2 WELL. The new label of the European fittings sector. The global population is expected to exceed the 7 billion mark in The consequence: the demand for water for everyday life and personal hygiene will continue to rise as will that for agriculture and industrial processes. Saving resources: the challenge for the future. Even if there is no water shortage in some Central European countries, a shortage can no longer be ruled out here at certain times of year due to the climate changes. Higher heating costs are directly correlated to an increasing demand for water. For example, for the treatment and conveyance of drinking water 0.4 kw/m³ alone is needed. In addition, the CO 2 footprint is being permanently affected by the energy requirement for heating domestic water. The amount of energy needed to heat 1 m³ of hot water is approx. 34 kw. Facts that have given occasion to the European Commission making the efficiency of energy consumptionrelated products transparent to consumers throughout the sector within the context of the ecodesign strategy. WELL the decison-making aid for planners, architects, plumbers and consumers. Under the umbrella of EUnited, the European association of fittings manufacturers, a new classification system has been developed that provides planners, architects, plumbers and consumers with an evaluation system to refer to when assessing the water and energy consumption of sanitary fittings. V., No compromises in quality. The basis of classification of each fitting is adherence to the applicable European standards. This is tested and certified by an independent accredited testing institute (EN ISO /ICE 17025) in the course of type testing. This ensures that only those materials are used that are totally hygienic and whose functional reliability has been verified in endurance testing. Better planning of efficient, public sanitary facilities. Independent investigations have discovered that approx. 80 % of building overheads have to be spent on operation and maintenance in its lifetime. This is where investments in water and energy-efficient fittings quickly pay off. In addition to service and maintenance costs, water consumption and energy costs play a significant role in this. This is why these days buildings are classified according to»green Building Standards«, like LEED* and DGNB. WELL can contribute to this. Drinking water hygiene and saving water are not a contradiction in terms. The top priority is maintaining drinking water hygiene. Lower water consumption in single fittings does not contradict this. Indeed it is more to do with preventing stagnant water collecting in a pipe system by using suitable pipe work and specifically arranging the fittings in accordnace with frequency of use. Adherence to flow rates is to be planned with pipe sizes complying with DIN 1988 (in future: EN ). In this context, sufficient insulation of the pipe systems are also called for so that the temperatures required by DIN 1988 (in future: EN ) and the DVGW working sheet W 551 (German association for gas and water) can be upheld. Fittings with high flow rates do not offer any advantages when there are long periods of non-use. If the way the building is used dictates longer periods of non-use, fittings with automatic anti-stagnation flush are to be provided. *LEED = Leadership in Enviromental and Economic Design DGNB = German Sustainable Building Council 3

4 How does WELL classification work? Here is an overview. The new WELL label will provide more transparency and clarity wherever drinking water is used for food preparation or personal hygiene. By means of the classification, the user will be able to establish what the energy and water consumption is for various fittings. The only exceptions are the bathtub fittings and those for connecting domestic appliances that do not directly affect the water consumption. These include fittings for washing machines or dishwashers, or those for watering the garden The following fittings can be classified: Wash basin and bidet fittings Shower fittings WC flush systems Urinal flush systems Kitchen fittings There are three different labels:»home«,»public«and»upgrade«. Sanitary fitting requirements for the home are different to those for public and commercial areas. While at home comfort and the individual experience of well-being are at the forefront in the bathroom, in public sanitary facilities the emphasis is on the efficient use of water and above all hygiene. Accessories for draw-off and shower fittings are also classified at WELL, provided that they help to increase water and energy efficiency when combined with other components. Depending on the area of application, these components are termed»upgrade Volume«(water volume) or»upgrade Therm«(energy) and are of particular interest for retrofitting and modernisation. Of course, it is user habits that ultimately affect actual water and energy consumption. However, the WELL label demonstrates which reductions can be made. Requirement-led criteria. Regardless of whether for»home«,»public«or»upgrade«, wash basin fittings or shower fittings depending on the area of application and requirement different evaluation criteria are taken into account in the WELL classification of a sanitary fitting. For example, this may be the flow rate, temperature or time. Separate evaluation criteria apply to WC and urinal flushing systems. How is the WELL label to be read? The design of the WELL label is geared towards the energy efficiency labels already familiar from the domestic appliances sector. The WELL label has a maximum of two stars for each evaluation criterion. Therefore, the total for»home«(two criteria: volume and temperature) is a maximum of four stars; for»public«(three criteria: volume, temperature and time) a maximum of six stars and for»upgrades«a maximum of two stars in each case. An arrow shows how many stars each product has achieved for each criterion.»a«for maximum efficiency. A coloured bar for each star shows at a glance how many stars would be possible. If a fitting achieves the maximum number of stars, the classification arrow (overall classification) will point to the»a«bar for maximum efficiency. 5

