School and college (16-18) Performance tables 2014 South East 38

South East FE38 Local Authorities covered: Surrey West Sussex Introduction These performance tables provide information on the attainment of s of sixth form age in secondary schools and further education sector colleges. They also show how the results compare with other schools and colleges in a local authority area and in England as a whole. All schools and colleges in a local authority area are listed in alphabetical order including: maintained secondary schools; academies; free schools; independent schools; and further education colleges with s aged Special schools that have chosen to be included are also listed, as are any sixth form centres or consortia that operate in an area. The performance tables website contains download data showing the information underlying the performance tables in a spreadsheet format. Additional download data is also available which shows individual and other advanced level qualiication results at subject level for each school and college. This data can be found on the performance tables website under Download Data. The information in these tables only provides part of the picture of the work done in schools and colleges. For example, colleges often provide for a wider range of needs and include adults as well as young people among their s. The tables should be considered alongside other important sources of information such as Ofsted reports, other comparative performance information on further education providers and information from schools and colleges themselves. Ofsted inspection reports can be found on Ofsted s website at organisations/ofsted, or through the performance tables website on the school/college page or direct from the school or college. Schools and colleges should be able to signpost their s to sources of support to assist them when considering their post-16 options. Support is also available from the National areers Service via telephone and webchat at ( or alcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/pages/home. aspx) 1

About the 2014 results Students included in performance tables The tables report the results of year old s advanced level in the 2013/14 year. Students are only included if they are aged 16, 17 or 18 at the start of the 2013/14 year. They will have completed key stage 4 and studied advanced level or qualiications before moving to higher education or employment. In the majority of cases this will be those s two years of advanced level (akin to a traditional sixth form), but may include those s completing in one year or three. The performance indicators are separated into three separate cohorts: ; ; and. The respective measures are based on the number of s within each cohort: cohort includes a that has been for one, and can include s who took other qualiications alongside an. cohort includes a that has been for one A level or an International accalaureate, Pre-U or AQA accalaureate, and can include s who took a qualiication alongside an qualiication. Vocational cohort includes a that has been for one advanced level qualiication. It excludes s who did not take qualiications, but can include s who took qualiications alongside a qualiication. Where a has undertaken a programme with a mix of and qualiications, they will appear in more than one cohort if they meet the relevant criteria. Qualiications reported attainment measures, with the exception of grades AA, include AS results and applied s where they have been achieved alongside qualiications. Academic measures include, AS, International accalaureate, Pre-U, AQA accalaureate, Free Standing Maths Qualiications, Advanced Extension Awards and Extended Projects. The measures report achievements in all advanced level qualiications. A advanced level or qualiication is deined as a qualiication that is the size of an (180 guided learning hours per year), for example a TE Subsidiary Diploma (Level 3). Local and national averages A local authority average is shown for each local authority in England. These averages are based on the results of all state funded schools and further education sector colleges in a local area. Two national averages are shown. One is based on the results of state funded secondary schools and further education sector colleges only. The other includes independent schools as well as state funded secondary schools and further education sector colleges. You may wish to compare the results of individual schools and colleges with the published local and national averages. How the tables were compiled The, and qualiication results were provided by the awarding organisations concerned and then checked, and where appropriate amended by schools and colleges in October Some reviews of the grades requested from awarding organisations by schools and colleges were not completed in time to afect the information included in these tables. It is therefore possible that, for some schools and colleges, the published information would have been diferent had the results of the reviews been available earlier. If you have an interest in a particular institution s results you should check with the school or college. 4

Treatment of different types of schools and colleges Sixth form centres and consortia In some areas, to pool resources and ofer a wider range of post-16 courses to s, schools and colleges collaborate together in a group known as a sixth form centre or consortium. Where schools and colleges are known to be part of a sixth form centre or consortium, a symbol will appear in these tables next to the age range of the school or college. The sixth form centre or consortium will also be named and its results shown separately towards the end of the tables, together with the names of the participating schools and colleges. Special schools Students who need more specialised teaching and facilities may go to special schools. Special schools with sixth form s may choose to have their results included in the performance tables. Some special schools will have no results published for their s because they do not take the qualiications reported in these tables. losed or new schools and colleges Schools and colleges that closed since January 2014 are reported as closed in these tables. Any state funded school or college that opens on or after 12 September 2013 will be published as a new school in these performance tables with no results. Publication of small numbers esults based on a cohort of ive or fewer s are suppressed to reduce the risk of individual s being identiied from published data. Where data is suppressed this is published as. 5

