2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ASSE Long Beach January 2012 We had our first of the year, January 11, 2012; kick off meeting to start the New Year right. Our speakers, Bonney Hodges and Richard Cerenzio from ISN Contractor Safety, spoke on understanding current challenges in managing contractors/subcontractors and included recommended best practices and maintaining good contractor programs. In addition to a great business meeting we had a special joint tour with ASSE LA Chapter which was held at the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of California-Los Angeles. We had a special Kitchen and Gallery Tour lead by Chef Christophe Bernard the Academic Chair and Joshua Joe Operations Manager. Knife sharpening safety demonstration was included. Christopher Capehart discussed and presented safe knife handling. The tour group was then treated to enjoy a three course lunch prepared by culinary students and aspiring chefs. This was a great event. We had a winner, Harold Day, for the monthly $25.00 drawing for being at the meeting. Each month $25.00 is added to the amount. Mr. Day put the $25 back into the kitty for next month. February s meeting will earn $50.00 if your name is drawn during the meeting and you are present. Our Chapter financial status as of December 31, 2011 is a total of $8, The breakdown is that we have $5, in our savings account, $ in our checking account and $ in petty cash. Anyone interested in obtaining additional information concerning our finances, feel free to contact me as I am the current acting treasurer. I am looking forward to our February meeting. The meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2012 at the Petroleum Club. We are fortunate to have Nelson Kerr, MPA, REHS, Manager of the CUPA for Long Beach to discuss HazMat Annual Reporting and understanding Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA). See you there. (President s Message continued on following page)

3 Safety Realities: The statistics are in now and unfortunately California is leading in the Vehicular Deaths in one year with 3081 followed by Texas with This truly is a record we do not want to keep. Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of occupational fatalities and cause 60% of non-occupational related deaths. It is estimated that more than $40 billion is spent in lost wages, medical costs and miscellaneous expense resulting from motor vehicle accidents. California Highway Patrol reported that every 1 minute and 7 seconds there is a motor vehicle accident. Distracted driving is the leading cause for motor vehicle accidents. The National Safety Council studies show cell telephone usage is a leading cause of distraction and is working diligently to ban cell telephone usage across the United States. Driving requires your full attention. Having an effective safe driving program is important in every industry. Be a defensive driver at all times completely prepared for the road. After all, driving is everyone s responsibility. Let s all work together to not have the leading record for vehicular deaths next year in California. Respectfully Submitted, Marianne Thomas Marianne Thomas CSP, REA, CPEA, MBA President Long Beach Chapter of ASSE
