8 A Vision for Waste Canada is a world leader in waste management. Canada s record on reducing and recycling waste is improved Consumer, municipal and industry awareness of and support for waste reduction and recycling is increased Costs are shifted from taxpayers to producers Waste is seen as valuable resource: the economic benefit from recycling is optimized and the economic burden of waste to landfill is minimized. 9 Current Priorities for CCME Extended Producer Responsibility o Continued implementation of the Canada wide Action Plan for EPR o Renewed efforts on packaging o Address challenges faced by remote and northern communities

10 Extended Producer Responsibility Phase 1: 94 legislated programs o Packaging and printed paper, electronics, household hazardous waste, and automotive products such as tires, car batteries and used oil Phase 2: 2017 o Construction materials, demolition materials, furniture, textiles and carpet, appliances

11 EPR in the North Canada s northern territories and remote regions of the provinces face unique challenges for implementing EPR and alternative waste management approaches. March 2015 Yellowknife Workshop o Identify opportunities and share best practices for the implementation of EPR and alternative approaches in the territories and northern/remote regions of the provinces.

12 Current Priorities for CCME Reducing waste from the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sector; construction, renovation and demolition (CRD)waste; and organic waste o Exploring gaps, barriers, challenges and opportunities for each of these waste streams. Identifying indicators and exploring options for assessing progress Collaborating with business, government, municipal and community partners

13 Indicators for Solid Waste Reduction Objective: To identify and define key performance indicators and explore options for assessing progress on improving Canada s record on reducing and recycling waste. o Leverage current tracking already done by jurisdictions o Enable a comprehensive Canada wide picture of jurisdictions actions o Complement the data collected through Statistics Canada s Waste Management Industry survey

14 Indicators for Solid Waste Reduction Focus: Per capita solid waste disposal Consultant report: A standard method that enables comparison of the per capita disposal information already collected by jurisdictions Next steps: Governments will pilot test this method and determine next steps for assessing progress on improving Canada s record on reducing and recycling waste.
