6 FOREWORD This publication is provided by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada s Lower Mainland Chapter. This guide provides Chapter members and Lower Mainland residents with a list of free and low cost counselling options available in Metro Vancouver. All opportunities are located within the Lower Mainland. The purpose of this publication is to increase access to counselling services in the community to people affected by MS. There are times when the challenges of MS can lead to isolation, anxiety and depression. Through counselling, you can explore your alternatives, build on your strengths and develop new skills. For those affected by MS, counselling can: build practical suggestions and strategies, which can help you better understand and cope with your illness and plan for the future help you discuss personal circumstances and feelings that you might be experiencing improve communication and enhance relationships help you learn about resources and community services, such as support groups allow for more personal growth and satisfaction out of life This publication comprises a wide variety of free and low-cost counselling services for everyone. While not every counselling service will be suitable for you, we hope you come across opportunities that will allow you to work through your issues so that you can achieve greater happiness. 6

View the Table of Contents for a full overview of the listings in this publication. The organization of this guide is as follows: Each community/section is designated a letter. For example, Vancouver is letter A, and Richmond is letter D. Each counselling service listing falls under the letter of their community, and is designated a number. For example, the second listing in Vancouver is A- 2. In addition, while this guide aims to be comprehensive, it is not exhaustive and should not be considered as such. Some of the individuals identified in this document have approached the MS Society in order to share information and services in their area of professional practice. Some may have a past history and knowledge of working with individuals with MS, while others may not. The MS Society does not endorse the services any of these individuals, but wishes to pass along this information for your consideration. 8

Broadway Tel: Hours: Monday- Friday, 9:00 AM 9:00 PM Cost: Sliding fee scale available, will be determined in the intake session Lowest rate is $35 for individual counselling given to individuals on disability or who work less than 6 hours per week Regular fee is $50 per session for Individual Counselling & $70 per session for Couples and Family Counselling Web: Counsellors are trained at the Master s Degree level and are currently completing their internships to become registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and/or the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. They provide services for a variety of concerns including depression, family conflict, grief and loss, life transitions, marital and relationship issues, terminal illness, and work/career problems. She specializes in using psychotherapy to assist people to find their strengths and to boost 9

10 self-esteem so that they move forward with confidence. She provides counselling for individuals, couples, and families in Vancouver and Burnaby with a variety of concerns including anxiety & panic, shyness & social anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship problems, substance abuse & addictions, grief due to loss, divorce, or separation, and eating disorders. A-3 Bounce Back: Reclaim Your Health Telephone: Referral: Referral from your primary health care provider is required for the telephone coaching component. Cost: Free. Web: Bounce Back is an evidence-based program designed to help adults experiencing symptoms of mild to moderate depression, low mood, or stress, with or without anxiety. It s specially designed for people with milder mental health troubles that get in the way of life. The program is led by the BC Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and funded by the BC Ministry of Health. Bounce Back offers two forms of help. The first is a DVD video (available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese) providing practical tips on how to recognize and deal with depressive symptoms. The second service is workbook-based with telephone coaching (available in English, French and Cantonese). Bounce Back community coaches assist in the teaching of problem-solving and other skills to overcome difficulties such as inactivity, unhelpful thinking, worry, and avoidance. Access to the coaching component requires a doctor's referral. 11 Web : Free community based counseling run through City University. The clinic is run by the City University and the service is provided by interns from the Master of Counseling program. However, they would refer clients to appropriate counseling services when client needs exceed interns' competency. Depending on the availability of interns, they can work with non-english speaking clients as well. Web: Individual, couples, and family counselling is offered for clients of all ages and genders. Common Counselling issues addressed include life & transitions, family & relationships, gender-orientations-sexuality, trauma, physical health, and emotional well-being. Counselling is available in English, Spanish, Farsi, and Cantonese. Dragonstone also offers telephone and Skype counselling for people who are not able to physically access the centre, either due to long distance or because the facility is not accessible for individuals with mobility aids. A-6 Family Services of Greater Vancouver Address: East Broadway, Vancouver, BC (as of August 21 st 2014) Tel: ext. 119 (intake line) info@jfsa.ca Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00am 12:00pm & 1:00-4:00pm (intake line) Wait Time: There is a 2-3 month wait time for the subsidized program. Cost: Sliding scale fees for those who qualify ranging from $15-$75, regular counselling fees $75- $120 Web : 11

