4 Empower Magnet High Schools Program Criteria What criteria is evaluated for magnet high school program selection? What are the criteria when applying for magnet high school programs? Applications for all magnet high school programs are evaluated on a competitive basis. The criteria include grades from 7th grade, grades from the first quarter of 8th grade, a writing sample, high school courses taken in middle schools, and 6th and 7th grade standardized test scores (better of the two) for reading and math. What do I need to know about the writing sample? Students currently enrolled in a Hillsborough County public school take the Mid-Year Writing Assessment administered in eighth grade language arts class in November and this counts as the official writing sample for the magnet high school application. Students enrolled in a charter school, private school, home school or who are not enrolled in a Hillsborough County public school must attend a writing session. For writing session dates, visit or call the Choice Information Line at (813) Students must pre-register for the writing sample. Those who do not pre-register will only be able to write if space is available. Students must be in line prior to start time. Parents will have the opportunity to attend a Q & A session while students are writing. The session will last approximately one hour. When do my transcripts need to arrive? Transcripts must be turned in with the application for students not enrolled in a Hillsborough County public school. Students who are enrolled in the 8th grade, but did not attend Hillsborough County Public Schools for any part of 6th or 7th grade are also responsible for submitting their transcripts when they apply. Incomplete applications will not be processed. 5 Empower Magnet High Schools Steps To Apply Welcome to Hillsborough County Public Schools magnet programs for high school students. As the eighth largest district in the nation, we offer an array of programs to meet every child s interests. This guide will provide you with a comprehensive overview of magnet programs, the application process and frequently asked questions, The chart below will provide you with details on how to apply for a magnet high school program. Students currently enrolled in Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) are encouraged to apply directly online. Students not currently enrolled in Hillsborough County Public Schools must submit a paper application and their transcript(s). The paper application and Transcript Request Form can be found online and downloaded. Students currently enrolled in Hillsborough County Public Schools Students enrolled in a charter school, home school, private school or Non-HCPS STEP 1 Apply Pre-register for a Writing Session HCPS students who have been continuously enrolled* in grades 6th-8th should apply online beginning November 12, 2013 Attend Information Meetings and school specific Information Sessions Visit for event dates or call the Choice Information Line at (813) One of the eligibiligy criteria is a writing sample. 6 Academy of Architecture & Environmental Design Tampa Bay Technical High School 6410 Orient Road Tampa, FL The Academy of Architecture and Environmental Design is a comprehensive and leading architectural magnet program. This program facilitates the acquisition of architectural and design concepts. It orientates students to both manual drafting and computer drafting skills. Students will use architectural tools and instruments as well as industry approved software. Students in the Academy of Architecture learn all aspects of the architecture and drafting industry. Coursework includes Computer Assisted Drafting, Architecture, Mechanical Drafting, Electrical and Mechanical Applications and Design, Landscape Design, and Architecture History. Instruction is facilitated in architecture classrooms furnished with AutoCAD computer software. The Academy of Architecture and Environmental Design facilitates the development of marketable skills to prepare graduates for postsecondary education. Learning is largely hands on and project based and prepares students to enter institutions of higher learning. Graduates have earned millions of dollars in scholarships to further their studies. 2

Students interested in the fields of Cardiology, Dental Sciences, Medical Laboratory, Ophthalmology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy, Radiology, Veterinary Science, and Alternative Medicine will benefit from specific coursework and laboratory experiences. Students participate in site-based clinical rotations specific to their field of study, such as Florida Hospital Tampa, St. Joseph s Hospital, eye clinics, and animal hospitals. The site-based clinical rotation is designed to provide the student with a firsthand look at the profession and prepare the student to make educated college and career choices. This Academy facilitates the development of marketable skills to prepare graduates to enter the medical career job market in addition to preparing students for postsecondary education. This arts program offers students a unique opportunity for in-depth study in the field. The magnet program faculty is drawn from artistic and educational partnerships including professional artists, technicians, and outstanding educators. Blake High School is also home to a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of this extensive arts program with unique features such as four large art studios, multiform theatre, 600-seat proscenium theatre, experimental theatre space, dance studios, computer labs, music rehearsal halls, practice rooms, creative writing labs, journalism lab, and a