Silicon Valley Silicon Valley is located on the San Francisco, California, peninsula. At the beginning of the 20 th century this area was mainly agricultural, dominated by vast orchards. As it was a wonderful sight when in spring the valley was covered with blossoms of many colours, it was given the name Valley of Heart s Delight. Everything changed in the 1930s with Fred Terman. He was a professor at Stanford University s department of electrical engineering, near San Francisco. It troubled him that his graduates could not find employment in California, but had to go to the East to get a job. Fred Terman decided to make the Valley of Delight into the world s high-tec centre. The US Forces were interested in radio engineering for military reasons and Terman was successful in obtaining money for research. With this money, Terman was able to attract brilliant students and to establish new research departments. The professor not only taught his students, but he also encouraged them to start their own companies in the valley. Two of Terman s graduates followed his advice: Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. In 1939, they founded a firm, the Hewlett-Packard Company. Today, Hewlett-Packard is one of the world s largest producers of computers and electronic equipment. It currently employs more than 80,000 people world-wide and has sales of more than $6 billion per year. In the 1980s the term Silicon Valley was used because the most important products, the semiconductor chips, are made of silicon.
