7 2. OCCUPANT EMERGENCY PROCEDURES 2.1 SIGNS The actions to be taken by occupants in emergency situations are required to be posted. A sample sign which must be posted at all fire alarm pull stations in buildings equipped with a SINGLE STAGE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM is: (Red lettering on white background is an effective colour combination for this sign) IN CASE OF FIRE UPON DISCOVERY OF FIRE Leave fire area immediately and close door Sound the fire alarm, pull the manual station Call the fire department DIAL 911 Leave the building by the nearest exit DO NOT USE ELEVATORS UPON HEARING FIRE ALARM Leave the building by the nearest exit Close doors behind you, take door key DO NOT USE ELEVATORS CAUTION If smoke is heavy in the corridor it may be safer to stay in your area. Close door and place wet towel at base of door. If you encounter smoke in stairway, use alternate exit. REMAIN CALM The fire alarm system is to be activated to alert the other occupants of an emergency and to put into operation the approved fire safety plan. The fire department is to be notified by telephoning 911 and giving the correct address and the exact location of the fire. 2.2 SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS TO OCCUPANTS ON FIRE PROCEDURES Occupants include people who work in the building and have no supervisory staff responsibilities, including contractors who work in the building on a temporary basis. These occupants must be informed of fire safety responsibilities. November

8 Visitors, guests and the general public are also considered occupants, the emergency procedure sign is your way of informing them of occupant emergency procedures IN THE EVENT OF FIRE OR SMOKE OCCUPANTS WILL: LEAVE the fire area, taking any persons in the immediate vicinity with you CLOSE doors behind you to limit the spread of fire and smoke ACTIVATE the fire alarm at the nearest pull station to alert other occupants, PULL the manual fire alarm pull station GO to a safe area or outside the building, via the stairs, and TELEPHONE the Toronto Fire Department - DIAL 911. Never assume this has been done. Know and give the correct address of the building (25 Ballyconnor Court Bayview and Steeles), and the location of the fire in the building (e.g. storage room 2 located in the U/C Basement) EXIT the building IMMEDIATELY DO NOT RE-ENTER the building until it is declared SAFE to do so by the Chief Fire Official Go to the grouping area outside the building (along the fence) Follow directions of managers, supervisors or fire department IF YOU HEAR THE FIRE ALARM SIGNAL: Shut down non-essential equipment in your work area and ensure doors are closed to all areas. (Closed doors will give you protection as well as protection for your records and equipment.) Immediately proceed to exit the building. Before opening any door, feel door and doorknob for heat. If not hot, brace yourself against the door and open it slightly. If you feel air pressure or a hot draft, close door quickly. If possible, use an alternate exit. At the alternate exit repeat this process. If there are no safe exits or you physically challenged Stay & Defend as per EXIT the building by the nearest exit or stairwell, if it is not clear of smoke or fumes use the alternate exit or stairwell. 9 Do not retrieve personal belongings Remove high-heeled shoes for going down stairs Keep hand on wall or railing while moving Keep calm, assist others to exit Reassure others and stay calm Report to Chief Fire Official any persons who refused or were unable to exit the building Once outside, go to your grouping area along the fence and stay there unless otherwise directed by managers, supervisors or fire department. General grouping area is around the fence surrounding the parking lot. Driveway and roadway access must be kept clear for emergency vehicles. Fire wardens of your area may designate a specific area for your department or residence floor. DO NOT return to the building unless authorized by fire department IF YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE BUILDING BY ANY EXITS BECAUSE OF FIRE OR HEAVY SMOKE OR YOU ARE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED AND CANNOT USE THE STAIRS, REMAIN (STAY & DEFEND INSTRUCTIONS): If you are on an upper floor do not jump Go to a room or area with a window and telephone farthest from the side of the building where the fire is located, if possible Close any doors to reduce the spread of fire and/or smoke Unlock door for possible entry of firefighter Dial 911 and tell the Toronto Fire Department where you are then signal to fire fighters by waving at the window. You are at 25 Ballyconnor Court near Bayview and Steeles. Also give your location in the building, such as floor number and area Seal all cracks where smoke can get in, especially around door frame and heating and air conditioning outlets. Use available material or clothing and wet if possible, a roll of wide strong masking tape is also useful Alert others to your location. Crouch low to the floor if smoke enters the room Move to the most protected area. Do not open doors without first feeling door from top down. Keep hot doors closed. If door is cool, brace foot 6 inches from door, open slowly, close it fast if you feel air pressure or a hot draft. November

