After taking business and information technology (I) classes in high school, Dagmawi decided confidently to focus on a career in I. My education in the technical field helped me acquire knowledge that has been very beneficial to my life and career goals. Dagmawi recently started his postsecondary studies at George Mason University, majoring in information technology. It is no technicality that success is in the future for Dagmawi! Network and Computer ystems Administrators Computer networks are critical parts of almost every organization. Network and computer systems administrators are responsible for the day-to-day operation of these networks. hey organize, install, and support the organization s computer systems, including networks, intranets, and other data communication systems. Although some employers require just a postsecondary certificate, most require a bachelor s degree in a field related to computer or information science. 2 CAREER CLUER: Information echnology Keeping Pace with a High-Growth Field he Virginia Employment Commission ranks the information technology field as one of the fastest-growing in the Commonwealth, with employment levels projected to double statewide within this current decade. High school studies helped Dustin Grimes secure a place in this dynamic field. As a junior and senior at Herndon High chool, Dustin took classes in word processing, accounting, and information systems. he courses I took in high school were a great start on the pathway to success, Dustin says. [hey] helped me in the transition from high school to college by providing me with essential knowledge that I could apply to my college work, and later, in my professional career. Dustin s professional career currently finds him as a network engineer with a DC-area software consulting company, but he s still learning he s just a few months away from completing his studies at trayer University. Cyber ecurity Engineer Cyber security is a specialized field of engineering that focuses on the security aspects in the design of systems that need to be able to deal robustly with possible sources of disruption, ranging from natural disasters to malicious acts. In a world connected and powered by billions of mobile devices, computer networks, and industrial systems, there is a critical need to secure and protect individuals and corporations, the military and government, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and our national infrastructure. Part of Alex s preparation for his position came through information systems classes at Mountain View Alternative High chool. My high school courses, plus having the chance to job shadow with Facilities Management, were the paths to my current job. ignificantly, Alex took those classes as an adult student, and he hopes his commitment to education sets a positive example for his three children. Education is important to me because I have lived the life of someone with little education. I am trying to model for my own kids the importance of an education because I don t want them to have to go through what I have.