television studio. Students can meet professional artists and engage in art experiences through partnerships with museums and galleries. Students are encouraged to matriculate to Advanced Placement Art History and Advanced Placement Studio Art courses. Students become involved in the exhibition process utilizing Blake s professional art gallery, Gallery 501. The program encompasses art history, current trends, critical thinking and studio experience with specialized equipment within the program curriculum. T he Communication Arts program encourages and develops the unique voice and talent of the student interested in Creative Writing, Print, Broadcast Journalism, and Digital Media production. Students explore opportunities and careers in the areas of screenplay writing, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, public speaking, media production and radio broadcasting. A specialized facility is equipped with digital video cameras and TV cameras, recording studio, green room, TV Film studio, and editing room. The program incorporates specialized software for editing films. Creative writing students publish their work in Synapse magazine; journalism students create print and on-line newspapers. 7

The Performing Arts program is comprised of a music, dance and theatre program. The Music curriculum includes programs in Chorus, Guitar, Harp, Band, Orchestra and Piano. The facility offers large ensemble halls, private practice rooms and a piano lab. Through a variety of means, students gain knowledge of music through theory, history, styles, and applied techniques. The curriculum allows training for pursuit of a professional career in music. The Dance program encourages the creative use and development of dance as a medium of expression. The program brings forth the vital aspects of the dancer including creator, writer, interpreter, and arts advocate. Students receive the tools to obtain scholarships to prestigious dance companies, institutions and colleges. The Theater program provides a crossroad of creativity, productivity, and technical ingenuity through the study of acting styles, script interpretation, theater history and criticism, technical design, costuming, play writing, stage make-up, and theatrical management. Students are privileged to perform in the school s professional proscenium and multiform theatres, which house specialized sound and lighting equipment. An Audition is part of the application process for the Arts magnet program. Students who meet the academic criteria will be notified of their audition date and time. 14 Collegiate Academy Armwood e Lennard e Leto The Collegiate Academy, located at Lennard, Leto and Armwood high schools, provides students with the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) through Hillsborough Community College in addition to their high school diploma. Students will take college courses, free of cost (including textbooks), during the school day. Students attending Armwood and Leto take classes on the high school campus. Students attending Lennard will have access to attend classes at the SouthShore campus of Hillsborough Community College conveniently located across the street from the Lennard campus. The Collegiate Academy will provide college academic preparation such as selfmanagement of study routines and preparation for assessments; handling the pace and expectations of college courses, and strategic use of resources such as college advisors and ambassadors from local college campuses. Students who complete the entire Collegiate Academy program will have: earned 60 college credits (at no cost while enrolled in The Collegiate Academy), earned an Associate of Arts degree from Hillsborough Community College, and the potential to transfer to select Florida colleges and/or universities as a junior. 15 International Baccalaureate Program (IB) Hillsborough e King e Robinson e Strawberry Crest The International Baccalaureate program is a rigorous pre-university course of study that meets the needs of the highly motivated and academically talented 9-12 grade student. The program provides students with the intellectual, social, and critical perspective necessary for the competitive adult world. The IB Program takes on a special significance today when knowledge continues to expand dramatically and existence in a world community requires appreciation and understanding of cultural diversity. It is essential, therefore, that academic training provides students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to succeed. All students are required to engage in the study of languages, science, mathematics, arts, and humanities in the final two years of high school. The pre-diploma Program offered in grades nine and ten also includes an emphasis upon the development of study, organizational, and research skills. These four years constitute a blend between the preference for specialization in some countries and the emphasis on breadth preferred in other countries. Term Definition IB Vocabulary Terms Pre-diploma Grades 9 and 10 are referred to as the pre-diploma years. Studies in Language and Literature The student s native language is referred to as Language A. All references to Language A here mean English. Language Acquisition Higher Level & Standard Level JA All students must take four years of a foreign language, either French or Spanish. In the IB curriculum, the foreign language is referred to as Language B. During the junior and senior years, students take six courses, three at the higher level and three at a standard level. Students receive honors points, equivalent to AP, added to their GPAs for both standard and higher level