10 Use any balconies that are available if there is no physical danger such as smoke, etc. Wait to be rescued. Remain calm. Do not panic or jump. Listen for instructions or information which may be given by authorized personnel over speakers or loud hailers. The fire department is on the scene within minutes of the alarm REMEMBER A fire establishes itself within the first few minutes. To save your life, you must know what to do. It is extremely important to recognize the early visible signs of a fire and to have rehearsed the emergency procedures of your building. Early detection and alarm could give you the extra time which could save your life. Remember, your initial reaction and the time involved may determine your safety. At the first sign of smoke, obnoxious fumes or strange odours, immediately leave the area taking other occupants in that area with you. Remain Calm. Close the doors behind you. Alert other building occupants in your building BY ACTIVATING THE FIRE ALARM. PULL THE MANUAL ALARM STATION. Manual alarm stations are located by each exit on each floor. For your safety, go to a safe area and call the Toronto Fire Department IMMEDIATELY DIAL 911. DO NOT assume that someone else has called. The emergency phone number (police, fire, ambulance) is 911. It is also a good idea to write down your building address next to your telephone. In a state of panic, it is possible that you or a visitor will forget. Fast reporting of a fire can make the difference It is crucial for you to be familiar with your surroundings and emergency procedures. Know the location of the exit stairwells. Be sure you know the location of fire and safety equipment and how to operate the equipment. Check out all alternate escape routes. It is critical to know what to do in the event of fire or smoke. When you exit the building in the event of an alarm or fire take other persons in your area with you, especially handicapped persons and persons who are not familiar with the building. Go to the grouping area along the fence to meet other occupants. This may eliminate confusion if you become separated when leaving the building. A list of names and location of persons with disabilities or any other persons who require special assistance to evacuate the building must be updated as necessary and placed in the fire safety plan box. Remember: smoke is the first sign of a fire. November

11 3. CONFINING, CONTROLLING AND EXTINGUISHING A FIRE 3.1 CONFINING, CONTROLLING & EXTINGUISHING Confining a fire in an enclosed space will keep the fire, smoke and fumes from entering into a means of exit. In many cases this can be accomplished if one remembers to close the door when leaving the fire area. Controlling a fire or preventing its spread, by closing the door, will permit a reasonable period of time necessary for escape from the building. In the event of a fire, judgment may be necessary in deciding which action is appropriate in a given situation. NOTE: The production of noxious fumes in modern buildings makes any attempt at fire fighting extremely dangerous to untrained personnel, particularly if a large amount of smoke is being generated. Fire extinguishment, control and confinement is primarily the responsibility of the Fire Department. Your primary responsibility when you detect smoke or fire is to leave the fire area, taking other occupants with you, close doors behind you, pull the manual alarm and Dial 9ll and notify the fire department of the fire emergency. DO NOT fight fire unless you are trained, properly equipped and confident of your ability to do so - life safety is priority. Make sure you have an escape route at all times and a backup person. 3.2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS The fire extinguishers located in the building are classed A, ABC and BC. Both ABC & BC extinguishers are dry chemical extinguishers, whereas class A extinguishers are pressurized water. Learn how to operate the extinguishers in your building. Learn the classifications of fires. CLASSIFICATION OF FIRES A = ORDINARY COMBUSTIBLES, e.g. wood paper, trash, etc. B = FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS, e.g. oil, grease, etc. C = ENERGIZED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, e.g. electrical panel, etc Note: Never use water on class B or C fires FIRE EXTINGUISHER PROCEDURES

