1 Wallingford Public Schools - HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OUTLINE Course Title: Business Principles and Management Course Number: 8163 Department: Business & Finance Grade(s): 12 Level(s): Academic Credit: ½ Course Description This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the essential elements of management. The course will introduce the student to the fundamental management functions including planning, organizing, implementing and controlling. These management functions will encompass practical applications of management theory. The course is designed with a skills based approach and focuses on: communication (oral, written, non-verbal and listening), problem solving, teamwork, decision making, conflict resolution, critical analysis and ethical reasoning. Students will be introduced to work related situations that will help foster the management skills necessary for a successful future. Required Instructional Materials Business Principles and Management, Everard and Burrow, Thomson Southwestern, Completion/Revision Date Revisions Approved by Board of Education on October 19, 2009 Mission Statement of the Curriculum Management Team The mission of the Career and Technical Education Curriculum Management Team is to ensure that students, as a result of their experiences in K-12, will demonstrate transferable skills, knowledge, and attributes for successful life management, employment, career development, post-secondary educational opportunities, and life long learning. Enduring Understandings for the Course Managers execute a business plan. Managers need information to make good decisions. Productive managers produce beneficial outcomes. Change is inevitable. Decision making is a necessary role of management. Decisions vary in importance and level of impact on the organization. All decisions carry consequences. All organizations require resources. Organizational resources require management. All organizational resources have a cost. An organization should utilize resources efficiently and effectively. All organizations need leaders. 2 Managers utilize multiple leadership styles. Leadership is the ability to influence individuals and groups to accomplish organizational goals. Communications are designed to achieve organizational goals. Effective communicators must be good listeners. There are a variety of organizational communications. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The student will: 1.1 Identify the goals of the organization. 1.2 Utilize the managerial functions to attain goals of the organization: Planning analyzing information and making strategic decisions Organizing allocating resources to complete operational goals Implementing execute management plans Controlling analyzing feedback and results of operation 1.3 Identify the roles in the management hierarchy. 1.4 Evaluate the characteristics of managers. 1.5 Recognize the dynamics of change that impact an organization. 4 2.0 Decision Making Decision making is a necessary role of management. Decisions vary in importance and level of impact on the organization. All decisions carry consequences. 2.1 Identify four steps decision makers use to solve problems: Identify the problem Determine possible solutions Analyze the solutions Select the best solution Analyze outcomes 2.2 Differentiate between proactive and reactive decision making. 2.3 Identify factors in decision making: Risk Timing Ethics/Values Consequences What factors affect decision making? 5 3.0 Organizing Resources All organizations require resources. Organizational resources require management. All organizational resources have a cost. An organization should utilize resources efficiently and effectively. 3.1 Identify the three types of organizational resources: A. Human B. Capital C. Natural 3.2 Analyze organizational resources to maximize productivity. 3.3 Create an organizational chart that defines authority, responsibility, and performance levels of all staff. 3.4 Analyze ways to evaluate job performance. 3.5 Recognize the impact of diversity in the organization.