12 Community based, not for profit organization providing social services to children, youth, adults, and families across the Lower Mainland. When you call to request counselling services an intake counsellor will spend time assessing your situation in order to connect you with the service that is right for you. Their counselling team is comprised of professionally trained therapists/counsellors with graduate degrees in clinical social work and counselling psychology. Their program is designed to ensure that everyone who needs counselling, gets counselling. Services are offered in English, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish. The goal of their counselling team is to establish warm, compassionate, and therapeutic relationships in which the client s experience is understood, respected, and validated. They work with a wide range of problems, which may be anything that stands between you and the goals, priorities, and commitments of your life. Counselling is available in English, Hebrew, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Farsi, and Urdu. 12

13 A-8 Jewish Family Counselling Services Address: 1985 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC Tel: Hours: Hours are variable; therapists work both morning and early evening to 7pm Referral: No referral is necessary Cost: Lowest fee on their sliding scale is $50, regular fee is $105/session Web: JFSA s Counselling Department provides therapy services through the West Coast Wellness Group. Their staff is made up of well qualified registered therapists with degrees in counselling, social work and related disciplines. They offer individual, couples, family and group therapy. They offer services to the Jewish and non-jewish community. A-9 Little Mountain Neighbourhood House s Family Support Program Address: 3981 Main Street Tel: Hours: Starting up again September 2014 Referral: Services will be provided by appointment basis only, the referral will be passed along to the practicum student/student counselor who will contact you when a space becomes available. Cost: FREE! Web: Free counselling services are offered to youth, adults, and seniors. This service is provided by a student who is currently completing their Masters of Counseling Psychology degree. The program is equipped to support individuals who are experiencing difficulties with family dynamics and relationships, marital or relationship problems, life transitions, grief and loss, stress management, emotional regulation and low self-esteem and confidence A-10 Living Systems Counselling Vancouver Tel: ext. 0 info@livingsystems.ca 13

They offer counselling for a variety of reasons such as depression, anxiety, marital issues, relationship problems, addictions, career issues, grief, aging, spiritual or religious concerns, and anger. They also offer Play Therapy to help parents in their relationships with their children. Counsellors base their practice in Bowen Theory, which views the family as a living system where individual members and the group as a whole influence one another s functioning in many complex ways. Their main office is in North Vancouver, but there are locations in West Vancouver, New Westminster, East Vancouver, Downtown, Westside, Surrey and South Vancouver. A-11 Living Through Loss Counselling Society of BC Address: Commercial Drive, Vancouver, BC Tel: Fax: ltlc@shaw.ca Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Evening appointments available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Referral: Take appointments by self-referral, by professional and by anyone who would like to receive grief and loss counseling. Wait Time: Wait time for appointments is from 1 week to 10 days. Cost: $95 per hour. A limited fund from the Provincial Government offers 4 appointments at a minimum of $25/hour to those on disability or social services. Web: 14

15 LTC is a not-for-profit organization that provides professional individual and group counselling to adults, children and adolescents experiencing loss or life changes such as chronic illness. Their staff consists of Registered Clinical Counsellors and Registered Social Workers who are certified grief counsellors with a wide range of experience in helping others. The model used by the agency is Reality Therapy, which is proven effective to assist in regaining control while you deal with traumatic life changes. Individual and group counselling are offered. A-12 My Therapy Online Tel: lorraine.irlam@gmail.com Cost: $85.00 per session, there are a limited number of spaces for people who require a reduced sliding scale fee Web: Lorraine Irlam offers online counselling from the comfort and convenience of your own home from anywhere in BC. She specializes in supporting people with chronic illness, pain and other disabilities, as well as many other life challenges, through online therapy. Using secure, encryption technology, online counselling is more financially and physically accessible, great for people with chronic illness, pain or other disabilities or living in small communities. A-13 Oak Counseling Address: 949 West 49 th (Oak), Vancouver, BC Tel: Fax: Hours: 9:30 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Thursday; 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM Fridays info@oakcounselling.org Cost: Offers a sliding scale fee from $10 to $65 related to household income and the number of individuals supported on it. Cases can be looked at individually, to determine if temporary relief of session fees can be provided in exceptional circumstance. Web: Counselling services are provided voluntarily by counsellors with a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Social work or a related discipline. They offer services to individuals, couples and families that are experiencing any of the following: life crisis, 15

