29 Water conservation Problem Statement Solution Benefits Airbus Helicopters has a history of outstanding environmental compliance. Maintaining compliance today requires strict tracking of possible air and waterborne effluents emanating from the workspace. To support Airbus Helicopters Inc Environmental policy commitments Airbus Helicopters site in Grand Prairie, Texas identified irrigation water use on their 20 acres of lawn as a concern in To reduce the water use of the site water conservation project was put in place. Water conservation approach based on: - relandscaping with drought tolerant plants and grasses; - installing a new computer based irrigation controller; - conducting a comprehensive evaluation of each irrigation zone; - additional water conservation efforts such as waterless urinals and removal of landscaped flower beds during winter months. Jeff Ryan, Director of the facilities said, We are very pleased with the positive results. We hope our success will inspire others to use water more thoughtfully and productively to help keep our rivers and streams healthy. - Reduced Water Use - Conserves 17,140 M3 Water Annually - Reduces Carbon Footprint by MTCO2e annually In 2013, 4.5 million gallons of water were saved. 31 BLUE5 - A roadmap for success Problem Statement As for all major industry players today the topic of eco-efficiency is high on our agenda. Being a top performing enterprise implies profitable growth, value creation, matching industry benchmarks and above all competitive products and services. To improve its overall environmental performance, Airbus has put an emphasis on maximising the use of eco-efficient technologies and processes at the company s production sites around the globe. To manage this effort, Airbus launched Blue5, which draws the roadmap for reducing the environmental footprint of Airbus manufacturing activities. Solution In 2011, Blue5 was launched to progressively deploy a global and coordinated footprint reduction plan with consolidated roadmaps for the five areas of environmental focus for sustainable manufacturing and covers all Airbus sites and functions in Europe. The Blue5 organization coordinates the global roadmap for the environmental industrial footprint reduction and the functions and sites deploy these roadmaps. 32 SWIFT Problem Statement Structured What If Tool (SWIFT) for Environmental Permits/Regulations mitigates risk of regulatory misses Identifies the internal compliance process for each substantive term and condition of a permit and regulation: Monitoring Recordkeeping Reporting Work practices Air emission limitations Water discharge limitations Stack testing and/or media sampling Benefits of the SWIFT Process Must read the permit or authorization Must reassess what regulations apply to the Site Organize all applicable requirements in one document that can then be sorted by source, area of the plant, regulation, and/or permit Becomes basis for affected employees recurring awareness training Becomes basis for reasonable inquiry Benefits of a Completed SWIFT Living document Update when compliance processes are updated by team; permit is modified, renewed, or new; regulations modified or new; and management of change impacts one or more of the line items. How will reasonable inquiry look? How will the Business-level compliance assurance program audit the Site in the future? What does Permit Day look like in the future? What does Environmental Awareness Day/Week look like in the future? Who? Where? When? How? Verify? Emission Unit Requirement Type Permit Requirement Who Will Do This Task? (e.g., maintenance supervisor, furnace operator)? Where Will the Task Be Done? (e.g., on top of Bldg 3) When Will This Task Be Done? (e.g., first shift) How Will This Task Be Done? (e.g., fill out logsheet, Input to computer, download from process) Verification (how will we know if the task was not done (in time to prevent a violation)?) What If? (i.e., potential problems -- what might go wrong with the approach that could cause a permit violation?) Back-Up Plan (i.e., how will requirement be met if the potential problem occurs?) Recommended Changes to Approach (to address identified problems) Action(s) Needed to Achieve Complete Monioring, Recordkeeping, Reporting for Emission Unit/Permit Requirement (e.g., develop form, train personnel) Actions Implemented? 35 Find It Fix It! Problem Statement Background: Across the company we have targets to reduce energy and waste to support our environmental policy commitments As a part of delivering these we recognise the benefit of involving our employees with simple ways to help That s why we re rolling out the Find It Fix It (FIFI) campaign The aim is to make it simple for employees to register any opportunity that they spot to save energy usage and waste generation We ll also share solutions across our businesses where appropriate to maximise the benefits This is a part of our strategy to do more using less. Solution At key locations around our sites we provide find it fix it labels. These are completed when an employee finds an energy use or waste issue which they cannot directly deal with eg. air leak or coolant leak. The process is as follows; Write out the label and attach it to the issue (where possible) using the glue strip on the label Contact 123 from any internal phone in Rolls-Royce and report your issue Record the reference number given to you on the find it fix it label An engineer will attend and assess your find and, if possible, fix immediately or arrange a fix for a later date When fixed, the tag will be removed by the engineer Benefits Waste and cost reduction benefits: Reduced usage of resources Reduced cost Improved health & safety Wider business benefits: Employees motivated to take part in environmental improvement programmes Contacts for more information Nigel Marsh Global Head of Environment, RR nigel.marsh@rolls-royce.com Matthew Payne Environment Manager, RR matthew.payne@rolls-royce.com 34

