30 MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT Media & Entertainment courses in focus Lucy Lowe DIPLOMA OF SCREEN AND MEDIA Date completed: December 2012 St Leonards Campus What was your goal when you enrolled in the course? To gain fulltime employment in the television industry TESTIMONIAL Currently I am employed full-time at the Nine Network in NewsPromos as an editor where I am within arm s reach of becoming a promo producer. I work in a small team of four, and three of us were educated at the Northern Sydney Institute s Film and TV unit. I defi nitely wouldn t be living the dream had I not attended the Northern Sydney Institute. I can t quite fi nd the right words to express the gratitude I have for all the wonderful teachers at the St Leonards Campus. I know very well that I would not have even been considered for the job, had I not been taught at the Northern Sydney Institute

31 Case Study TEDxNORTHERNSYDNEYINSTITUTE In August 2013, the Northern Sydney Institute became part of an international movement dedicated to sharing innovative ideas when it hosted TEDxNorthernSydneyInstitute on at the St Leonards Learning and Innovation Campus. As the fi rst TAFE Institute to be granted a license for a TEDx event, the Northern Sydney Institute seized the opportunity to inspire and involve staff and students. Talented students from fl oristry, carpentry, event management, and fi lm and television were given the chance to contribute to the TEDx culture of inspired learning and shared knowledge. The entire event was staged and recorded in the St Leonards Campus broadcast quality studio on campus with students making up the production crew. Lachlan Robertson, from the Certifi cate IV in Screen and Media course, gained invaluable practical experience which contributed to his assessment. During the event, he rotated between the roles of director, fl oor manager, camera operator, audio director and vision mixer; all under the guidance and instruction of industry professionals. Ever since he can remember Lachlan Robertson has had a fascination with cameras, lighting and television. The Northern Sydney Institute has a great reputation in the industry and the facilities that we learn in are of the highest quality. The course has the theoretical foundation that leaves you feeling confi dent in your knowledge and also offers the practical learning experience to be better prepared for the workplace, he says. Margaret Purcell, Head Teacher of Film and Television, said that working on world recognised events, such as TEDx, gives students an insight into the realities of the industry and the opportunity to connect with people who can help them on their journey. Thanks to the effort, enthusiasm, and skill of the staff and students who worked on the event, recordings of TEDxNorthernSydneyInstitute are now available to a worldwide audience on the TEDx YouTube channel. For Lachlan, who hopes to continue on to diploma level next semester, the experience was great fun and further fuelled his passion to continue pursuing his goals in fi lm and television. 29
