1 Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences: Masters Degrees Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 19 December 2012 Part I Masters Degrees (General) 1. Masters degrees The masters degrees specified in Schedule I may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to these regulations. 2. Interpretation In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears candidate means a candidate for a degree; course of study means the course of study for a degree determined by the faculty board by or under these regulations; dean means the dean of the faculty; degree means a masters degree specified in Schedule I; faculty means the Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences; faculty board means the board of the faculty; faulty information handout means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound or loose leaf or online or in other electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time; head means the head of the relevant department as the case may be; and minor thesis means a minor thesis prescribed for a course of study by the faculty board under these regulations. 3. Course of study 3.1 A course of study consists of one or more of the following requirements, as determined by the faculty board under these regulations a thesis (including without limitation a minor thesis);

2 3.1.2 units; project work; and clinical placements and other practical work. 3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the requirements of a course of study and in relation to these may determine, any matter or thing including but not limited to, requirements concerning number, timing, content and duration; sequence of units; attendance and participation; credit points; examination; assessment; satisfactory completion; and in relation to a thesis or project research, supervision, submission, distribution, publication and confidentiality. 3.3 The faculty board must cause a determination under subsection 3.2 to be published in a faculty information handout. 4. Admission to candidature An applicant for admission to candidature must to the satisfaction of the faculty board, be adequately prepared for the course of study concerned; meet the specific admission requirements for the degree, if any, as prescribed by the faculty board; and have any qualifications prescribed by the faculty board or qualifications deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute, by the faculty board. 5. Mode of candidature 5.1 Except as otherwise determined by the faculty board, a course of study may be undertaken by full time or part time candidature. 5.2 A candidate may with the consent of the faculty board change from full time to part time candidature or vice versa and in this event must complete the course of study within the time specified by the faculty board. Time limits 6.1 Except as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the maximum period of candidature for a degree including any period of intermission, is the period published in a faculty information handout and determined in accordance with the universities policies. 6.2 The period of candidature for a degree, includes any period of intermission granted to a candidate in accordance with section Intermission The faculty board may, from time to time and subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for a period not exceeding 12 months in total, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines. 8. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes a course of study for a degree is qualified for the award of that degree. 9. Transfer of candidature 9.1 Subject to subsection 9.2, where a candidate has qualified for admission under section 4; and withdrawn from candidature before satisfactorily completing the requirements of the degree but after satisfactorily completing the requirements for a related graduate diploma or graduate certificate, the candidate shall be qualified for the award of a related graduate diploma or graduate certificate as prescribed in Schedule II. 9.2 A candidate may not transfer candidature after a minor thesis has been submitted for examination. 10. Academic progress Subject to Statute Exclusion for unsatisfactory progress, the faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate and 11. Credit after taking into account any recommendation from the head, the supervisor and any other person prescribed in these regulations; and giving the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate the candidate s candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress. 4 A candidate granted credit towards a degree must complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board. 12. Compliance 12.1 Subject to subsection 12.2, a candidate must comply with these regulations and the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board under these regulations as in force or published from time to time Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the particular course of study. 13. Re-admission A former candidate who has discontinued candidature and not received a related graduate diploma or graduate certificate pursuant to section 9 may be re-admitted to candidature by the faculty board subject to any conditions specified, including duration of candidature and credit. Part II Requirements for a Minor Thesis or Project 14. Interpretation This Part II shall apply to the requirements for a minor thesis or project undertaken towards a degree listed in Schedule 3, unless otherwise determined by the faculty board. 15. Submission of minor thesis 15.1 Four copies of the minor thesis or project which shall include a summary and any supporting papers shall be lodged with the registrar together with four separate copies of the summary Unless previously published, the minor thesis or project shall be typewritten or printed on paper of size and quality approved by the faculty board; and bound in a form approved by the faculty board. 16. Certificate of supervisor 16.1 When a candidate has submitted his or her minor thesis or project, the supervisor shall submit a statement certifying to the best of his or her knowledge, the extent to which the work was carried out by the candidate; and Page 4

5 whether, in his or her opinion, the minor thesis or project is properly presented and is prima facie worthy of examination Where the supervisor does not certify that, in his or her opinion, the minor thesis or project is properly presented and is prima facie worthy of examination, the faculty board, after taking into consideration the views of the head, shall determine whether or not the minor thesis or project is to be examined. 17. Examination 17.1 On receipt of the minor thesis or project the faculty board shall, on the recommendation of the head, appoint at least two examiners neither of whom shall be the candidate s supervisor, and unless the faculty board otherwise agrees, at least one of whom shall be external The examiners shall evaluate the minor thesis or project; and each recommend to the faculty board of examiners whether or not the work of the candidate, with or without specified amendments, has met the requirements of the minor thesis or project component, thus allowing the course coordinator to determine whether the candidate has met the course requirements and merits the award of the degree; and perform any other function as prescribed by the regulations or the faculty board. 18. Publication of minor thesis 18.1 After the faculty board has decided that the candidate has satisfied the requirements for the degree it shall require the candidate to have bound in book form two copies of the minor thesis or project, accepted for the purpose of the degree of which one copy shall be lodged by the registrar in the library of the university where it may be made available by the librarian to any person for consultation and photocopying provided that for a period of three years after the minor thesis or project is lodged it shall not be available as aforesaid without the consent in writing of the author; and one copy shall be transmitted to the head of the department concerned Of the other copies submitted pursuant to section one shall be held by the supervisor; one shall be returned to the candidate; and one copy of any minor thesis or project not accepted for the degree shall be lodged with the registrar.