36 Rethinking Waste Problem Statement Background: Across the company we have targets to reduce waste to support our environmental policy commitments As a part of delivering these we recognise the benefit of involving our employees with simple ways to help Whilst we focus much on our key waste streams, there are also other areas in which we can reduce waste and engage our employees As a part of our on-site catering service we use a lot of single use cups that we then have to pay to have removed as waste The waste is bulky to handle and time consuming to collect We needed a better way forward Solution Doing more with less At key locations around our sites we launched a Keep Cup reusable cup campaign This involved providing 5000 free cups to employees to use for their daily beverages As an incentive employees get a reduction in the price of purchased drinks for using the Keep Cup Further incentives are being provided to sustain improvement This is also a part of our drive to encourage the right behaviours in our employees As a result of this campaign we have already seen a reduction of more than 25% in the use of disposable cups Benefits Waste and cost reduction benefits: Reduced usage of resources Reduced cost Wider business benefits: Employees motivated to take part in environmental improvement programmes Contacts for more information Nigel Marsh Global Head of Environment, Rolls-Royce nigel.marsh@rolls-royce.com Matthew Payne Environment Manager, Rolls-Royce matthew.payne@rolls-royce.com 35

37 BAE Systems: Case Study, NEU-TRI E Trichloroethylene: The approved grade. Problem Statement Trichloroethylene had been used at BAE Systems Samlesbury (UK) since the early 1980 s for degreasing aircraft components. In order to improve quality, sustainability and safety of the cleaning process, the company looked for an alternative cleaning agent. Pretty much all options had been investigated during a period of nearly four years, but none could offer advantages similar to those of NEU-TRI E Trichloroethylene offered by SAFECHEM Europe GmbH. BAE Systems is the second largest global defense company and a security enterprise with approximately 100,000 employees worldwide. At the site in Samlesbury (UK), BAE Systems provides manufacturing and support capabilities to a number of internationally important aircraft programmes including Eurofi ghter Typhoon and F35-Lightning II in addition to work on unmanned air vehicle demonstrators. The site has a history of forming and fabricating aluminium components for a range of civilian and military aircrafts. Concerned about the high consumption of the chemical and the VOC emissions caused by the cleaning process, the company wanted to look for alternatives. It also wanted to increase quality, performance and EH&S (Environment, Health & Safety). During a period of nearly four years the company investigated all possible options. These included water-based cleaning agents and other solvents such as hydrocarbons and n-propyl Bromide (npb). Solution Installing a remarkably high quality cleaning solution BAE Systems found from its testings that NEU-TRI E SAFE-TAINER System from SAFECHEM Europe GmbH (SAFECHEM), a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) was capable of reliably removing all the contaminations which occur through the process. This resulted in an approval for NEU-TRI E Trichloroethylene by BAE Systems. The chlorinated solvent is used in a modern, closed cleaning facility which operates under vacuum. It is designed to clean 12 aluminium sheets of 2,000 x 2,600 mm or a mass of 700 kg in one cycle. With this capacity the new degreaser is one of the largest machines of its kind in Europe, and potentially the world. The SAFE-TAINER closed-loop transfer system, state-of-the-art delivery and handling system for solvents, consists of two separate, specially designed containers, one for fresh and one for used solvent. Each container is delivered with a standard drum inside. The steel container protects the drum, preventing damage or spills.. The MAXICHECK Test Kit and business logbook can enable the operator to check the alkalinity level and the acid acceptance of the solvent regularly in an easy and quick manner and plot the results. If necessary, MAXISTAB Stabiliser can be added to keep stabiliser concentration at the optimum level. Benefits In combination with the new cleaning plant the SAFE- TAINER closed-loop transfer system can enable an emission-free cleaning process. The SAFE-TAINER Systems are easy to handle and to store and help allow a safe management of chlorinated solvents on site. During the solvent transfer to the cleaning machine a special leak-free, dry-break coupling prevents spills and vapour emissions. When transferring used solvent from the cleaning machine to the SAFE-TAINER container, a dry-break coupling adapter and a vapour return connection prevent emissions. This protects the operator and environment from potential contact with the solvent. NEU-TRI E was capable of reliably removing all the contaminations which occur through the use of up to 16 different oils and greases during the manufacturing process thereby ensuring the quality needed. This offers not only a maximum cleaning quality, it also helps BAE Systems to protect their cleaning facility against acidification and corrosion and minimise solvent usage by means of an extended life-span. It has generated impressive results Since the newly purchased cleaning system and NEU-TRI E Trichloroethylene have been in use the consumption has dropped from around 5 tons per annum to less than half a ton The system meets all specifications of the Solvent Emissions Directive (SED). BAE Systems has achieved a high performance and minimised risk to operators and the working environment. 