4 4 VILLEROY & OCH History History VILLEROY & OCH 5 Villeroy & och European cultural history made in Mettlach When François och founded a small ceramics business in udun-le-tiche in Lorraine in 1748, he could scarcely have imagined that his company would one day help to shape European cultural and industrial history. Since then, the company has not only influenced tableware, bath room and living styles but also developed significant products and production processes and, in addition, helped to democratise hygiene. The Villeroy and och families continue today to work actively for the company, which has become an international complete supplier of everything needed in the bathroom. The Old bbey fter its closure, Jean-François och took over the old enedictine abbey in Mettlach on the Saar. He built a modern tableware factory, opening up the way for industrial ceramic production. The headquarters of Villeroy & och are still to be found in the baroque building today. Vincent van Gogh Van Gogh painted a portrait of his close friend Eugène och entitled The Poet. The neo-impressionists nna and Eugène och were actively involved in the art scene and had contact to major artists such as Toulouse- Lautrec and Ensor. Helmut Newton Newton created a new spectacular advertising campaign in the 1980s for Villeroy & och. The Magnum range by Frog Design became one of the most successful bathroom ranges made in Germany. Luigi Colani Colani created a completely new bathroom concept for Villeroy & och, defining the bathroom for the first time as a living area. In the years that followed, this new approach was to exert a major influence on the entire industry.

Our commitment to the highest design standards is further manifested in internationally renowned partners such as Marcel Wanders, Roberto Capucci, Sebastian Conran, Luigi Colani, Steve Leung and Frog Design. n ever-renewable source of mutual inspiration. Henry van de Velde round part from wash bowls, Van de Velde also designed various tiles for Villeroy & och. Schinkel Fountain Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed a twobowl cast iron fountain for the grounds of the Old bbey in Mettlach a gift from the Prussian Crown Prince Frederick William to Jean-François och. Not far from it is the Old Tower, the oldest sacred building in the Saarland. Peter ehrens round In the early twentieth century, ehrens designed several geometrical tiles and tableware décors for Villeroy & och. josef Maria Olbrich round round the turn of the century, Olbrich designed tiles, wash bowls and tableware for Villeroy & och.

This unique treasure trove of knowledge and experience will form the basis for the completion of forward-looking projects in the future as well. Regardless of what kind of project is involved. Mettlach tiles Villeroy & och designed the first floor tiles in the world to combine wear-resistance with attractive design. The inspiration came from Roman floor mosaics that had been recently uncovered. revolutionary idea François och founded a company in udun-le-tiche, Lorraine, with a view to making ceramic tableware available to the public at large. The idea was completely novel at this time, when althasar Neumann was at the height of his fame. Villeroy & och Jean-François och joined forces with his former rival Nicolas Villeroy, who had gained considerable experience in décor and copperplate printing, to create a powerful company: Villeroy & och. Democratisation of hygiene n important contribution to modern hygiene and decisive progress in construction: new materials and processes permit the industrial production of bathtubs and toilets at an affordable price. Holland Tunnel Villeroy & och completed a major project, fitting out the Holland Tunnel connecting New York City and New Jersey with 10,000 m² of tiles: it can still be seen today.

8 12 VILLEROY & OCH Materials Ceramics Clay, kaolin, feldspar, quartz: over 267 years of experience Ceramics have always been the defining feature of the Villeroy & och story. The material has been re-interpreted over and over and continuously developed by the company: with a devotion to craftsmanship; with the latest production methods; and with an eye for details. Every year, new and exceptional ceramic products of the highest quality and durability are manufactured. One thing has remained unchanged, however: a fascination for a natural product that never ceases to amaze. The 349-room designer hotel by the international architects RTKL is coupled with an original and striking interior from Concept from Hong Kong to produce a dynamic overall concept combining design, art and music for its trend-loving guests. The hotel is remarkable for its spectacular installations, lively colours, unusual materials and the dynamic lighting concept. 21 38 VILLEROY & OCH Reference project Hotel & RESTURNT Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel, msterdam Industrial monument with wellness area The Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel in msterdam is as unusual as a hotel can be. The listed crane in the former shipyard was innovatively restored on the basis of an idea by the owner and project designer Edwin Kornmann Rudi in co-operation with I rchitecten in msterdam and the engineers from VDNDP bouwingenieurs and now houses three luxury suites. The elegant designer bathrooms are put together from different Villeroy & och bathroom collections. On the upper terrace there is even a SportX-Line whirlpool all at the dizzying height of 35 to 45 metres. The store is continuously reinventing itself and adapting to changing times. The architecture and interior have been modified to fit in with the demands of the different eras. It is not only the products on sale that are select and luxurious. ll of the public customer areas are stylishly designed with high-quality fittings. While the store was being modernised, the customer toilets were refitted by architect Udo Landgraf and engineers Trache IT with sanitary ware products from the veo and Loop & Friends collections from Villeroy & och. 23 42 VILLEROY & OCH Reference project Sport & Culture olshoy Ice Dome, Sochi Sanitary concept for 12,000 people One of the challenges in the planning of sites for large events is to integrate innovative architecture in order to attract tourists and to turn the site into a prestige object for the city or sports club concerned. One example is the olshoy Ice Dome in Sochi which was designed by the Mostovik architect s office for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Of even greater importance in stadiums is an optimised infrastructure and reliable supply system. 24 44 VILLEROY & OCH Reference project Health & Healthcare University Medical Center Groningen, UMCG Highest hygiene demands for hospitals The University Medical Center Groningen, or UMCG, has always played a leading role in the development of hospital architecture. The complex has a very long history dating back to the eighteenth century. Since then both the medical services and building structure have been continuously enlarged. In addition to the major architectural and urban development renewal, it is smaller changes, such as the modernisation of the WC areas, which ensure that the building meets the highest hygiene and cleanliness requirements. Since 2014, Interieurarchitectuur Hart and Royal HaskoningDHV from Groningen have been replacing all 2,000 WCs in the original building with innovative sanitary ware products from Villeroy & och that satisfy the highest hygiene demands.
