6 Data growth: Requiring efficient solutions to protect rising data volumes Organizations today are experiencing tremendous data growth, with data volumes increasing anywhere from 40 to 60 percent a year 4. Many organizations are looking to leverage that data to address key business goals. By applying business intelligence and analytics to data, organizations can help improve the customer experience, increase operational efficiency and reduce risks. Backing up and successfully recovering such large amounts of data presents significant challenges for IT groups. Not only do they need to provide sufficient storage capacity to accommodate growth, they also need to accelerate the frequency of backups, minimize the potential performance impact experienced by users and avoid having data offline when users need it. More than 50 percent of all installed workloads today are running as virtual machines, according to one estimate. Increasingly, those environments also include mission-critical applications. Organizations are virtualizing databases, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and key line-of-business applications in addition to messaging, collaboration and other business applications.
