3 THE WEST AUSTRALIAN SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, Innovative approach to education gives a world of choice and and IB Diploma, from left to right: Liam Salter, Hannah Bougher, Kylie Yu, Monty Phillips and Aidan Archer. IB prepares Scotch boys for Oxford IB Diploma student, Joseph Steinberg, has his sights set on Oxford. Joseph Steinberg is delighted that he chose to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma as it has placed him in the box seat for Oxford University. As it is internationally recognised, the Diploma allows him to apply directly to the world s leading universities. Joseph chose Oxford as he is passionate about studying literature and is competing for one of only seven places. In addition to his IB Diploma results, the admission process included an examination at Oxford and two interviews. Both interview panels commented that Joseph s interpretations were exciting and well considered. Joseph revelled in the challenge of the interview process, saying, I now see that the IB courses gave me the necessary standards and skills required by universities like Oxford. As the IB Diploma has given Joseph an international benchmark of his abilities, he knows he is than capable of holding his own at Oxford. Language studies translate into opportunities Whether they choose the IB Diploma or, Scotch excel in their study of Spanish, French and Indonesian, than half of the scoring over 75 in the 2012 examinations. graduate and General Exhibition Winner, Randolph Dobson, understands the benefits of language study, I intend to study at UWA and apply for an exchange to the Sorbonne and possibly later join my cousin who works for the OECD in Paris. IB Diploma graduate and State Cricketer, Cameron Steel is keen to use his Spanish in his travels through Europe. He will play cricket for Somerset in the UK and will apply to Oxford University to study History. IB and language Cameron Steel and Randolph Dobson. Two of Perth s leading independent schools believe there is than one way to get into university. Both Scotch College and PLC give their the choice of going the traditional route or the globally recognised International Baccalaureate Diploma. Why the choice? PLC Principal Beth Blackwood, says, All have their own unique interests, strengths and aspirations. As educators we want to provide a range of opportunities to assist to achieve their best in their chosen endeavours and to prepare them well for the challenges of a complex, rapidly changing global society. In keeping their philosophy of innovation and choice, the two schools partner together in order to offer the widest possible range of and IB Diploma subjects. PLC student Marissa Loh has just taken on the world - and triumphed. Her amazing IB Diploma result of 44 out of a possible puts her in the top 1 of worldwide. As if that s not achievement enough, she s only 15 years old. You don t need to be a genius to figure out she was the Diploma Dux of School. Eleanor Norman also achieved a very impressive 40, placing her amongst the top 7 of the than who completed the Diploma worldwide. This pair of high achievers knew that as IB Diploma they wouldn t be eligible for WA Curriculum Council awards. It was a small sacrifice however, for an education they thought would be challenging and well rounded. With a maturity way beyond her years Marissa notes, I chose to undertake the IB Diploma because it provides a broad Dr Alec O Connell, Headmaster of Scotch College adds, The shared timetables allow to choose subjects at each College and have proven to be very successful. We are now able to offer an increased choice well beyond what any one school could manage. I am extremely impressed the performance of our and IB. Both the IB Diploma and are recognised by all Australian Universities, however, they differ in how they are assessed. results reflect a student s academic achievement. The IB Diploma reflects an holistic approach to education; are assessed across six subjects in addition to an independent research project, critical thinking skills and a commitment to community service. Both schools believe these skills and perspectives serve well for tertiary studies and future careers. The IB Diploma allows to access direct entry to the world s leading universities and to benchmark their achievements internationally. The IB encourages open-minded, innovative thinking it appears the two schools practise what they preach. PLC girls on top of the world their results Marissa Loh scores in the top 1 of worldwide. Eleanor Norman, well prepared for university thanks to IB Diploma. and holistic education as you have to take a subject from each of the learning areas. You study six subjects and some are studied at a higher level, often equivalent to first year university. While both girls literally have the world at their feet, they are yet to decide if they will leave Perth. Marissa is considering a of options including Medicine/Music at the University of Sydney and Psychology BioMed Science at Edinburgh University. Eleanor is leaning towards Science at Melbourne University. bcells239

These Associations do not support the publication of League Tables. While academic achievement is to be applauded it is but a one-dimensional assessment of a student s total school experience. Even in an academic context, League Tables are limited and superficial measures of excellence, and do not accurately portray levels of improvement and commitment at an individual level. We support the use of data to improve teaching and learning in our schools but we believe strongly that education is also about character, integrity, active citizenship, cultural pursuits and leading a purposeful and rich life. It is this holistic richness of education that we should be celebrating at the culmination of a student s years at school. League Tables have the potential to be divisive in pitting school against school; sector against sector and gender against gender. They compare who have every opportunity for success against those limited access, resources and opportunity. We applaud the commitment, professionalism and dedication of teachers and support staff across all sectors in supporting the achievements of Western Australian. 