12 Before Extinguishing Fire: Pull the manual alarm to notify occupants. Call fire department immediately. Preferably, work with a partner. Always have a safe exit route. FIRE HAZARDS, PRECAUTIONS & OCCUPANT RESPONSIBILITIES 4.1 FIRE HAZARDS & PRECAUTIONS GENERAL A high standard of housekeeping and building maintenance is probably the most important single factor in the prevention of fire. Listed below are some specific directions to avoid fire hazards: Combustible waste materials shall not be stored in any other area than designated areas. Combustible materials shall not be permitted to accumulate in any part of stairways or other routes to exits. Combustible materials shall not be used to absorb flammable or combustible liquid spills within buildings. Greasy or oily rags or materials subject to spontaneous heating shall be deposited in a proper safety container or be removed from the premises. Do not put in garbage cans use safety containers. Do not fuel equipment inside the building, e.g. lawn mowers, snowblowers, etc. DO NOT use unsafe electrical equipment, frayed extension cords, over-loaded outlets. All ashes shall be stored in proper safety containers and combustible materials shall not be stored with ashes in the same container. Flammable liquids shall not be used for cleaning purposes. Use extreme caution when using items with open flames. Do Not use flammable decorating materials. Avoid careless smoking. Use ashtrays. DO NOT put burning materials such as cigarettes and ashes into garbage cans. Turn off office equipment, etc. when not in use. Unplug coffee pots, toasters and other small appliances when not in use. Keep stairwell doors closed at all times and access routes to exits clear. 4.2 OCCUPANT RESPONSIBILITIES Be familiar with and follow occupant emergency procedures in the event of alarm or fire. Assist persons not familiar with the building in the event of an emergency. Survey the areas where you work to determine the number of exits available. Know the location of fire protection equipment in the common areas of the building. (e.g. fire extinguishers and manual pull stations) Be familiar with fire hazards and control fire hazards in your area. Do not block exit doors. Exit doors must be accessible and must not be locked shut. Keep exit routes clear of all obstructions.

OCCUPANT INFORMATION ON FIRE PROTECTION AND LIFE SAFETY EQUIPMENT FEATURES IN THE BUILDING Following is a brief description of a number of fire protection equipment and life safety features which are present in this building and as an occupant you should know their purpose for life safety in the event of an emergency: 5.1 FIRE ALARM SYSTEM The purpose of a fire alarm system is to alert all the occupants of the building that an emergency of fire exists so that such occupants may put into practice the measures required by the FIRE SAFETY PLAN. This building is equipped with a single stage fire alarm system. Upon activation an alarm signals that complete evacuation is required throughout the building. The fire alarm may be activated by a manual pull station, smoke detector, heat detector or water flow alarm device. 5.2 EXITS An exit is that part of a means of egress that leads from the floor area it serves to a public thoroughfare or to an approved open space. Walls, floors, doors or other means provide a protected path necessary for occupants to proceed with reasonable safety to a place of refuge. Vertical shafts accessed from above or below grade are protected from the remainder of the building, provided the doors leading to the shaft are kept closed. Know the location of all exits from the building. 5.3 FIRE DEPARTMENT ACCESS Fire department access allows firefighters and their equipment to gain access to the building. Vehicles parked in a fire route, excessive vegetation, snow and other forms of obstructions to access routes, fire hydrants and fire department connections are not permitted by the FIRE CODE. 5.4 PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Portable fire extinguishers are intended as a first aid measure to cope with fires of limited size. Portable extinguishers are rated for the corresponding classes of fire. Use extinguishers only if trained and there is a safe route of escape from the area. 5.5 AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS An automatic sprinkler system is a series of underground and overhead piping, heads and a device for actuating an alarm when the system is in operation designed in accordance with fire protection engineering standards. The system is connected to a water supply such as municipal water supply. The system is activated automatically by heat from fire and discharges water over the affected area only Tyndale active sprinklers located only in the basement of the University College. 5.6 EMERGENCY LIGHTING Emergency lighting ensures that exits, corridors and principal routes providing access to exits are illuminated in the event of a loss of power.

16 5.7 EXIT LIGHTS Exit lights indicate the location or access route of an exit. Exits lights must be illuminated at all times. 5.8 STANDPIPE SYSTEM A water supply piping system that connects to various fire hose stations throughout the building to supply emergency water supply for extinguishment of fires. Each hose station is equipped with a flexible hose for immediate use as well as a larger valve for fire department hose connection.

Larger tenant occupancies will designate sufficient fire wardens to handle responsibilities during fire or alarm in the building. A general rule is for a fire warden to be able to investigate their designated floor area within 30 seconds. EXIT SUPERVISORS Exit supervisors will be designated for each main floor exit. PERSONNEL MANAGERS The personnel managers of large tenant occupancies will be designated to fulfill fire safety responsibilities.

