Jenifer is currently studying to be a nurse at Marymount University and served as a long-term substitute in the dental careers class at Falls Church Academy! Jenifer says, he Academy classes I took introduced me to a variety of healthcare options, while providing me with the experiences and certifications that allowed me to work in a dental office. I owe my success in nursing school to my Academy classes and I hope to someday return to teach an Academy class. Registered Nurse Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Registered nurses must also be licensed. Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow percent from to, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will occur for a number of reasons, including an increased emphasis on preventative care; growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity; and demand for healthcare services from the baby boomer population, as they live longer and more active lives. Jason s goal is to be a medical doctor and open his own practice. One step in achieving this goal was to take business classes in high school that would provide Jason with skills he could use to get a job in college, and to achieve his ultimate goal of a business owner and doctor. Looking back, I m really glad that I took business classes. aking those courses helped me get my first job at Apple Federal Credit Union. I learned a lot while in high school; I m applying what I learned in my business classes to my college life and work place. Currently Jason is working part-time as a bank teller while completing is degree at George Mason University. Family Physician/Business Owner We rely on physicians to diagnose our illnesses, treat us when we are suffering and advise us on how to live a happy and healthy life. Family physicians often provide the first point of contact for people seeking healthcare. hey assess and treat a wide range of conditions, from sinus and respiratory infections to broken bones. Family and general physicians typically have a base of regular, long-term patients. Many family physicians work in small private offices or clinics, often assisted by a small staff of nurses and other administrative personnel. his type of operation allows the individual to be both a medical professional and an entrepreneur. Pharmacists Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who practice in pharmacy, in the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use. he role of the pharmacist has shifted from a dispensary role to being an integrated member of the health care team directly involved with patient care. Pharmacists must understand the biochemical mechanisms of action of drugs, drug uses, and therapeutic roles, side effects and potential drug interactions of medications. Among the personal qualities firefighters and EM s need are mental alertness, self-discipline, courage, mechanical aptitude, endurance, strength, and a sense of public service. While still a senior at Chantilly Academy, Ashley began working at a doctor s office (thanks to a lead from her medical health technologies teacher). he skills I acquired from those courses greatly helped me to perform my duties on the job, Ashley recalls. After graduation, she continued her healthcare studies with a four-year degree program in exercise science but she still appreciates her high school courses for laying the groundwork for her career. he medical health technologies classes I took in high school gave me the skills and the knowledge I needed to begin working in the medical field. hese classes also helped me to make an informed choice as to what I wanted to study after high school. 10 CAREER CLUER: Health ciences It s All About miles he dental careers class Amber Weems took as a senior at West Potomac Academy equipped her with a great deal of firsthand knowledge of dental practices along with a state dental radiograph certification. oon after, Amber was able to put that knowledge to work as a dental assistant. After my course, I felt very comfortable working in a dental office. I found that I was already knowledgeable about many of the tasks; I understood WHY we did things, so I wasn t just following a procedure. Amber is now about to begin studies to become a dentist. I feel I have an advantage, because I ve had hands-on experience [in dentistry], so I know what I m in for. AMBER WEEM tudent/ubstitute eacher High chool: West Potomac Academy/Mt. Vernon High chool CE Program tudied: Dental Careers Additional tudies/raining: West Potomac Academy (Dental Radiology afety Certification), Longwood University (Biology) Dental Assistant Dental assistants may perform tasks at a dentist s office ranging from cleaning instruments to taking X-rays. With the right background, a high school graduate can go directly to work as a dental assistant, and can take an exam to become a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). Once in the field, a person can continue studying to become a dental hygienist or even a dentist.