courses. The journée académique (JA) is a specific class assignment. During JA, students may visit teachers for extra help, use the media center for research, work with other students, or complete their assignments. Day 1/ Day 2 IB classes are taught on a two-day rotation cycle. Students attend four 90-minute periods each day. They do not attend each class everyday. AP Advanced Placement (AP) courses culminate in an AP exam and may earn the student college credit. During 12th grade, most courses culminate in both an AP and IB exam, but students also take other AP courses during grades IB Elective All students complete four years of Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. In addition, juniors and seniors must take a sixth subject known as their IB elective. Course offerings vary but usually include the choice of one of the following: Art, Information Technology in a Global Society, Psychology, or a second Science. 12

The student must complete a minimum of 24 credits in his/her individual IB coursework (with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0); perform 200 hours of creative, action, and service activities (CAS); complete all internal/external assessments; sit for all IB exit exams; and write an extended essay. Students who leave the IB Program and do not complete the IB requirements must meet traditional state of Florida graduation requirements. Cypress Street Tampa, FL The International Honors Academies at Jefferson High School are designed to provide foundations towards successful careers for students in the 21st century global society and economy. All magnet students participate in a rigorous core academic curriculum that includes competitive college level classes such as Dual Enrollment (DE), Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors (H) courses including honors world language courses to prepare them for admission to the nation s top colleges and universities. Internationally themed major courses of study are organized into four key areas: International Business Finance Honors Law & Criminal Justice Honors Culinary Arts Honors Maritime and Marine Environmental Science Honors These major courses of study are paired with college-going academic classes. All classes in the program are aligned with an international theme. Students of the Center for International Studies apply the skills acquired through hands-on experiences making graduates competitive in the global marketplace. 14

Cypress Street Tampa, FL T he International Finance Honors Academy incorporates virtual programs such as Knowledge Matters: Virtual Business Management and Personal Finance that gives students a chance to compete nationally with their peers for additional experiences and scholarship opportunities. Advisors play a major role in the Academy of Finance Advisory Committee which includes partnerships with the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, the University of South Florida s College of Business - Department of Finance, and the National Academy Foundation headquartered in New York. Student coursework includes management, accounting, international business systems, international finance and law, international markets, banking investments, financial planning, marketing applications and e-commerce. Students prepare for certifications in the Microsoft Office Specialist Bundle and Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash Certification. Upper level finance students maintain a branch of the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union on campus. Students compete for a paid 6-week summer internship in many local financial institutions such as Citigroup, GTE Federal Credit Union, Suncoast School Federal Credit Union, among others. Students have the opportunity to compete for Tampa s highly coveted William A. Gregory Scholarship worth more than $20,000 as well as other scholarships. 15
20 Center For International Studies Jefferson High School 4401 W. Cypress Street Tampa, FL The International Law and Criminal Justice Honors Academy is unique, and incorporates exposure to a variety of legal professions. Students study constitutional law, court procedures, crime scene investigation, and forensic science. They receive hands-on instruction related to techniques involved in fingerprinting and photographing for evidence collection and international legal systems. Students are also exposed to a wide variety of legal expertise through guest speakers such as local, state, and federal judges; DEA agents; law enforcement personnel; and attorneys. They also participate in various curriculum-oriented field trips. To culminate the program, students in their senior year participate in a weekly externship under the direction of a judge at one of several local courthouses. This externship brings together all aspects of the law and criminal justice experience together offering students a first-hand view of the legal system. Students have the opportunity to earn industry certification in one of the nine areas of interest. Cypress Street Tampa, FL Below is the course sequence for the magnet programs at the Jefferson High School Center for International Studies, including core academic classes as well as the required magnet academy classes. Additional electives are chosen to meet the needs of individual students in satisfying the requirements of their selected course of study. Since foreign language course completion is mandatory for entrance to colleges and universities, students enrolled in the Jefferson High School Center for International Studies Program should enroll in three credits of foreign language including Advanced Placement foreign language.