19 7. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BUILDING OWNER The building owner has numerous responsibilities related to fire safety. They must ensure the following measures are incorporated in the Fire Safety Plan: Emergency procedures to be used in case of fire including: sounding the fire alarm notifying the fire department provisions for access for fire fighting instructing occupants on procedures to be followed when the fire alarm sounds evacuating endangered occupants confining, controlling and extinguishing the fire The appointment and organization of designated supervisory staff. The instruction of supervisory staff and other occupants. The holding of fire drills. The control of fire hazards in the building. The maintenance of building facilities provided for the safety of occupants. The provisions of alternative measure for safety of occupants during any shutdown of fire protection equipment and systems or part thereof. The fire safety plan shall be approved by the Chief Fire Official. Supervisory staff and occupants shall be trained and the fire safety plan shall be implemented. Schematic diagrams shall be prepared, approved and maintained showing the type and location of building fire emergency systems. Instructions for operation of building fire emergency systems available for use. A copy of the fire emergency procedures and other duties for supervisory staff as laid down in the fire safety plan shall be given to all supervisory staff. Fire emergency procedures shall be prominently posted and maintained.

SPECIFIC SUPERVISORY STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES AND FIRE & ALARM EMERGENCY INSTRUCTIONS 8.1 RESPONSIBILITIES RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR In the event of fire, judgement may be necessary in deciding which action is appropriate in a given situation. It is your responsibility to make the selection which achieves the greatest protection for the occupants. Organize and train supervisory staff and ensure continued fire safety awareness within the building. Do occupant training or review as necessary. Maintain the fire alarm system and other fire protection equipment in good operating condition at all times. Ensure maintenance as per the Ontario Fire Code is completed on schedule. In the event of any shutdown of fire protection equipment, follow the alternative measures as outlined in the Fire Safety Plan. Train assistants to act in your position during your absence. Know emergency procedures. Know how to reset the fire alarm system. Ensure fire drills are performed. Ensure a list of all disabled occupants is maintained and updated as necessary. Keep a copy of list in a fire safety box. Locate the fire safety plan outside the building, in the fire alarm control room or in a location acceptable to the fire department. Notify the North York Fire Department of any changes that will affect the Plan. Post above or near each pull station on each floor an "Emergency Procedure" sign. Identify each service room. Assure identification names correspond in the building and in the Fire Safety Plan.

22 8.1.2 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BUILDING SUPERINTENDENT In the event of fire or alarm, judgement may be necessary in deciding which action is appropriate in a given situation. It is your responsibility to make the selection which achieves the greatest protection for the occupants. Know emergency procedures. Know the function of the fire protection and life safety equipment and how to reset the fire alarm system. Control fire hazards in the building. Know the duties of the other supervisory staff. Perform fire drills for supervisory staff of the building. Complete on schedule the in-house maintenance checks and inspections as per the Ontario Fire Code. Keep all fire protection and life safety equipment free of obstructions. Maintain "Emergency Procedure" signs and service room signs. Maintain the list of physically challenged persons. A copy should be placed in maintenance office and in the fire safety plan box. The fire safety plan box is to be located outside the main entrance. In the event of any shutdown of fire protection equipment, follow the alternative measures as outlined in the Fire Safety Plan. Notify the Operations Supervisor of any changes that will affect the fire safety plan RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FIRE WARDENS Know occupant emergency procedures. Train assistants to act in your position during your absence from the building. Participate in fire drills. Be familiar with duties of the other supervisory staff. Fulfill duties in the event of fire or alarm in the building. Know the location of physically challenged occupants in your area and the proper procedures during an alarm or fire. Ensure stairways, landings, hallways, passageways and exits (inside and out) in your designated area are kept clear of any obstructions at all times.

