LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD - Sustainability ENERGY STRATEGY Reducing Energy Demand Renewable Energy Systems Energy Storage Knowledge Transfer / Green Jobs Long Term / Budget Issues CORE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES Central Plants Demand Management Thermal Energy Storage Peak Management Solar Photovoltaic Arrays Solar Thermal Systems Micro-Turbine Generators Centralized Monitoring LA Valley College Solar Thermal Water Heating Installation LA Southwest College Thermal Storage Facility (Ice Farm)
LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD Sustainability: CENTRAL PLANTS Campus with No Central Plant Primary Function: produce hot and cold water that is used to air condition and heat buildings Each Building has its own air-conditioning and heating system CENTRAL PLANT Reduces equipment cost Lowers cost to maintain & operate Introduces higher efficiency equipment that lowers utility bills Makes it easier to add new technology over time
LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD Sustainability: SOLAR THERMAL WATER HEATING Generates hot water using the sun that is stored in tanks at the Central Plant LA Valley College Solar Thermal Water Heating Installation Distributes hot water to buildings for Central Plant Cool Buildings absorption chiller Sinks, showers, Washing machines Heat swimming pools Heating Buildings
LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD Sustainability: ICE FARM - THERMAL STORAGE LACCD EXAMPLE: LA Southwest College Cool storage system comprised of: 72 Ice Storage tanks Two Chillers Supply Ice-Cooled Water During Peak Hours Ice Storage Tanks Produce Ice During Off-Peak Hours Chiller Chiller LA Southwest College Ice Farm Thermal Storage Central Plant Chilled Water Supply to Campus Chilled Water Return From Campus Supplies about 9,900 ton-hours of cooling capacity to the campus over the course of a typical design day. Chillers each have a capacity of 910 tons during the "daytime mode" and 640 tons when in icemaking mode. Operating with an average cooling supply temperature of 23 F and return temperature of 30 F.
LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD Sustainability: ENERGY SAVINGS Total College Building Area, Millions SF % Growth 4.9 million square feet Total College Building Area Before Bond Program $6.05 M annual electric bill million square feet Total College Building Area After Bond Program complete Added 3.1 million square feet Buildings provide much more technology $5.4 M annual electric bill 2014 Before 2001 After Annual College Electric Cost $ Millions (2014 Rates)
LACCD BUILDING PROGRAM BuildLACCD - Sustainability Direct Effects of the LACCD Sustainable Building Program: ENERGY Reduced the Energy Usage per Student as represented by the Energy Usage Intensity Index (EUI). EUI developed from research undertaken by various environmental and energy regulating agencies. EUI correlates energy consumption from all fossil-fuel sources into one convenient index. EUI (kbtu/sf-yr) = (E * 3.41) + (NG * 100) + (FO * 138) + (P * 91) / SF Where: E is the electric use for the building in kwh NG is Natural Gas in therms FO is fuel oil in gallons P is Propane in gallons SF is the gross square footage of the building The EUI presents a 12 month usage index. Energy Usage Intensity Index Community Colleges (avg) 70 ELAC LACC LAHC LAMC LAPC LASC LATTC LAVC VDK WLAC 38.80
