These are accredited by the Australian College of Health Service Executives, and are designed to meet the needs of students in a changing health care environment. Professor Duncan Boldy, Department of Health Policy and Management would like to bring to your attention, in particular, to the new 1998, fast track Master of Health Services Management Program, which only takes the equivalent of three semesters full time study. Please also note that a Graduate Certificate in Health Policy and Management is available for non-graduates with relevant education and work experience and successful students can apply for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration, leading to the Master of Health Services Management. Curtin also offers a more research focused Master of Health Administration and doctoral studies are also available. Entry level is dependent on qualifications and experience. 3 Overview The Department of Health Policy and Management offers programs in health service management designed to meet the different learning needs of students. Non-graduates with relevant educational and work experience backgrounds, can apply to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Health Policy and Management, which takes the equivalent of one semester full time and consists of four units. Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate are eligible to apply to enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma or Master courses. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration consists of eight units. A basic qualification at degree level or its equivalent, preferably with relevant work experience is required for admission to this program. Those students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate will need to complete another four units to meet the requirements for the Post Graduate Diploma. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration can also be considered as the equivalent of one year full time of the masters program. The Master of Health Services Management requires the equivalent of three semesters full time study. The Master of Health Administration, which is more research focused, requires the equivalent of two years (four semesters) of full time study. Students may enter at any level, dependent on qualifications and experience. See attached for further details of each program. 5 Graduate Certificate in Health Policy and Management (Code ) Introduction The Graduate Certificate program provides a foundation in key disciplines which constitute the area of health policy and management for students without such a background. It is suitable for experienced health service personnel from a variety of settings who desire to expand their knowledge of policy and management issues within the context of health care provision. This includes those whose career is shifting from a professional or technical area to a management role. It may also suit some individuals from other areas who desire to work in health care management or those from overseas wishing to study this area. Duration, Mode of Study and Availability The duration of the course is one semester or part-time equivalent. Students undertake a total of four units, each lasting one semester. These units are available both internally and externally. Entrance Requirements Applicants will normally be graduates with approved health science degrees although graduates from other backgrounds will also be considered, as will non-graduates who have relevant educational and work experience backgrounds. Course Structure Students undertake a total of four units from the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration. These are selected from the following, in consultation with the course controller:- Available First Semester Health Research Methods Health Care Systems Health Services Management 584 Option Unit Available Second Semester Health Economics Health Planning and Evaluation Health Services Law and Ethics 584 Option Unit

Some students may be able or required to undertake alternative units depending on their previous education and experience, at the discretion of the course controller. On the successful completion of this course, a student may be permitted to continue with further study and have the completed units credited towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration.

7 Post graduate Diploma in Health Administration (Code ) Introduction The Post Graduate Diploma program provides a broad understanding of the concepts of management. It is suitable for experienced health service personnel from a variety of settings who desire to expand their knowledge of policy and management issues within the context of health care provision. This includes those whose career is shifting from a professional or technical area to a management role. It may also suit some individuals from other areas who desire to work in health care management or those from overseas wishing to study this area. Duration, Mode of Study and Availability The duration of the course is two semesters or part-time equivalent. Students undertake a total of eight units, each lasting one semester. These units are available both internally and externally. Entrance Requirements Applicants will normally be graduates with approved health science degrees although graduates from other backgrounds will also be considered. Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Health Policy and Management will be eligible to apply and have the completed units credited. 9 Master of Health Services Management (Code ) Introduction The Master of Health Service Management course further develops the ability to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate systems of health care delivery. It is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to uphold senior management, administrative and planning positions within health service institutions. The course is aimed at both health professionals wishing to acquire management skills and non health professionals who intend to seek a career in health services management. Duration, Mode of Study and Availability The duration of the course is three university semesters or part-time equivalent. Entrance Requirements Applicants will normally be graduates with approved health science degrees although graduates from other backgrounds will also be considered. Students who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration will be eligible to apply and have the completed units credited. Intermediate Award A student who has successfully completed all the requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration may apply for graduation in that award,subject to approval of the Head of School. 11 Master of Health Administration (Code72-956T) Thesis or (Code72-956C) Coursework Introduction The Master of Health Administration course further develops the ability to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate systems of health care delivery. It is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to uphold senior management, administrative and planning positions within health service institutions. The course has a strong emphasis on research methods and their application and will prepare students for doctoral studies. Duration, Mode of Study and Availability The duration of the course is two years or part-time equivalent study. The first year of study is usually the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration or its equivalent, following which students may apply to enter the masters program. Students accepted directly into the masters program complete appropriate additional units to those for the Postgraduate Diploma and select one of two study options, research and thesis or coursework and project. Students who enrol in the thesis option will be required to conduct applied research and submit a thesis. The coursework option allows the student to complete further units at a postgraduate level, whilst the research component involves the completion of a project and the submission of a report. Entrance Requirements Applicants will normally have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Administration or an equivalent qualification. There is a further requirement that the student demonstrate evidence of high academic performance and an adequate background in research methodology.
