1 Faculty of Information Technology: Undergraduate Degrees Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 1 March 2012 Part I General 1. Degrees A degree listed in Schedule 1 may be undertaken as a pass degree; and Schedule 2 may be undertaken as an honours degree Schedule 4 may be undertaken as a degree with honours. 2. Interpretations In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears 'candidate' means a candidate for a degree; 'course of study' means the course of study for a degree as determined by the faculty board under these regulations; 'dean' means the dean of the faculty or the dean s nominee; 'degree' means a pass degree listed in Schedule 1, an honours degree listed in Schedule 2 or a degree with honours listed in Schedule 4, as the case requires; 'faculty' means the Faculty of Information Technology; 'faculty board' means the faculty board of the faculty; 'faculty information handout' means the faculty section of the undergraduate handbook of the university or such other publication, whether bound or loose leaf or on line or in other electronic form, concerning a course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time; 'head' means the head of the relevant school of the faculty; 3. Course of study

2 3.1 The faculty board may determine the requirements of a course of study, including, but not limited to timing, frequency, content and duration; compulsory and elective units; pre requisite, co requisite and sequential units; unit combinations; candidate attendance and participation; credit points; the thesis or project component of an honours degree; assessment; and satisfactory completion. 3.2 The faculty board may determine work experience requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Software Engineering; and special requirements for or in relation to the course of study for a degree undertaken on a particular campus; through off campus learning; or concurrently with another degree under Part IV. 3.3 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout. 4. Mode of candidature 4.1 Candidature for a degree may be full time or, with the consent of the dean, part time; where the faculty board so determines, may be undertaken through offcampus learning; and except as otherwise provided in the regulations, must be continuous. 3 4.2 A candidate may, with the consent of the dean, transfer from full time to parttime candidature or vice versa and, in this event, must complete the course of study in the time specified by the dean. 5. Approval of work 5.1 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate in any year of a course of study may undertake only units which, before enrolment in that year, were specifically approved for the candidate by the dean. 5.2 The dean may authorise a candidate for an award to undertake, in another educational institution, specified study towards the award; and in such event, must in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations, specify the credit that will be granted towards the award in respect of any such studies satisfactorily completed. 6. Credit for equivalent work A candidate granted credit towards a degree must complete the course of study in the time specified by the dean. 7. Single units 7.1 The faculty board may permit a person who is not a candidate for a particular degree to undertake one or more units in the course of study for that degree but, except as otherwise provided in subsection 7.2, no credit may be granted towards the degree in respect of a unit so undertaken. 7.2 The faculty board may, in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations and in respect of a unit undertaken pursuant to subsection 7.1, grant a person credit towards the relevant degree where the unit has been satisfactorily completed; and the person has subsequently become a candidate for the degree. 8. Compliance 8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time. 8.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is Page 3

4 Part II Pass degree 9. Course of study satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study. The course of study for a pass degree comprises units as determined by the faculty board under these regulations. 10. Time limits Except where otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study for a pass degree must be completed in a minimum of three and a maximum of ten years, including any leave of absence, except where credit has been granted whereby the minimum becomes one year. 11. Intermission The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate for a pass degree intermission for one or more periods not exceeding in total three years, provided that any one period must not exceed one year. 12. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a pass degree qualifies for the award of the degree. Part III Honours Degree 13. Course of study The course of study for an honours degree comprises units; and a thesis or project compulsory non graded workshops and seminars as determined by the faculty board under these regulations. 14. Admission to candidature 14.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for an honours degree must have qualified for the award of a pass degree deemed relevant by the faculty board with an average grade of credit or above with a distinction average in the third year Faculty of IT units, or have other qualifications and experience which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. Time limits Except where otherwise determined by the dean in any particular case, the course of study for an honours degree must be completed, including any intermission, in a minimum of one and a maximum of two years of full time candidature or; a minimum of two and a maximum of four years of part time candidature. 16. Intermission The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant to a candidate for an honours degree intermission for a maximum period of one year. 17. Grades of honours An honours degree must be awarded in one of the following grades class I (HI) class II division A (HIIA) or division B (HIIB); or class III (HIII) 18. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for an honours degree qualifies for the award of the degree in the grade determined by the faculty board. Part IV Double Degrees 19. Definition In this part "schedule" means Schedule Double degrees A candidate may, with the approval of the relevant faculty boards, undertake a degree of this faculty specified in Part A of the schedule concurrently with one of the corresponding degrees specified in Part B of the schedule. 21. Reversion to one degree 21.1 A candidate undertaking two degrees concurrently may, with the consent of the faculty board of this faculty, transfer to candidature for a single degree of this faculty Where, pursuant to subsection 21.1, a candidate transfers to candidature for a degree of this faculty only, the faculty board must specify Page 5

6 22. Time limits the units required to be completed by the candidate to qualify for the degree; and the time within which the units must be completed. Except where otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate undertaking a degree of this faculty concurrently with another degree must complete the course of study for both degrees in a minimum of four and a maximum of ten years, including any period of intermission. 23. Qualification A candidate undertaking two degrees concurrently who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a degree of this faculty qualifies for the award of that degree. Part V Degree with Honours 24. Course of study The course of study for a degree with honours comprises units as determined by the faculty board under these regulations. 25. Time limits Except where otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study for a degree with honours must be completed in a minimum of four and a maximum of ten years, including any leave of absence, except where credit has been granted whereby the minimum becomes one year. 26. Intermission The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate for a degree with honours intermission for one or more periods not exceeding in total three years, provided that any one period must not exceed one year. 27. Grades of honours A degree with honours may be awarded in one of the following grades class I (HI) class II division A (HIIA) or division B (HIIB); or class III (HIII) It may also be awarded without an honours grade. 7 28. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a degree with honours qualifies for the award of the degree in the grade determined by the faculty board.
