2 Welcome to the fifth annual Voice of the Mountains: El Paso Speech Therapy Conference. It is the conference committee s pleasure to provide a continuing education opportunity that is of high quality, meeting the needs of local Speech Language Pathologists. Regardless of where you work or the clients you serve, we hope you will find this conference as opportunity to gain quality learning. The conference is a joint venture with Education Service Center Region 19, leadership representation from the local area school districts, and the El Paso Speech Hearing Association, and I would like to thank them all for their support. This is a tightly packed two days. We start with our first keynote presentation Understanding Stuttering: Making Sense of a Complicated Condition by J. Scott Yaruss, PhD., CCC-SLP, Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburg. Following the keynote, are four wonderful breakout sessions for you to choose from, each conducted by nationally known presenters. Please join us at lunch for our second keynote presentation Social Thinking, Theory of Mind by Patricia Villarreal, M.S., CCC-SLP of Bilinguistics in Austin, TX. After lunch you will find a series of four more breakout sessions to choose from. Saturday morning you can enjoy choosing from our final four breakout sessions. An optional ethics training will be hosted from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. If you need ethics CEUs this will round out your conference experience at no extra cost. This year s conference has been ASHA approved for 1.0 CEUs, TSHA approved for 10 hours of conference CEUs and 2 hours of Ethics CEUs. Please make sure you sign in each day. Only TSHA can provide partial hours for the conference. Please make sure you visit the Classroom for refreshments during the conference. All refreshments are generously provided by EPSHA. All handouts have been posted at and will remain available for one week post conference. 3 Presenters Mary Ceglio M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd Mary currently works as an Auditory-Verbal Specialist and Speech-Language Pathologist at El Paso Children s Hospital. She is the founder and manager of En Voz Alta, a non-profit organization that supports children with hearing loss and their families in the El Paso community. Mary has over 26 years of experience working with children with special needs, of all ages, in both hospital and school based settings. Cathy Chapman M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd Cathy currently works as a teacher and AV Specialist for the oral program in Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in El Paso ISD. She also is in her 4th year of being director of a summer day camp that specializes in targeting aural/oral activities that target language, speech, and fun for a variety of children with hearing impairments. Cathy has taught in the classroom and worked as an SLP in the school system for 31 years with children with special needs targeting language in a variety of ways. Judith M. Macias-Harris M.S., CCC-SLP/BSLP/CKTI Judith is originally from El Paso, Texas but has been in the Valley since She is a graduate of Arizona State University and the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2013 she started her own private practice, Logopedia Speech Therapy Services. Her purpose is to serve adult and pediatric populations, who are in need of rehabilitative services for TMJ disorder, dysphagia, speech/language/cognitive and vocal deficits, using researched-based therapy objectives. Another area of interest is to contribute to research. She has submitted articles associated with posture and sensory stimulation methods, and has created curriculum (PaSS) to aid with these techniques. She has also developed specific elastic therapeutic taping techniques using Kinesio Tape to improve speech and swallowing function. She recently joined with Pacific Rims Seminars, and is only one of two SLP Certified Kinesio Taping Instructors here in the United States. She recently completed a two-day workshop on elastic therapeutic taping techniques for the SLP in Sao Paulo, Brazil (March 2015).

4 Susan K. Lewis Stokes M.A., CCC-SLP Susan has specialized in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder as both a Speech-Language Pathologist and Autism consultant for over 30 years. She has presented at many state and national workshops and conferences and frequently provides trainings and student support related to all aspects of ASD to various groups and school districts across the country, Canada, and Mexico. Patricia Villarreal M.S., CCC-SLP Patricia is a bilingual Speech-Language-Pathologist who has worked extensively in school settings as well as clinic and home settings, Patricia is also a Texas certified educator in the area of Life Sciences. During her experience as a teacher, Patricia became familiar with the challenges students with communication disorders were faced with in a language-rich academic environment. It is her mission, as a Speech-Language-Pathologist working in the school setting, to collaborate with teachers and other professionals to provide the best education for students with special needs. She has worked in several self-contained units, including PPCD and Life Skills classrooms, with children with a variety of disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Patricia s areas of interest include applying principles of Positive Behavior Support strategies (PBS) and elements of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to support learning and effective communication; she also enjoys creating and using Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) in the classroom to enhance students comprehension and expression of language. Patricia recently authored the book Language Enrichment Strategies for Students in the Life Skills Classroom J. Scott Yaruss PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Yaruss has published over 150 works, including the Overall Assessment of the Speaker s Experience of Stuttering, School-Age Stuttering: A Practical Guide and Minimizing Bullying for Children Who Stutter. He frequently provides workshops that help clinicians improve their treatment of stuttering. Dr. Yaruss has specialized in stuttering for more than 20 years. As a clinician, teacher, and researcher, he strives to share his clinical expertise and current research perspective with Speech-Language Pathologists to help them feel more confident and competent in their skills for helping people who stutter.