16 depression, grief, marital conflict, parenting difficulties, and uncertainty about life goals. They also offer multicultural and multilingual counselling services related to relocation, immigration difficulties, and loneliness. A-14 Psychotherapy Vancouver Address: W. Pender St Tel: Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11:00am-8:00pm & Saturday 10:00am- 1:00pm Cost: Individual therapy with intern completing a Masters: $50 Individual therapy with a RCC: $120 Couples therapy: $130 Web: Turning Point Therapy is able to offer low cost counselling through the intern program. Interns are available to see individuals who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship issues, and the effects of childhood trauma and abuse. Interns are supervised by a Registered Clinical Counsellor. A-15 Stewart and Associates Address: , Homer Street, Vancouver, BC Tel: Fax: admin@stewart-assoc.com Hours: 10 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Saturday Cost: Regular session fee is $120, but they offer a sliding scale fee down to $60 for counseling services done by fully qualified therapists. When an intern is available a lower rate may be offered if client is low income. Web: A variety of services are offered including: Individual, Couple, Family, and Group Counselling. Also available are Wellness Workshops and Specialized Art/Play/Sex Therapy. Counsellors provide services for personal growth, anxiety & stress, survivors of abuse, gay and lesbian issues, chronic and debilitating illness, and loss & grief. The help lines promote the well-being of Chinese Canadians who are experiencing difficulties accessing social services because of language and cultural barriers, and/or fear of social stigma. Operating hours are 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. You can reach the Cantonese Help Line at and the Mandarin Help Line at Individual and Family Counselling is provided by counsellors with graduate degrees in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or related disciplines and are registered with various professional associations. They provide services for many issues including stress management, identity issues, loss and grief, adjustment difficulties, workplace issues, difficulties in relationships and parenting. Counselling Psychology Master s students in training at the UBC Education & Counselling Psychology and Special Education program offer help with stress management (work, home, school stress), anxiety, depression, school and relationship issues. They see adults, students and children over 10. A registered psychologist is on-site to supervise the counsellors. 17

Cost: Fees will be assigned based on your gross annual household income. Sliding scale fee ranging from $10-40/hour for treatment services & $120-$489 for one-time assessment fee Web: Direct services are provided by graduate students from UBC s doctoral program in clinical psychology. Student clinicians are closely supervised by Registered Psychologists from their faculty and the community. They offer comprehensive psychological services for children, adolescents, adults, and families in the Greater Vancouver community. Psychological assessments are available as well as psychotherapy for a variety of difficulties including anxiety disorders, depression, adjustment difficulties, life stress, and relationship difficulties. A-19 Vancouver Christian Counselling Centre Society Address: 969 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC Tel: Hours: Counseling hours are flexible, appointments can be made in the evening as well as during regular business hours.. Cost: Sliding scale fee, starting from $50 to $150. Web: Counsellors provide individual, couples, family, and transitions counselling services. People of any religious or cultural background are welcomed, but the counsellors at VCCC are Christians and can incorporate Christian spirituality into your counselling sessions, if you desire. Their staff consists of professionally trained and experienced therapists, including registered psychologists, social workers and family therapists. Counselling can be conducted in English, German, Cantonese, and Mandarin. 18

They offer child and youth mental health counselling, family counselling, a high-risk youth program, sexual abuse counselling, sexual health intervention program, and trauma counselling. Burnaby office is wheelchair accessible. B-2 Cameray Counselling Associates Address: Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC Tel: associates@cameray.ca Hours: Flexible hours Cost: They offer a sliding scale fee of $80 that can be discussed on a case-bycase basis. Regular fee for individual session= $110 & for Couple/Family session= $120 Web: Cameray Associates specialize in a variety of counselling needs. They work with adults, couples, children and families. Clients can seek their services for anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, relationship problems, transition and adjustment issues, grief/loss, and parenting. 19

As people develop awareness regarding the internal conflict and the various 20

21 "parts" of self, they are able to see their life circumstances with greater clarity and ultimately make clear choices with consciousness and intention. Individual therapy, couples/relational therapy and group therapy are available. Group therapy is 1/3 of the cost of an individual therapy hour. Offices are also available in Squamish and Vancouver. Therapy is offered year-round but they are not always taking new clients. They take the majority of the new clients at the beginning of the semester (Jan, May, Sept). Cost: Sliding scale fee for individual treatment $10 to $40 & couples/family treatment $15- $60 Web: Serves as an outpatient mental health clinic and training centre associated with the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Master and Doctoral students in the Clinical Psychology Program provide services and are supervised by clinical faculty. 21
