1 CE655: Practicum in CE syllabus 1 COUN 655: Practicum in Counselor Education - Fall 2014 Meeting time and place: Mondays 1:25 3:20, in Bailey 424 Instructor: Jeff L. Cochran, Ph.D. - Office hours: Thurs 11 12:30, 2:05 3:30 & by apt. Course Descriptions From UT Course Catalog: Supervised practice and application of counseling skills with clients. From the Ph.D. Counselor Education Program Handbook: All students are required to complete at least one semester (3 credit hours) doctoral level practicum in counseling. Practica are specifically focused on building and refining individual and group counseling skills. Combined practica experiences total at least 100 clock hours. Forty hours must be direct counseling with clients usually 30 hours of individual and 10 hours of group counseling. The remaining 60 hours are indirect yet client related hours including preparation, supervision, etc. Students will develop an expertise in counseling. From CACREP Doctoral Standards, Counselor Education and Supervision, Section III Professional Practice, Clinical Experience, A: Doctoral students are required to participate in a supervised doctoral-level practicum of a minimum of 100 hours in counseling, of which 40 hours must be in direct service with clients. The nature of the doctoral-level practicum experience is to be determined in consultation with program faculty and/or a doctoral committee. During the doctoral student s practicum, supervision will occur as outlined in entry-level standards III.A & IIIC-E (describes supervision qualification, orientation, and time frame: individual or triadic supervision by faculty member or site-supervisor, 1.5+ hours weekly of group supervision). Dual Foci Clinical development, extension of experience, & demonstration of competence Preparation to teach, supervise and guide clinical development Text Cochran, J.L. & Cochran, N.H. (2006). The heart of counseling: A guide to developing therapeutic relationships. Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole. NOTE: Purchase of text is not required. Access to the chapters of the 1 st edition of this text will be provided to students, while the 2 nd edition is in production. Assignments/Requirements 1. Clinical service: As noted above, you will devote at least 100 hours to your practicum experience, with at least 40 hours being direct service to clients, including at least some group work. You will log your time on the form provided in order to document clinical service. Contract draft is due by Sept 4 th, following review by you and your site-supervisor. Verification of liability insurance is due by August 30 th or before direct work with clients. There are 20 points possible in this assignment area. However, adequate clinical skills and professionalism amount to a special must pass assignment area. Should you be struggling significantly in clinical skills or professionalism, against all expectations, this would be clarified through feedback in site-supervisor mid-term evaluation and instructor prompts in supervision or additional meetings.
2 CE655: Practicum in CE syllabus 2 2. Wrap-Around to Clinical Services Support Participation Supervision: You should have one hour of site supervision most weeks. Site supervision usually focuses on coordinating your tasks with the needs of the agency/school and in keeping your sitesupervisor informed of potentially important client issues, such that she can have adequate oversight of the clients you serve within her agency. Your site-supervisor s evaluation will reference the quality of your clinical service as well as your professionalism and is weighted heavily within this assignment/requirement area. You will also have at least an hour of small group clinical supervision from your instructor about every-other-week. These meetings will include viewing or listening to recent segment of your work that you select for supervision, as well as discussions of your development and your reactions to client and workplace issues. Small group supervision from your instructor will begin the week of Sept 8 th. Our course meeting times will be large group supervision meetings featuring presentations of recorded segments of your work for group input and discussion, discussions of service possibilities that you see and are researching for the populations that you are serving, discussions of the values that you bring to your clinical work and hope to foster as an educator and supervisor working toward new counselor skill development. Before each meeting, you should put thought into what you would like to discuss of your site for your benefit or for sharing understandings with peers. For each opportunity that you have to play a recorded segment of your work (scheduled dates in group supervision, each meeting of triadic faculty clinical supervision), you should be ready to play the segment you have selected, be ready to orient instructor and peers to the segment, including why you selected it and what feedback you are hoping for. Attendance, participation, and tape review: Attendance will be quite important as our course meetings will be group supervision and will include your sharing and developing ideas with peers and instructor. Each of you will have a date to present tape recorded segments of your work, usually about 10 minutes each. You will benefit from openness in giving and receiving feedback from peers. Missing more than one meeting will result in a one letter grade deduction per meeting. Additionally, it seems reasonable to miss 1 small group supervision meeting, if needed. Missing more than one small group supervision meeting will result in letter grade deduction per meeting. 3. How I Would Serve Proposal: Propose how you think you can best help the persons you are/will be serving with what types of counseling interaction, with what areas of counseling skills, and from which counseling theory backgrounds. Discern population descriptors that seem to fit key groups of persons that you are serving in your practicum. Briefly review/sample the literature in order to develop and convey an understanding of these populations and the needs of the persons in this population. Sample the literature of counseling skills, approaches, modalities and theories to discern which may meet the needs of your populations, why and how so. Identify a population descriptor that (a) will be relevant to your practicum work and (b) you feel inspirited to deeply consider services for and perhaps even discover an innovatively effective approach for. Provide literature based indications of need and key understandings, proceed to propose how you would help. Propose a set of counseling interventions for the population. What would you do for whom, how so? Relate the aspects of your proposal to wellknown counseling theories and/or elements of therapeutic relationship/counseling skills. Begin
