Since its foundation in 1967, Emerald Group Publishing Limited has grown to be one of the world s most important publishers of scholarly journals in business and management. In recent years Emerald, in common with most other publishers, has offered access to our journals online. For 2007, Emerald Management Xtra offers what we call an enhanced database. Positioned for business schools and management departments, Emerald Management Xtra contains a subjectfocused collection of more than 150 journals in management, business and librarianship; a full text archive of more than 60,000 papers; and abstracts of the world s top 300 journals in management. Most of our customers want to get quickly to journal content through a search and browse interface, which Emerald Management Xtra is designed to do. We provide fully Counter 2 compliant usage statistics for all our customers, and we help our Emerald Management Xtra customers with usage encouragement through on-the-ground and online training, with the support of a dedicated account manager. The Emerald Service Charter ensures that all queries are answered within one working day. 8 ACCESSING CONTENT Emerald s simple yet sophisticated search engine is supported by a number of unique features, all of which make accessing content quick, straightforward and effective. SEARCH AND BROWSING To ensure that users can quickly achieve results specific to their research, Emerald Management Xtra s custom-made search engine offers both quick and advanced search options. The advance search includes a number of fields to search across, and normal Boolean operators allow users to make their search as simple or complex as necessary. The browse function enables users to keep up to date with current developments at either a journal or subject level. Results Emerald Management Xtra allows searches of full text articles, reviews or both, simply by selecting the appropriate option. Results can be sorted according to relevance, date order, etc. Users can gain instant access to the full text of articles published by Emerald. Where a selected paper is a review and not published by Emerald, there are two options for retrieving the full text: 1. If the subscribing library holds the paper in digital form, the user should be able to obtain instant full text access (via library systems authentication). 2. If the subscribing library does not hold it in digital form, the user should be able to obtain instant access to the full text article through document delivery systems such as Infotrieve and the British Library. STRUCTURED ABSTRACTS Structured abstracts provide consistent article summaries to allow users to see whether an article is appropriate for their research and ensure that all of the abstracts follow a standard format, covering: DATABASE FUNCTIONALITY To facilitate the effective retrieval of the information most appropriate to the user s research, Emerald Management Xtra includes a number of features to aid the user: Standard English/American English results will be automatically displayed for both standard English and American spellings of the search criteria (e.g. labour and labor), ensuring that all results are displayed, regardless of origin Marked search hits users can create their own article listings by ticking boxes on the search results page a useful feature when preparing reading lists an article users can send links to relevant and interesting articles to a colleague or another PC for later use, reference or printing purposes OpenURL Technology the database has a Context-Sensitive Service which lets libraries combine electronic resources from several different services to function as a cohesive reference system Emerald Alerting Services these allow you to be kept up to date with a wide range of developments Table of Contents, subject areas, latest additions to the database, etc. via My Profile My Profile is your own personal area within the Emerald web site that enables you to create and manage e- mail alerts, sign up for newsletters and create marked lists.