23 Advise the Building Superintendent immediately if you notice that any building fire protection equipment requires repair or service. Control fire hazards in your designated area. Fulfill personnel manager duties as well if one is not designated for your area RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PERSONNEL MANAGER, (HR Director) Distribute fire safety information from fire safety plan to all occupants of your designated occupancy, initially or as required, and to new employee. Inform new occupants of emergency procedures, location of exits and fire extinguishers. Fire safety should be included in company orientation program. Maintain a list of physically challenged occupants or occupants who require assistance to exit the building and update information as required. Ensure the list is current. Give information to Building Superintendent in writing RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EXIT SUPERVISORS (security guards) Know occupant emergency procedures. Participate in fire drills. Train assistants to act in your position during your absence from the building. Be familiar with duties of the other supervisory staff. Fulfill duties in the event of fire or alarm in the building RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SECURITY COMPANY & RESPONSE PERSONNEL Know how to reset the fire alarm system. In the event of any shutdown of fire protection equipment, follow the alternative measures as outlined in the Fire Safety Plan. 8.2 FIRE & ALARM EMERGENCY INSTRUCTIONS UPON DISCOVERY OF FIRE, THE MAINTENANCE SHALL: Leave the fire area immediately, taking any persons in the immediate vicinity with you.

24 Close all doors on your way out. Sound the fire alarm by activating a pull station. Go to a safe area and Dial 911 and advise the Toronto Fire Department of the fire emergency. Give the correct address and the location of the fire in the building. (The safe area is located along the fence beyond the parking lot.) DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS, use the exit stairs to go to the main entrance. Provide access, building access keys and vital information for the fire department. See that the fire alarm signals are not silenced until the fire department has responded and the fire has been extinguished and/or investigated and approval to reset has been granted by the North York Fire Department. Ensure the safety of the occupants. Do not allow anyone to enter or re-enter the building until authorized by the Chief Fire Official. Follow the instructions of the Chief Fire Official once they are on the premise but continue to aid in the safety of the occupants IN THE EVENT THE ALARM IS HEARD, THE MAINTENANCE SHALL: DIAL 911 and advise the Toronto Fire Department of the emergency. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS, use the exit stairwells. Go to the main lobby, if safe to do so. Check annunciator for location of alarm, if safe to do so. Ground the elevator. Provide access, building access keys, physically challenged list and vital information for the fire department. See that the fire alarm signals are not silenced until the fire department has responded and the fire has been extinguished and/or investigated and approval to reset has been granted by the Toronto Fire Department. Ensure the safety of the occupants. Do not allow anyone to enter or re-enter the building until authorized by the Chief Fire Official. Follow the instructions of the Chief Fire Official once they are on the premise but continue to aid in the safety of the occupants.

25 8.2.3 UPON DISCOVERY OF FIRE, WARDEN SHALL: Leave the fire area immediately, taking any persons in the immediate vicinity with you. Close all doors on your way out. Sound the fire alarm by activating a pull station. Exit the building. Go to a safe area and Dial 911 and advise the Toronto Fire Department of the fire emergency. Give the correct address and the location of the fire in the building. (The safe area is located along the fence beyond the parking lot.) DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS, use exit stairwells. Go to the main entrance and report to the person in command, e.g. Building Superintendent or Chief Fire Official. Go to your grouping area along the fence and ensure all occupants are accounted for. Assist occupants, as necessary, once outside the building. Do not attempt to move vehicles. Follow the instructions of the person in command or the Chief Fire Official IN THE EVENT THE ALARM IS HEARD, THE FIRE WARDEN SHALL: Immediately direct all occupants to the nearest exit. If the exit stairwell is not clear of smoke or toxic fumes, calmly advise occupants to attempt to use alternate exits. Remain calm - Note - Although speed in evacuation is desirable, it is secondary to maintenance of proper order and discipline during the evacuation. Where possible, check all rooms in your respective zone before leaving the floor to ensure all occupants have evacuated. Where possible, check to ensure all exit fire doors are closed in your respective zone. Always listen and respond to further instructions of the Chief Fire Official. Assist physically challenged occupants. Exit the building. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS, use exit stairwells.