Scott Yaruss, PhD, CCC-SLP Stuttering is a complicated condition that can be confusing for speakers, families, and Speech-Language Pathologists alike. In this keynote, the presenter will seek to demystify stuttering so clinicians will feel more confident and competent in working with those who stutter. The presentation will begin with a high-level overview of what stuttering is and what it is not so participants will have the opportunity to re-evaluate some long-held but ultimately inaccurate beliefs about the disorder. The seminar will continue with a review of the World Health Organization s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and an exploration of how the ICF can help clinicians gain a more accurate view of stuttering. The presenter will then apply the ICF to provide a comprehensive view of both assessment and treatment of stuttering across age groups. Clinicians will leave with a better appreciation for what stuttering is, how it can affect people, and, most importantly, how they can help their clients overcome the burden of this challenging disorder. 9:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Break (Snacks Provided) 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Breakout Session One Paso del Norte Rm 1 Preschool Children who Stutter Presenter: J. Scott Yaruss, PhD, CCC-SLP This session will review key aspects of the evaluation and treatment of preschool children who stutter. The session will begin with a brief discussion of the assessment of risk factors and guidelines for recommending treatment, then continue with an overview of treatment approaches that can be implemented to minimize the likelihood that a child will develop persistent stuttering. Specific case examples will be presented, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about children on their caseloads. Paso del Norte Rm 2 Elastic Therapeutic Taping with Kinesio Tape as an Adjunct Modality for Speech and Swallow Presenter: Judith M. Macias-Harris, M.S., CCC-SLP/BSLP/CKTI In this session participants will gain fundamental knowledge of the use of Kinesio Tape as an adjunct modality for the Speech Language Pathologist. The fundamentals of taping methods and basic oropharyngeal taping techniques will be discussed.

6 Paso del Norte Rm 3 Working with Children with Significant Impairments Service Delivery Models and Aligning Speech and Language Goals to the Curriculum Presenter: Patricia Villarreal, M.S., SLP-CCC There are a number of ways we can support students with significant impairments. We can serve them directly in the classroom or outside of the classroom. Individually or with peers, and indirectly, in which we working with people who are regularly in their environment. With respect to goals, aligning speech and language goals to the curriculum and utilizing age-appropriate content can be challenging when working with children with profound disabilities and/ or multiple disabilities. We will discuss the development and use of curriculum-based units for children with multiple disabilities created to bridge the gap between communication levels and academic materials. Horizon Rm Using itechnology as Evidence-Based Practice to Meet the Learning and Behavioral Needs for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder Presenter: Susan K. Lewis Stokes, M.A., CCC-SLP This fast-paced session will give participants information and resources for using ipads, ipods and iphones to meet the learning and behavioral needs of students with ASD, and most importantly, to increase their independent functioning. Evidence-based practice focus areas for this webinar will include using itechnology (apps) for video-modeling, social narratives, visual schedules, visual timers, and visual directions for various tasks and activities. Participants will leave this session with strategies for incorporating previously identified low tech visual supports into high tech itechnology systems, to teach a broad range of skills for students with ASD. 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Paso del Norte Rm 1-3 Lunch (Provided) Social Thinking, Theory of Mind Featured Lunch Keynote: Patricia Villarreal, M.S., SLP-CCC An increasing number of children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder every year. These students have significant deficits in social communication skills. One area in particular that our students with autism struggle with is Theory of Mind, which is the ability to attribute mental states beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge, etc. to oneself and others, and to understand that others have beliefs, desires, intentions, and perspectives that are different from one s own. In this presentation, Patricia will address the deficits of children who have difficulty with perspective taking, the skills required for Theory of Mind, assessment approaches and strategies to provide children with meaningful skills to improve their social interaction. 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Breakout Session Two

7 Paso del Norte Rm 1 Adolescents and Adults who Stutter Presenter: J. Scott Yaruss, PhD, CCC-SLP This session will review key aspects of the evaluation and treatment of adolescents who stutter. Paso del Norte Rm 3 Enriching Speech-Language Skills for Children in Life Skills Programs Presenter: Patricia Villarreal, M.s., CCC-SLP Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) working with children with significant disabilities have the challenging responsibility of teaching their students age-appropriate materials and content regardless of their level of functioning. In this presentation Patricia will address ways to implement physical and lingiuistic modifications to support students significant impairments. The presentation will include videos that model ways to involve all students within large group and small group activities, and individual activities using our curriculum-based Speech-language therapy plans. We will discuss materials modifications as well as ways to involve parents, siblings, teachers and teacher assistants in order to collaborate and promote generalization and carryover outside of the speech-language therapy sessions. The session will begin with a detailed discussion of the overarching goals of treatment, then continue with an overview of specific treatment approaches that can be implemented to enhance communication and reduce adverse impact in school-age children who stutter. Paso del Norte Rm 2 First Comes Listening then Comes Language Presenters: Mary Ceglio, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd Cathy Chapman, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd Can I hear a sound (detection), know what it is not (discrimination), single out what it is (identification), and use that information for something meaningful (comprehension)? This course will discuss the listening hierarchy and share ideas/activities for each area and will also look at managing the hearing device for the hearing impaired child. Paso del Norte Rm 3 Assessment and Treatment with Individuals with VPI Presenter: Patricia Villarreal, M.S., SLP-CCC The process of determining how to improve communication of someone who is not able to build up intraoral pressure can be incredibly intimidating. What do we target? Are there things we can focus on despite structural limitations? How do we know what to target if we don t know the cause of the insufficiency? Do we wait to begin treatment until after surgery is completed? Do we need a medical evaluation before beginning therapy. This course will equip you with tools you need to tackle working with velopharyngeal insufficiency. It includes the reproducible VPI Pyramid which provides a simple framework for evaluation and rapidly creates baseline objectives for therapy.).

9 Horizon Rm Social Communication Needs for Verbal Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Tools for Assessment and Intervention 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Snack Break Presenter: Susan K. Lewis Stokes, M.A., CCC-SLP This session will share functional expressive communication needs for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are extremely verbal yet lack the social communication skills to be successful communicators.
