What is the PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool? Guide to Climate Change on a Community level Introspective process that explores a community Begins with the people s knowledge and history of their community Helps focus a critical review of vulnerabilities of components of a community: Social, Economical, Environmental, and Structural Objective is to help Help Communities prepare for climate change now and in the future Narrow the focus of the community to its most sensitive and critical components
What is the PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool? Developed through the Regional Adaptation Collaborative (RAC) Initiative to support coordinated action towards advancing regional climate change adaptation decision-making. Adapted from Weather, Climate change and My Community: A Planning Workbook Original work by Memorial University for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Also in Partnership with the Emergency Measures Organization Utilizing the Sentinel Management Software Tool Very comprehensive and systematic approach to risk assessment
PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool What is it? Who can use it? Why does it work?
PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool What is it? Who can use it? Why does it work?
Who can use the PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool? Small Communities often without continuing resources Unfortunately dedicated funds for town planning and emergency measures are not always adequate Our approach will be to aid communities with the Planning Tool to better prepare for future planning Climate change planning can be overwhelming Climate change is dynamic Global impacts applied to a community Multifaceted issues that need to be focused into direct and local impacts.
Who can use the PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool? Beginning with Island Communities Souris, Mt. Stewart, North Rustico, Victoria among the first to begin work Pilot stage of the program will be completed by these four communities Aim is to complete work with these communities, producing a solid foundation for future participants. With the Community Risk Assessment Planning Tool being utilized independently in the form of a work book

PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool What is it? Who can use it? Why does it work?
PEI Community Risk Assessment and Planning Tool What is it? Who can use it? Why does it work?
Why does it work? It is educational. Climate change can be confusing and overwhelming; this tool presents climate change planning in a way that is simple and achievable. It is multi-faceted. It assesses climate change-associated risks to people, infrastructure, the economy and the environment. It provides resources. Data, mapping, expertise are provided to communities that might not otherwise have access. It thrives on community participation. Community members identify their own vulnerabilities, take responsibility for addressing them, and use the final report to conduct their own adaptation planning.