26 If any person should refuse to leave the building or disable occupants cannot leave the area go to the main entrance and report vital information to the person in command. Go to your grouping area along the fence and ensure all occupants are accounted for. Assist occupants, as necessary, once outside the building. Do not attempt to remove vehicles. Follow the instructions of the person in command or Chief Fire Official UPON DISCOVERY OF FIRE, THE EXIT SUPERVISOR SHALL: Leave the fire area immediately, taking any persons in the immediate vicinity with you and close all doors on your way out. Sound the fire alarm by activating a pull station. Go to a safe area and Dial 911 and advise the Toronto Fire Department of the fire emergency. Give the correct address and the location of the fire in the building. Exit the building. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS, use the exit stairwells Report vital information to the maintenance staff or firefighters at the main entrance. Go to your designated exit, if safe to do so. Assure occupants do not re-enter the building until authorized by Chief Fire Official. Radio Head Warden when all occupants have finished exiting through your designated exit. Remain at position, when safe to do so, until the "All Clear" announcement has been given by person in command or you are directed otherwise by the supervisory staff, fire fighter. DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL AUTHORIZED BY THE CHIEF FIRE OFFICIAL Provide access, building access keys and vital information for the fire department. See that the fire alarm signals are not silenced until the fire department has responded and the fire has been extinguished and/or investigated by the Toronto Fire Department. Ensure the safety of the occupants. Do not allow anyone to enter or re-enter the building until authorized by the Chief Fire Official. Follow the instructions of the Chief Fire Official once they are on the premise. Reset fire alarm system or follow alternative measures as necessary. Report response call and action to Campus Facilities Manager and Campus Operations Director.

ALTERNATIVE MEASURES FOR FIRE ALARM SYSTEM, SPRINKLER SYSTEM, AND/OR SPECIAL EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS The established procedure when any part of the FIRE ALARM SYSTEM, SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND/OR STANDPIPE SYSTEM is inoperative is as follows: In the event of any shutdown of the above listed equipment or any part of it, the fire department, supervisory staff and occupants must be notified. The Operations Supervisor and Building Superintendent are to be directly notified immediately and alternative measures should be established. The other staff and occupants can be notified by posting notices in the building. Post notices at all exit locations. An attempt to minimize the impact of malfunctioning equipment is necessary (e.g.: where portions of a sprinkler or fire alarm system is placed out of service, service to remaining portions will be maintained). Have systems repaired or re-instated to normal operation as soon as possible. Assistance and direction for specific situations will be sought from the fire department. Alternate provisions or actions to be taken in case of an emergency must be acceptable to the Chief Fire Official. Notify the Toronto Fire Department at the Communications Division at DO NOT DIAL 911 THE EMERGENCY NUMBER. The Building Superintendent, Security Person and/or other designated staff will patrol the affected area every hour. If all or part of the audible signals are inoperative the persons patrolling the affected Fire Wardens will carry whistles to alert occupants of a fire emergency. The Building Superintendent will have available at least one portable mega speaker. When the defective system or equipment has been repaired and once again operational: Notify the Operations Supervisor and Building Superintendent and remove the posted notices. Notify the Toronto Fire Department at the Communications Division, when repairs have been completed and the system or equipment is operational. NOTE: The Toronto Fire Department is to be notified in writing, of shutdowns longer than 24 hours.

31 10. TRAINING The Supervisory Staff must be made familiar with all emergency procedures as detailed in the fire safety plan that applies to their particular position. Drills and inspections should be arranged, as necessary, to assure the effective continuance of the program. The implementation is the responsibility of the Operations Supervisor. Responsibility for the continuance of the program is that of all the Building Superintendent and Operations Supervisor. The responsibility for fire drills assessment is the responsibility of the Operations Supervisor. Emergency procedures must form a part of the in-house training program. It is presumed that such training will include certain basic items such as prompt reporting of fire, location and operation of the manual pull stations, fire alarm system and fire extinguishers as well as limiting fire and smoke spread by closing doors, taking measures as may be necessary to protect occupants, including evacuation, and above all, concealment, from occupants, of any apprehension that may be felt by the staff. As well, occupants should be informed of work-related situations that can create fire hazards. It is important that all Supervisory Staff survey the building to determine the number and locations of exits and means of egress available from each floor area. They must recognize fire hazards and fire separation areas. They must know occupant emergency procedures as well as their own specific duties and responsibilities. Building Superintendent and Fire Wardens must be trained on procedures for physically challenged occupants of the building. The Supervisory Staff must be trained before they are given any fire safety responsibilities.

