4 Expert Speaker Series Developing Skills in ABA: Providing Clinical Supervision to Professional and Para-Professional Staff Dustin Polis, Ph.D., BCBA-D Supervisor for Advanced Clinical Services, CCIU November 19, :00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Abstract: Providing effective supervision and feedback is a skill that requires training and practice. This presentation will provide an overview of clinical supervision through a 4-step process. Step 1, the process begins by meeting with staff to identify important skills. Attendees will discuss the skills most critical for staff providing instructional and behavioral services based on ABA. Step 2, a supervisor must determine an effective training curricula and delivery format. Attendees will learn about various models for providing training to staff on the identified topics. Step 3, staff are observed using an observation tool to collect specific data on that skill. Attendees will review various methods for collecting performance data on instructional skills along with writing skills. Step 4, staff are provided feedback on their performance based on the observational data. Attendees will work through various scenarios that may be uncomfortable to provide feedback on. Dustin Polis, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a Doctoral-level Board Certified Behavior Analyst with a Doctorate in School Psychology from Lehigh University. He has almost 20 years of experience working across both approved private schools, residential treatment facilities, and public schools. Dr. Polis work and research focuses on the delivery of educational and behavioral services based on applied behavior analysis from students with significant intellectual disabilities to students with significant mental health issues. Dr. Polis is an adjunct professor at Arcadia University and teaches courses within the BCBA course sequence. He has been the chair of the Bucks County Autism Association s annual autism conference for the past 8 years. Currently, he serves as the Supervisor for Advanced Clinical Services through the CCIU where he is responsible for developing innovative, evidence-based programs to address the needs of students within their schools. 5 Expert Speaker Series System-wide Functional Analysis of Organizational Performance Donald Hantula, Ph.D. Director, Decision Lab, Department of Psychology, Temple University February 4, :00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Abstract: Congratulations. You have just been promoted to a supervisor or manager. Now what? Before running to embrace the latest recycled management fad, take a look at how behavior analytic theory and functional analysis skills form a foundation for excellent supervisory skills that will boost work performance and job satisfaction. This presentation reviews the basics of behavioral systems analysis and individual performance analysis and highlights recent research in organizational behavior management. Donald Hantula, Ph.D. (University of Notre Dame) is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Decision Laboratory at Temple University, Associate Editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management and Editor of The Behavior Analyst. His research includes behavior analysis, behavioral economics, human decision making in dynamic environments and technological applications. He has previously held positions as Visiting Scientist and Program Director for Decision, Risk, and Management Sciences at the National Science Foundation, in Occupational Health Promotion (Johns Hopkins Med School), Human Resource Management (King s College) and Management Information Systems (St. Joseph s University) and visiting scholar at University of Nevada Reno. His research has appeared in American Psychologist, IEEE Transactions, JABA, JOBM, JAP, OB&HDP and his most recent book is Consumer Behavior Analysis: (A) Rational Approach to Consumer Choice (with Victoria Wells). 6 Expert Speaker Series Considerations in the Treatment of Feeding Problems in Individuals with Autism: What We ve Done and What We Need to Do Jennifer Dawson, Ph.D., BCBA, BS-L (PA) Clinical Director, Southeastern Pennsylvania Autism Resource Center (SPARC) March 10, :00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Abstract: : Feeding Disorders are difficult and seem to go hand in hand with autism. At one point, evidence of disordered eating was considered a mandatory diagnostic criterion for autism. There are many reasons why disordered eating and autism are linked and the behavioral literature provides strong evidence for the use of a functional based approach to the treatment of feeding disorders. However, less emphasized in the literature are four considerations when treating feeding disorders in individuals with autism: (1) medical concerns and skill deficits, (2) specialized diets promoted for individuals with autism, (3) age of individuals with autism when present for treatment of a feeding disorder, and (4) successful generalization and maintenance of feeding treatments and gains outside of the clinic setting. Given the high prevalence of Feeding Disorders in Individuals with autism, a closer look and understanding of these considerations is necessary to continue building long term effective solutions to these feeding problems. Jennifer Dawson, Ph.D., BCBA, BS-L (PA) is the Clinical Director of SPARC, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Autism Resource Center. Dr. Dawson is a licensed clinical psychologist and a board certified behavior analyst. She is an adjunct professor in the Psychology Department at West Chester University. Her areas of specialization include feeding disorders, autism spectrum disorders, parent training, treatment acceptability, and applied behavior analysis. Dr. Dawson has been working with individuals with feeding disorders and difficulties for 20 years. Prior to opening SPARC almost ten years ago, Dr. Dawson worked as a Psychologist at the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and as Faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. 7 Expert Speaker Series ABA-SLP Collaboration Lori Frost, MC, CCC-SLP Co-Founder, Pyramid Educational Consultants, Inc. April 14, :00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. Abstract: Applied Behavior Analysis is the practice of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree. It is an evidence-based treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and related disorders. Treatment goals for speech-language pathologists and behavior analysts often overlap, so collaboration between the two disciplines optimizes treatment outcomes. This presentation will provide an overview of the fields of applied behavior analysis and speech language pathology and how professionals from both can join forces for optimal student outcome. Lori Frost, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech/language pathologist and co-founder of Pyramid Educational Consultants, Inc. She is co-author of the PECS Training Manual, 2nd Edition, A Picture s Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism, 2nd Edition and Autism 24/7. Lori has taught international workshops and graduate courses on Communication Intervention in ASD, PECS, Verbal Behavior and Functional Communication Training and consults to schools and families to create effective and functional communication training protocols. She is co-creator of PECS, a unique system that allows learners with limited communication abilities to initiate communication with teachers, parents, and peers. Page 7