38 HS Marston: Case Study. Better Cleaning Quality While Lowering Costs Problem Statement Intensive re-work, high costs as well as health, safety and environmental issues were reasons that the UK-based HS Marston Aerospace Limited, a UTC Aerospace Systems company, took an indepth look at their cleaning process for heat exchanger components. Parts cleaning a quality-critical step in manufacturing The core competence of the HS Marston site is the development and manufacture of a wide range of heat transfer and fluid management products and services for the commercial and military aerospace markets, motorsport and electronics industries. Cleaning of heat exchanger components is a quality-critical process step. The complex geometries make it difficult to get these parts clean and dry which is necessary for the subsequent brazing. Here, even very tiny residues cause failures which can lead to leakage. With chlorinated solvents, which were used for many years in open top cleaning equipment, the company had achieved satisfactory results. More stringent requirements regarding health, safety and environment (HS&E) led to the decision to replace this cleaning process. The first considered option was a water based system. However, due to staining on parts surfaces andinsufficient drying, aqueous cleaning systems could not be implemented. The company switched to another solvent, this time an npb-based cleaning media but had major problems to keep the solvent stable against built-up acidity. The company changed to a hydrofluorcarbon (HFC). But even with this solvent could not achieve the required cleaning quality reproducibly. Additionally, annual spend on solvent was extremely high. Solution The company has optimised parts cleaning through the use of modified alcohol solvent and COMPLEASE, the chemical leasing model from SAFECHEM. Modified alcohol solvents best individual solution DOWCLENE 1601 is a distillable solvent based on modified alcohols and has a wide range of approvals in the aerospace industry (e.g. Rolls Royce). DOWCLENE 1601 is used at HS Marston in combination with a new, completely sealed machine from Pero AG, equipped with an integrated distillation unit. Supply and take-back for an environmentally responsible disposal of the solvent take place in the SAFE-TAINER System, developed by SAFECHEM. This system for transport, storage and handling, consists of two different, specially designed double-walled containers for fresh and used solvents. Convincing advantages provided by COMPLEASE Chemical Leasing COMPLEASE, the chemical leasing concept from SAFECHEM has also proven as an ideal solution for HS Marston. The customised leasing package not only includes the supply of fresh solvent and take-back of used solvent, but also consultancy, support and various services on a continuous basis. Among these is the CHEMAWARE Solvent Training for all employees involved in the cleaning process which is performed once a year. Staff members are trained on the safe handling of DOWCLENE 1601 as well as on optimising the process by monitoring the solvent stability and quality with the MAXICHECK DCL-1N Test Kit. Benefits Successful halogenated solvent substitution Thanks to its lipophilic and hydrophilic properties, DOWCLENE 1601 enables the removal of oils and greases as well as the elimination of polar contaminations like cooling emulsions or solids such as salt, particles and abrasives, in a reliable and reproducible manner. Extensive cleaning tests showed that this also applies for difficult to remove contamination from the heat exchanger components of HS Marston. The solvent is also characterised by low toxicity and good biodegradability. Due to its specific properties the solvent enables us to meet the high demands on cleaning quality whilst ensuring that the corporate requirements concerning HS&E are achieved. For this application DOWCLENE 1601 has proven to be the best cleaning solution and an ideal alternative to all halogenated solvents. Technological improvement Operation under vacuum offers process-related advantages such as better drying and lower stress on the solvent. Cleaning process and the continuous distillation are fully automated. In combination with the new cleaning machine the SAFE-TAINER closedloop transfer system represents the Best Available Technology (BAT) and enables a virtually emission-free cleaning process. Finally, the continuous recycling of DOWCLENE 1601 reduced consumption. EH&S and financial benefits significantly Additionally, cleaning costs could be significantly reduced and the HS&E goals have also been achieved. These advantages have triggered a huge interest on the cleaning solution within the group. The investment has already paid off due to the reduced rejection-rate which is now around one per-cent.