7 8 HOW YOUR RATES Tables not the only measure This year s comparison tables include new information on taking stage three and vocational certificate II studies Bethany Hiatt Most school principals have a love-hate relationship the annual comparison tables. If their school does well they love to crow about that fact to parents. But if their school takes a tumble down the league table ladder, they may well come under pressure from parents and the school board to make changes to improve the results. The School Curriculum and Standards Authority produces the academic top 50 league table based on the of enrolled in stage three courses who have achieved course scores of above. But if a different measure is applied to create a table such as using a school s Australian Tertiary Admission Rank or highlighting the of to achieve course scores above 65 then schools will appear in a slightly different order. Parents need to take these differences into account when comparing schools based on achievement data. The West Australian tries to strike a balance between giving readers as much detail as possible out overwhelming them facts. This year we have included the proportion of stage three units studied at each school because the of taking courses at that level the most difficult varies considerably between schools. Successful schools no longer measure their achievement based on academic results alone they also provide a rounded education to who have no intention of going on to university study. Ten schools tied for first place on a table ranking schools achievement in vocational education and training last year, based on the proportion of At some schools than 80 per cent of units are taken at stage three; at others it is less than 20 per cent. Generally, when the s of attempting exams increases, the will drop, weighted down by a bigger tail-end of low achievers. Even though most principals will deny it, there are schools where the less academically able are counselled to take mostly stage one courses partly because that means their results will not drag down the school s position on comparison tables. University academics complained publicly early last year that WA s senior school system was not working because too many s were doing courses which failed to prepare them for tertiary study. But, as the former director of Catholic Education Office Ron Dullard pointed out in a subsequent opinion piece, schools do not exist just to fill universities. Many now stay on at school since the leaving age was raised to 17 in 2008 and schools have to cater for their needs also. Vocational education and training certificates are one way to give skills to help them find a job or a path to further study. To complete this year s report card, we have also included a table to show the proportion of from every school to attain a certificate II or higher. Students find their true vocation Training provides great alternative to university education On track: Hedland s Lauren Matthews plans to drive trains. to obtain a certificate II or higher. Hedland Senior made the equal top spot for the first time, all 30 vocational graduating at least one qualification. Principal John Burke said though interest in automotive and hospitality certificates was still high, many had completed a certificate II in sport and recreation. These had helped most of them get jobs at the local aquatic and recreation centres, as well as provide a path to further study. The worked towards their certificates through the Kicking Goals program run by the West Coast Eagles in conjunction Swan Districts Football Club and BHP Billiton. Mr Burke said the dux of the vocational course, Lauren Matthews, had just started her train-driving apprenticeship BHP Billiton Iron Ore. The proportion of Year 11 and 12 taking vocational courses across private and public schools has expanded rapidly in WA from just 3 per cent when they were first introduced in 1997 to about 40 per cent in The majority of who Elated: Bernadette Jones Claire Leete, Sevasti Bairamis and Rowena Barrett. Picture: Astrid Volzke Bullsbrook charges into contention Release of the annual school achievement tables was cause for excitement in Bullsbrook this year, the district high school excelling across several lists. For the first time ever, the outer-metropolitan public school made it on to the top 50 list based on academic achievement, placing 29th. Bullsbrook also featured on a table measuring success in vocational education and training, placing 25th. Team Bullsbrook has kicked a few goals this year, principal Bernadette Jones said. In terms of our presence on the league tables this year, it s really lifted. We re grinning from ear to ear absolute delight. Bullsbrook is considered to be a low socioeconomic area. But Ms Jones said she believed that every child should be able to get the best out of their education, irrespective of their socioeconomic background. Bullsbrook developed a potent combination of employing top teachers and providing a supportive environment balanced setting high expectations for. It doesn t matter what sector you re in, that combination is a recipe for success, she said. complete vocational qualifications attend public schools. Education Department Statewide services assistant executive director Martin Clery said one reason for the big increase in the of opting for VET courses was the raising of the school-leaving age to 17. In recent years, schools had placed emphasis on achieving a qualification of certificate II level or higher, because that provided a stepping stone to further study or meaningful employment. Mr Clery said the benefit of studying a vocational course was that it gave a nationally recognised qualification as well as a set of skills that could help them get a job or link to higher qualifications. Most doing a VET qualification would also complete several WA Certificate of Education courses at stage one or two level. All training qualifications, including those provided in schools, are delivered through registered training organisations which must ensure they meet required standards. The most common certificate II courses offered in schools are in business and information technology. Ms Jones said the benefit of being a school which took from kindergarten to was that they did not have to go through transition points. We re measuring every single child from the minute they enter our school, she said. And we take responsibility for every year of their education. I think it s easier when you re all on one site and you re all on one team. Every year, we try to do better and we casemanage every student. The school had just 43 last year, only about 13 doing courses which made them eligible for university admission. Education Department director-general Sharyn O Neill said making the top 50 was a significant achievement for a school in a semi-rural area. She also commended country high schools in Denmark (th) and Manjimup (th). What that tells us is it doesn t matter where you are in WA, you can get a great education at a public school, at an independent school or a Catholic school and I m so pleased that regional centres once again are doing so well when it comes to academic performance.
