It is with great pleasure that I bring you my first newsletter. As you can see there has been a few changes, I welcome any feedback or suggestions on the new format. My apologies for the delay in this first newsletter, for now on the newsletter will be published on the first Friday of every month. 3 Membership Renewals It s that time of year when we need to dig into our pockets and pay membership fees. Club and affiliated ANSA and FCA fees are due on 1 July 2010 and must be paid promptly to ensure that your benefits of membership are preserved. If you are not financial you run the risk of missing out on competition participation and possible claims for records etc and very importantly you are not insured under the NSW Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme. So do yourself and the club a favour and pay your fees promptly. The Committee has increased membership fees marginally for this coming year. In these times of ever increasing costs it was a necessity to ensure the club can meet its financial obligations. Fees for ANSA membership have not changed. FCA membership fees have not changed. (See the attached SSAFA membership form) A membership renewal form is attached. Please ensure that all details are completed before the form is returned to the club. If you have any queries concerning membership fees then contact John Burgess on Your Membership: - On rejoining, you will have until the end of AUGUST 2010 to become financial. If you are not financial after August 2010 the below mentioned rules will apply. You may not weigh any fish for the club open boards, ladies or juniors. You may not weigh any fish for the club boat points. (saltwater or freshwater) You may not claim a club masters record. You may not claim ANY ANSA records. You may not claim ANY FCA records. You will NO LONGER receive a Club Newsletter. BOAT STORAGE / CLUB HOUSE HIRE FEES Boat storage fees have also increased from $250 to $300 per annum per boat as from 1 July Boat owners are reminded that it is still their responsibility to mow the lawn under their boats and to keep the area tidy. Boat storage fees must be paid before 31 July 2010 otherwise there is a prospect your spot will be allocated to another boat owner. The club house is still available for hire by members at the discretion of the Committee. Club house hire fees will remain at $125 per function which includes a $50 refundable deposit. In respect of club house hiring by friends and family of Club members (at the discretion of the Committee) the hiring fee will remain at $175 per function which includes a $75 refundable deposit. 5 Fishing for Sick Kids 2010 This year s Fishing For Sick Kids will be held at the Bowlers Club in the city on Saturday 4th September Address: 95 York Street. The night will start with pre dinner drinks at 6:00pm. Ticket holders on the night will have access to FREE underground parking at 168 Clarence St. Carpark has only 1.60 metres clearance (no big 4wd with roof racks). Approx 60 car spots are available. First in best dressed. For those that don t want to drive home, accommodation can be prearranged at the Grace Hotel which is just down the road. Address: 77 York St Contact: Due to renovations there will only be 150 tickets sold this year so get in early, book a table of ten and have a great night. Tickets will be $ per head which includes canapés on arrival at 6:00pm, a three course meal. Beer, wine, champagne and soft drinks all night and an open bar from 10:00pm. (no doubles or shots) The entertainment will again be 1st class. For those who want to book or buy raffle tickets please contact me on the number below or . Raffle tickets will be $ each for a prize of $10,000 CASH. That s right, TEN THOU- SAND DOLLARS. Only 250 tickets will be sold. 18 My first trip to lake Lyell By: Phil Festa On a mild autumn morning, we met at the clubhouse at 5am. Even though I was looking forward to catching my first trout, I was a bit apprehensive towards the expected cold weather, which had greeted previous members, who have attended the Lake Lyell convention. Just in case I packed myself a few extra jumpers, a beanie and gloves. It took us 2 hours to get to our first stop breakfast at the diner, 10 minutes out of Lake Lyell. This was like a last supper for me, as I thought I would starve on this trip. Boy was I wrong, but more on this later. After a big breakfast, we filled up with some firewood from the servo and headed off to our campsite. Once there, as I watched on (Joe and I decided earlier in the piece, he would do all the site specifics as well as cooking and I would catch the fish), Joe pitched our tent on the exclusive waterfront site. Well it would have been 