1 Faculty of Business & Economics: Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 21 March 2013 Part 1 - General 1. Diplomas The graduate and postgraduate diplomas that may be undertaken in the faculty are specified in schedule Interpretations In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears approved means approved by the faculty board; candidate means a candidate for a graduate or postgraduate diploma; course of study in relation to a graduate or postgraduate diploma means the course of study for the diploma as determined by the faculty board under these regulations; dean means the dean of the faculty; executive certificate means an executive certificate awarded by the faculty; faculty means the Faculty of Business and Economics; faculty board means the faculty board of the faculty; faculty information handout means the faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning a course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time; graduate diploma means a graduate diploma specified in part A of schedule 1; postgraduate diploma means a postgraduate diploma specified in part B of schedule Course of study 3.1 A course of study comprises subjects and other work as determined by the faculty board under this section. 3.2 The faculty board may from time to time, with the approval of the Academic Board, determine the units and other work comprising a course of study and in

2 relation to the units and other work may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to number, timing, content and duration; attendance and participation; assessment; credit; and satisfactory completion. 3.3 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout. 4. Approval of work Before enrolling in any year of a course of study, a candidate must obtain the dean's approval of the units and other work proposed to be undertaken by the candidate in that year. 5. Credit for equivalent work A candidate may be granted credit for equivalent work in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations. Where credit is granted, the candidate must complete the relevant course of study within the time specified by the dean. 6. Time limits Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines or as otherwise provided in these regulations, a candidate must complete a course of study in a maximum of eight semesters; and a minimum of two semesters of full-time candidature or four semesters of part-time candidature. 7. Intermission The faculty board may grant a candidate an intermission for such periods and on such conditions as the faculty board determines. 8. Submission of previous work A candidate must not submit for a graduate or postgraduate diploma any work previously accepted or, except with the permission of the faculty board, previously submitted for an award of the university or of any other educational institution. 9 Reversion from graduate diploma to graduate certificate Where part A of schedule 1 specifies a graduate certificate in relation to a graduate diploma, a person who - Page 2

3 9.1 in the course of candidature for the graduate diploma satisfies the requirements of the graduate certificate; and 9.2 subsequently withdraws from candidature for the graduate diploma - is qualified for the award of the graduate certificate. 10. Satisfactory completion A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a graduate or postgraduate diploma qualifies for that diploma. 11. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements 11.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a graduate or postgraduate diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study. Part 2 - Admission to candidature 12. Graduate diplomas 12.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for a graduate diploma must have qualified for a bachelor degree from an Australian university with a weighted average mark as determined by the faculty board; or hold a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board; or have qualified for an executive certificate with an average grade of credit or above An applicant for admission to candidature for a graduate diploma must satisfy the specific admission requirements specified in part A of schedule Postgraduate diplomas An applicant for admission to candidature for a postgraduate diploma must have qualified in the university or in an approved educational institution for a bachelor degree; or hold a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board; and Page 3

4 Schedule have satisfied the specific admission requirements specified in part B of schedule 1. Part A - Graduate diplomas Graduate Diploma Graduate Diploma in Accounting Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics Specific Admission Requirements Previous degree in a nonaccounting discipline Credit level achievement in introductory statistics at tertiary level preferred Alternative Exit Award Graduate Diploma in Business None Graduate Diploma in Economic Studies Graduate Diploma in Health Economics and Policy Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management Successful completion of year 12 mathematics preferred Consideration given to relevant work experience Work experience required Pharmacoeconomics after 24 points (specific units) Part B - Postgraduate Diplomas Postgraduate Diploma Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Commerce Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and Commerce Specific Admission Requirements Bachelors degree in business or commerce Bachelors degree with a major in the proposed area of study for the diploma Page 4
