings. Learning & Teaching Strategies:- - Group Discussion - Selected self readings - Written assignments - Student's Presentation - Interactive lectures. - Use of electronic resources (internet & data bases). - Case Studies. 2
3 Tests & Evaluation:- 1. Presentations & open discussion :( 30 points) Students are expected to do the required readings each week. Each student will select one topic and will act as a co-leader when that topic is discussed. The planning for the discussion will be done in advance with the instructor. 2. Mid-term Assignment (Application of the Integrative Model for community health promotion): (30 points) Choose a public/community problem and use an integrative model for community health promotion to guide your nursing intervention. e.g. Tobacco use in population or group 3. Term Paper (A Strategy for creating a healthy community): (40 points) To achieve the goal of improving health, a community must develop a strategy supported by many individuals who are working together. The MAP- IT technique helps you to map out the path toward the change you want to see in your community. The MAP-IT technique includes: Mobilize individuals and organizations that care about the health of your community Asses the areas of greatest need in your community as well as the resources and other strengths Plan your approach :start with a vision of where you want to be as a community; then add strategies and action steps to help you achieve that vision Implement your plan using concrete action steps that can be monitored and will make a difference Track your progress over time. e.g. School health, Occupational health, Health care system 3