10 years ago, when the water was 10 metres higher. After the tent was up, the stubbies came out and I m not talking about Joe s green shorts (wasn t cold enough yet). After a few beers and meeting a few of the fellow anglers, we decided to have a lunchtime fish. We headed down to the bank (on our doorstep) and had a few casts. It started well with Brian scoring 2 nice trout on plastics. It was a couple more hours before I caught my first trout for the team, a beautiful specimen 415mm. As this was a lean year for trout fishing, this was one of the bigger fish caught during the tournament. Not bad for an apprentice. As the sun began to set, we headed back to camp, where Joe kept his side of the bargain and cooked up a feast with a bit of help from the ladies, Tori and Emma. The night ended with more than a few drinks and stories around the camp fire. cooking to do that night. Well the cooking part was never in doubt, they returned to shore a few hours later empty handed. They definitely saved the best feast till last. Stan and Joe cooked up a Mediterranean extravaganza. By the end of it everyone was well and truly stuffed. We then headed to the Charity Auction, where there were a lot of bargains to be had. Joe won a fully signed grand final Sydney FC jersey for $250. As per the previous evening, the rest of the night was spent round a camp fire, with plenty of drinks and stories of the fish that were caught and of course not caught. A special thanks goes out to the boys from Botany Bay Sportfishing Fishing Club who provided the music for the night, even though their camp site was several hundred metres away and a good thing it was, as their camp fire, lets just say, lit up the northern sky. In the end our club didn t do too bad. Tori came runner up in the ladies section and Brian won the lure casting. Overall the club came third. Considering there were only 9 of us, it was a good effort. There were 101 competitors and 85 fish caught overall (Numbers of fish caught were down on previous years). The weather was a lot better than I anticipated. The days were warm and the nights bearable and I definitely didn t starve (I put on 3kilos). Can t wait to get back there next year, to try and beat the Sea Bees on there own turf and to defend my title of biggest trout for SSAFA (he he). Hopefully a few more members can make the trip. You definitely won t regret it. The night was not as cold as I thought, we woke up to a sunny morning and had a huge breakfast professionally cooked by the Burkes. After breakfast we headed down to the bank for another days fishing. Again the going was tough with only Brian scoring a fish from the bank. By this time Stan had arrived (with his boat) and was hijacked by a red head in green stubbies. 19 Fishing Report: April / May By: Tony Steiner Bluewater Wide: With the change of the seasons on us the warmer waters are still hanging on along with the Dollies & the Kingfish, not to mention the Marlin. The change of season also marks the return of the Yellow Fin Tuna and their friends with catches of 50kg plus already being seen. A few sharks are also being caught. Bluewater in Close: Stripe Tuna continue to make a dull day a little more exciting. Large Flatties up to 3kg and Mowong from 1 to 2 kg are becoming the regular catch only 1 or 2 km out from land. Snapper are also on the bite with some good catches being taken from Long Reef to South Coast, including nice pan size reds in the Harbour & Botany Bay. Average size is around 1 to 3kg & up to 5kg. Estuary: Bream in huge numbers and size, Flatties, Whiting, Salmon & Taylor are on everywhere from the Bay to the Cooks and Georges rivers. Trevors and Luderick are starting to come back in numbers with good catches being taken around the Sticks in the Bay and near Watts Reef. Jewies are in good numbers for those who are brave enough to venture out in the cold night air. Rocks & Beach: Salmon, Tailor, Whiting & Bream are coming on for the beach scene with rocks producing good Black Fish, Pigs, Salmon & Taylor. Freshwater: Good sized Carp and Yellow Belly is being caught in the rivers out West along with a few Murray Cod. Trout of reasonable eating size are on the bite for the Fly fisho s in the rivers. Andy caught this jewie on the Gold Coast at Christmas, whilst my dad was pointing to where other boats were fishing saying that was the place. I caught this snapper last winter. I took my time in the lure selection, which Andy laughed at. I hooked up within a couple of casts and Andy had to eat his words and then casually changed to the squid. My 10 year old brother Tavis was over the moon to when he caught his first mac. Could that smile be any bigger? Page 24