Exam results for s advanced level Examination results reported in the performance tables relect the attainment of s of sixth form age advanced level 3 in the 2013/14 year. esults are only reported if they relate to advanced (level 3) qualiications approved under Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act Further details on approved qualiications can be found on the website We publish two types of attainment measures for s threshold measures and average point score. oth are calculated from s examination results at level 3. All calculations are based on the cumulative achievement of s, usually over two years of. examination gives an indication of the average grade achieved by s at a school or college. The measure is as a point score and the grade equivalent to support interpretation. Further details on the way in which these measures are calculated can be found in Average point scores calculations and Average grade calculations under Methodology and technical guides on the performance tables website. full-time equivalent measures the average size of programme taken by s at a school or college and the average cumulative results achieved. The more qualiications taken by s and the higher the grades, the higher the average point scores per. To recognise s who are undertaking a mix of and qualiications, this measure is calculated using the number of full-time equivalent s in each cohort. Further details on the way in which this measure is calculated can be found in Average point scores calculations under Methodology and technical guides on the performance tables website. For the purposes of calculating the average point scores, advanced qualiications are assigned points based on their broad equivalence with grades. Advanced qualiications are assigned points based on how they broadly compare with grades. A document Point Score Allocations found under Methodology and technical guides on the performance tables website explains the points assigned to diferent qualiication grades. Threshold measures show the proportion of s achieving one, two or three s, or or qualiications. Substantial qualiications are those that are the size of an. Since these measures are reported separately for each qualiication type, a lower proportion of s will achieve these measures if they are taking a mix of and qualiications. As such, the cohort information and average point score per full-time equivalent should be considered alongside these measures. 6

The facilitating subject measure at grades AA is another type of threshold measure relevant to s only. It shows the proportion of s achieving grades AA in two facilitating subjects, providing a measure of excellence in attainment. The facilitating subjects include biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, further mathematics, geography, history, English literature, modern and classical languages. Students who already have a good idea of what they want to at university should check the usual requirements for their chosen course and ensure that their choices at advanced level include any required subjects. Students who are less sure will want to keep their options open while they decide what to do. These s might want to consider choosing two facilitating subjects because they are most commonly required for to degree courses at ussell Group universities. The of s in particular subjects does not, of course, guarantee anyone a place. Entry to university is competitive and achieving good grades is also important. Level 3 value added Value added is a measure of the progress s have made between the different stages of their education in relation to their peers nationally. For level 3 value added, we look at the results achieved by each in advanced level and compare them with the achievements of similar s nationally who, according to their results key stage 4, were of the same level of ability. The value added measures are not included in these tables, however they are published on the performance tables website. To find out more about level 3 value added, including details on how it is calculated, please see the level 3 value added user guide under Methodology and technical guides on the performance tables website. You can ind more information on subject choice and requirements at ussell Group universities at: -choices/ 7

ohort information The cohort information should be considered alongside the other measures, particularly, when interpreting the proportion of s achieving one, two and three /s, and qualiications. The cohort information shows the number of s aged 16-18, who, in 2013/14 year, were: on roll at a school or college key stage 5 (i.e., or ) (International accalaureate, Pre-U, AQA accalaureate, Free Standing Maths Qualiications, Advanced Extension Awards and Extended Projects) The number of full-time equivalent s in each cohort shows the proportion of time a spends on each qualiication type. For example, a undertaking only qualiications will be counted as one full-time equivalent. However, a taking a mix of qualiication types, such as two s and one advanced level qualiication (the same size of two s), will be counted as half of a and half at the end of advanced level. The full-time equivalent cohort igures are used to calculate the average point scores per. This approach ensures that these measures take account of s undertaking a mix of and qualiications. The cohort information also shows the number of full-time equivalent s aged who, in the year 2013/14, were at the end of: advanced level advanced level 8

Other information 2013/14 inance and school workforce Finance and school workforce data for maintained schools that have a sixth form can be found on the performance tables website school page. An explanation of these data can be found in the user guide and resources section in the secondary (key stage 4) tables and also in the primary school (key stage 2) tables (if the school has a primary provision). Spend per pupil and school workforce data has not been published for sixth form colleges or further education colleges. School/college characteristics A school and college s characteristics provide background information on the school or college. These characteristics include the religious denomination of the school, age range of the school or college, gender of including admissions basis for schools. This section also provides details such as the headteacher s, principal s name, address of the institution and telephone number. The characteristics and school and college details is sourced from Eduase: tion.gov.uk/edubase. Ofsted A school or college s Ofsted inspection grade and the most recent Ofsted inspection report can be found on the performance tables website on the school/college page. Further information on Ofsted inspections can be found at 9
