1 Professional Pilot Program at Lake Superior College (LSC) Enrollment Steps New Student Checklist: 1. Apply to LSC: Submit all required materials listed on the website or paper application. 2. When you receive your acceptance letter, you ll be invited to attend a SOAR session (Student Orientation/Accuplacer/Registration). At this session we will cover policy information, registration information, administer placement testing and registration for classes. 3. Meet with a Professional Pilot Advisor prior to semester start a. General advisor: Emily Chapinski (218) or e.chapinski@lsc.edu i. Handles questions about enrollment, cost, etc. b. Fixed Wing Program Advisor: Lis Hendrickson (218) or l.hendrickson@lsc.edu c. Eric Monson : Helicopter training questions: (218) or emonson@lakesuperiorhelicopters.com 4. You will also need to complete an FAA Medical Examination prior to entry into the program. You must pass a Class II Medical in order to fly at LSC. There is a list of Certified Medical Examiners at the end of this packet. 5. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements. Since September 11 th, 2001 the TSA has added a number of security requirements for people who wish to receive flight instruction. The process is different for U.S. citizens and non- U.S. citizens. a. U.S. citizens must provide the following to Kevin Kortuem: i. A valid unexpired U.S. passport, or ii. Original birth certificate and a government issued picture ID, or iii. Original certificate of birth abroad with raised seal and government issued ID, or iv. Original certificate of US citizenship with raised seal and government issued ID, or v. Original US naturalization certificate with raised seal and government issued ID. b. Non- U.S. citizens:
2 i. Please call Lis Hendrickson for more information at (218) or Careers in Aviation After earning FAA Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor Certificates, most pilots build their initial experience as flight instructors. After about two years of work, they may be eligible for many pilot positions such as: Regional Air Carrier Pilots Charter Pilots Helicopter Scenic Tour Pilots Helicopter Oil Rig Support Pilots The professional airplane or helicopter pilot is responsible for the safety of each flight. This includes, sound decision making, aircraft preflight checks to assure readiness for flight, flight route planning, weather checks, evaluation, and communication with air traffic control during flights. The professional pilot also manages aircraft speed, altitude and heading based on aircraft flight information. A pilot must make decisions on aircraft control for safe take off, landing and manage abnormal or emergency flight conditions that may occur over the course of the flight. A pilot must also oversee cargo and passenger loading and unloading to resolve any related problems. Financial Expectations While the Professional Pilot Program is probably the most fun a student will ever have in a classroom, it is also Lake Superior College s most expensive program. On the next couple of pages you ll find the current estimated flight fees for our upcoming academic year. Paying for flight time is the most difficult aspect of your financial obligations at LSC. In order to fly you must have money in your flight account. We will accept federal financial aid award letters, personal loan dollars, or personal funds. No student will be allowed to fly unless their flight account has adequate funding. It is important to note that Federal Financial Aid cannot be relied upon to fully cover your program flight costs, no matter what your financial situation, and you will need to find access to additional funding in order to cover these costs. Please contact Jennifer Vukelich at or j.vukelich@lsc.edu for information on how to add funds to your flight account at LSC. VA students: we will accept VA award letters or deposits of VA funds, personal funds, bank loan funds or financial aid award letters. Since many times VA checks come to you directly, we will not under any circumstances grant fly time based on non- official documentation.
3 Students who are using Veteran Funding should work closely with an advisor and the VA Certifying Official at Lake Superior College to be sure they understand how their benefits work at LSC, for the flight school it can be complicated at first. ALL FLIGHT FEES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE ON A TERM- BY- TERM BASIS. All students are responsible for the balances in their flight accounts. Do not assume your financial aid or VA dollars will cover the expenses in full. This cannot be stressed enough!