33 11. THE HOLDING OF FIRE DRILLS This section provides detailed information regarding established Fire Drill Procedures in your building METHOD AND FREQUENCY OF HOLDING FIRE DRILLS: Fire Drills are to be held semesterly (3 per year). The participation of the Supervisory Staff is required. Occupant participation is recommended. Occupants are to be notified of the exact time and date of the fire drill. Occupants are to be advised not to phone the fire department during the fire drill. Post notices. Notify the monitoring agency at (ID Code: L0815) just prior to commencement of the fire drill. Give approximate duration of the drill. The Supervisory Staff are to meet ten minutes prior to the drill for a briefing meeting. Designate one of the supervisory staff to pull a manual alarm at the designated alarm time and advise everyone which manual alarm pull station will be activated. The floor areas are to be covered by the supervisory staff. Instruct the supervisory staff, who are covering the floor areas, to: Ensure alarm signals can be heard throughout all areas that they are covering. Ensure all fire doors are closed. Ensure all stairwells, landings, exits, means of egress and fire doors are clear of any obstruction. The Supervisory staff will proceed to their designated zones 5 minutes before the alarm test and check exits and stairwells. The fire alarm system will be activated by use of a pull station at the arranged time: The supervisory staff during the alarm test will follow their procedures and will assure bells can be heard throughout area and will observe and note response of occupants. The Building Superintendent will follow the alarm procedures, but will only act out the procedure of dialing 911. The Operations Supervisor will assess the fire drill for: supervisory staff s knowledge of emergency procedures supervisory staff performance during fire drills occupant performance and knowledge training requirements The Building Superintendent will verify correct annunciation of the pull station operated. After the bells have rung for at least one minute the Building Superintendent will reset the fire alarm. The fire department communications department will be notified by the Building Superintendent that the fire alarm drill is complete and the fire alarm system has been restored to normal operation. All Supervisory Staff will return to the meeting area to discuss any noted deficiencies. Remove all the notices.

MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES FOR FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT Regular maintenance must be performed on the fire and life safety equipment in the building in accordance with the Ontario Fire Code. A written record shall be kept for all tests, corrective measures performed by Contractors. All records must be kept for a period of two years after they are made, and the records shall be made available upon request to the Chief Fire Official. Fire Prevention Officers may check to ensure that the necessary checks, inspections and/or tests are being done, during the course of a fire inspection. Included is a list maintenance requirements that apply to your building. The first section (14.1) of inspection can be completed by an in-house maintenance person if properly trained, otherwise a contractor should be contracted to complete the work. The second section (14.2) is the maintenance that is technical and is to be completed by competent contractor/s. Refer to the Ontario Fire Code for detailed maintenance information. The fire department must be notified before and after any maintenance work that could initiate an alarm or place life safety and fire protection equipment out of service. Check as often as necessary to ensure fire doors are closed and exit stairwells and doors are clear and unobstructed WEEKLY Visually check all hoods, filters and ducts of heating, ventilating, air-equipment that is subject to accumulations of combustible deposits and clean as required to keep clear of fire hazardous deposits. Check exit signs to ensure they are illuminated MONTHLY Check pilot lights on self-contained emergency lighting units to ensure proper operation of lamps. Inspect units to ensure terminal connections are clean, free of corrosion, lubricated and tight. Check the batteries at battery bank to ensure terminals are clean and lubricated and terminal clamps are secure. Test the fire alarm system by pulling a manual pull station. Check the bells to ensure they are operational. Check the annunciator to ensure the correct zone showed on annunciator. Use panel light test to ensure all fire alarm panel and annunciator lights activate. Check the batteries to ensure terminals are clean and lubricated and terminal clamps are secure. Inspect and check doors in fire separations. Inspect door hardware and other ancillary components and make adjustments or repairs as necessary. Keep guides, bearings and stay rolls clean and lubricated. Also ensure doors are unobstructed and/or closed. Check fire extinguishers and ensure the pressure gauge reading is in the operable range. Also check nozzle for obstruction and ensure seal or tamper indicators are in place. Ensure extinguishers have not been tampered with and are undamaged. Perform a sprinkler system alarm test using alarm test connection located at sprinkler valve. Inspect valves that are locked open EVERY TWO MONTHS Test supervisory transmitters and water-flow devices of sprinkler systems. Inspect valves that are electrically supervised ANNUALLY Verify shut down operation of automatic disconnect switches. Inspect fire dampers and fire-stop flaps.