6 Draw-off taps.»home«category. In the private sphere, the potential savings for wash basin, kitchen and bidet taps exists purely in terms of the flow volume and water temperature. The period of use does not play a role in this case, as the convenience of having constantly available water for individual requirements is the key factor. Modern technology allows the convenience of hot water and drinking water hygiene to be well combined with great water and energy efficiency. The special charateristic in evaluating kitchen taps: here, the water is not only needed for washing hands, but also primarily for filling up containers and washing dishes. To account for these special requirements greater flow rates apply in this case compared to wash basin fittings. Volume The evaluation. A maximum of two stars are awarded for each evaluation criterion. This means a maximum of four stars for taps in the»home«segment. Which taps can get which evaluations? Potential solutions are the use of appropriate jet regulators, regulating angle valves, fittings with economy buttons (that need to be active in default mode) or cartridges with a water saving position, which has to be exceeded when there is increased demand for water Pressure-independent, restrictive solution for wash basin and kitchen fittings (2 stars); bidet fittings are treated as wash basin fittings. The max. flow rates are 6 l/min for wash basin fittings and 9 l/min for kitchen fittings. The minimum flow rates to be achieved are 4 l/min for wash basin fittings and 6 l/min for kitchen fittings setting irrespective of flow (1 Star) The energy efficiency of mixers is increased if the required temperatures are generally set within a shorter adjustment period irrespective of the flow. This is ensured by single lever taps and thermostatic taps for example. In the case of thermostic taps, the temperature is set on a scale. For single lever taps, the temperature is adjusted by moving the lever without increasing the flow output. In the case of self-closing or sensor fittings, this can be carried out using a mixer lever or by turning the control element. Comment: In contrast, the required discharge temperature for two handle fittings can only be achieved by additionally mixing cold or hot water 6

However, this means that the flow volume and energy consumption is increased as a result (no evaluation points) limiter (2 stars) These are all devices that can be used to limit the temperature. These include thermostatic fittings with hot water stops that can be bridged or have fixed settings, or single lever taps and other mixers with devices for limiting the hot water mixed in, such as manual devices for limiting the open angle of the operating control Cold water fittings (2 stars) Draw-off taps exclusively for operation with cold water are evaluated as fittings with a temperature limit device. If operated as intended, no energy is needed for heating water. The fitting is to be labelled clearly as a cold water tap; for example, by marking it blue or or applying a character or symbol. Draw-off taps for hot or pre-mixed water (handle is labelled red or has no marking) are not evaluated, as energy consumption cannot be influenced by the tap itself. 7

As water and energy consumption are particularly dependent on the length of use that is, the period of time that the water is running the evaluation criterion of time is an additional factor to flow volume and temperature in the»public«segment. When longer periods of non-use are expected (e. g. school holidays) the use of taps with anti-stagnation flush activation are recommended, if no other way of regularly changing the water can be provided. 9

10 Shower fittings.»home«category. With the right shower taps, water and energy efficiency can also be increased at home without having to compromise on convenience and comfort. Every user is free to decide to increase the flow volume to above the classification limit depending on their own personal requirements. However, when the valve is reopened the economy setting must be automatically reset (default position). Leaving the economy range, however, needs to be a deliberate act. The evaluation. 14 Upgrade option.»volume«category. If a sanitary system is to be put together using several components there is the option of obtaining more WELL stars by upgrading. This is a necessary part of a coherent classification system, which also takes into account the option of retrofitting existing systems. Furthermore, a WELL upgrade is also an important tool for bringing existing systems up to a higher level of efficiency. The following principle applies: conformity characteristics in one category can only be evaluated once. Example: a»home«wash basin tap with a 1 star flow rate classification and a 1 star temperature classification (C) can be combined with a regulating angle valve with a 2 star classification. The system will improve to 3 stars (B classification) and not to 4. The volume* (flow) category is limited to components in sanitary draw-off taps that are not part of a delivery unit. This means that if a shower tap is supplied without a shower head, this can be combined with a rainshower shower head of 18 l/min or a sports shower head of just 9 l/min. There are numerous components that can be used to obtain stars in the upgrade of a sanitary system. Examples for wash basin fittings: flow regulators, regulating angle valves, and jet regulators, etc.; examples for shower fittings: shower heads, hand-held showers, shower hoses, and flow regulators, etc. * At WELL the term volume is used as a uniform term for sanitary draw-off taps, even though the technically correct term here is flow (rate in l/min). 14

16 Upgrade option.»therm«category. If the discharge temperature of a tap is limited, this will have a direct effect on energy consumption. This therefore directly concerns the requirements of the ErP directive 1 of the EU, which demands a better information policy for energy consumption-related products. This does not only include measures that provide set limits, but also those that can be exceeded consciously through user intervention. 18 WC flush systems.»home«category. Approx. 27 % of water consumption in an average household is caused by flushing toilets. By taking intelligent measures, large volume reductions can quickly be made and without affecting any functions. Investigations have shown that in a 4 person household over 50 % water can be saved by exchanging a 9 litre cistern for a 6 litre cistern with short flush economy button. Important to know: it is always the cistern system unit plus relevant control button that is classified and corresponding WELL points awarded. Many cisterns can be equipped with single flush (no classification points), with control buttons with start/stop function (1 star) or with dual flush technology (2 stars). The benefit of the dual flush technology is that in economy mode the exact amount required is flushed.