3 CE655: Practicum in CE syllabus 3 with an ideal, best case scenario proposal, then project the practical limitations that you expect to encounter. Initial proposals will be presented on Sept 8 th or 15 th. How I Would Help Proposals should be about eight pages in the body of the paper (double space, normal font and margins), including descriptive subject headings. Proposal should follow all applicable aspects of APA style, including a descriptive title and abstract, citations and references. Presentation will be rated and graded for: overall clarity, coherence and understandability; adequacy of preliminary understanding of population(s); understanding of advocated counseling skills, approaches, modalities and/or theories advocated; logical connection of the advocated counseling skills, approaches, modalities and theories to the needs of the population. Each of you will have 10 minutes to present and 10 minutes for follow-up questions and discussions. Initial written proposals will be graded for: overall clarity, coherence and understandability; adequacy of preliminary understanding of population(s); adequate understanding of the counseling skills, approaches, modalities and theories advocated; logical connection of the advocated counseling skills, approaches, modalities and theories to the needs of the population; fit with assignment parameters; appropriate use of citations and references; writing quality and APA style. Proposals are due on presentation date. You will revise your proposal as you gain experience with the population(s) you are serving. Revised proposals will be graded with the same criteria of the proposal, with an additional rating for: having adequately addressed any editorial comments of original proposal. Revision will be due Dec 4 th. 4. Skills text reading reactions: At four dates during the semester you are to hand in a written reading reaction to skills text, The Heart of Counseling. The dates are Sept 22, Oct 6, Oct 20 and Oct 27, at 10:00AM each date. On those dates, be prepared for discussion. In each written reaction address: How the assigned chapters of The Heart of Counseling are relevant to your work in practicum this semester How the content of the assigned chapters have been relevant in your counseling experience up to practicum Other personal reactions, such as parts of the text that resonate with you in some way (explain) or that you particularly like. Each reading reaction should be no longer than five pages (double spaced with normal APA margins and font). Reading reactions are graded for: completeness, depth of thought, specificity in connection to experiences, and clarity and quality of writing. 5. Your Personal Guide for Beginning Counselors Clinical Development: Throughout your experience, contemplations, and assignments of the semester, develop your personal guide for beginning counselors clinical development. Discern what you value most at this time in core clinical skills and why. Recall how your values regarding clinical skills have changed and which have remained consistent through your development (e.g., from before graduate study, through graduate study, through clinical experiences, through this semester). Consider how you may foster beginning counselors skill development in accordance with your values.
4 CE655: Practicum in CE syllabus 4 The written document of this assignment will be an essay of about 12 pages in the body of the work. The major sections of this paper are: I. What you value in core clinical skills: The most important 3-4 values you hold, with each well explained II. How you may foster counselor skill development in accordance with your values: Explain two actions or ways of being that you may employ to facilitate counselor skill development per value The first draft is due to me for feedback on Nov 3 rd. Approximate length should be 12 pages (normal APA font and margins, double spaced). Your final draft is due with your presentation on Nov 10, Nov 17 or Dec 1. Presentation grades are earned through: overall clarity, well-thought out and clearly articulated values, clarity of explanations of actions/ways of being that give life to your values (including fit of actions/ways of being to values), overall professional quality of presentation. Each student will have 20 minutes to present and five minutes for follow-up questions and discussion. First draft grades will be earned through: well-thought out and clearly articulated values, clarity of explanations of actions or ways of being that give life to your values (including fit of actions/ways of being to values), completeness of the paper in addressing the topic as assigned, and overall writing quality and APA style. This essay should use content specific section headings, title, and abstract. Citations and references may be used, but are not necessarily needed for this introspective assignment. Final paper grades will be earned through the same criteria as the first draft, with the additional criteria of having adequately addressed all editorial comments of original proposal. Grading and Evaluation Your work in assignment areas generates points: A = 90+, B+ = 87+, B = 80+, C+ = 77+, C = 70+. Clinical service is a must pass requirement (VG or S in instructor s final evaluation). Timeliness Modeling after professional behavior norms of most work places, late work should be very rare, if occurring at all. If unusual and unforeseeable circumstances do result in late work, the late work can be acceptable following communication with your instructor. If your instructor judges your late work to be excessive or resulting from avoidable circumstances, a grade reduction will occur. Personal Dispositions The counseling program has adopted a set of personal dispositions to be demonstrated by all students (CORIS). The dispositions include: Commitment, including counseling identity, investment, advocacy, collaboration, and interpersonal competence Openness to idea, learning, change, giving and receiving feedback, others, and selfdevelopment Respect to self and others, including honoring diversity, self-care, and wellness Integrity, including personal responsibility, maturity, honesty, courage, and congruence Self-awareness, including humility, self-reflection, and understanding of place in history
