Our well respected, APA accredited graduate program prepares students to provide socially relevant, culturally sensitive psychological services, and to become leaders in their profession. Graduates of our program are well prepared to meet the increasingly complex demands of service as a psychologist in today s healthcare environment.

3 The Program In the first year, students begin to build their knowledge base of the fundamentals of psychological science, clinical evaluation and intervention. A first-year practicum integrates academic learning with supervised practical training from the very start of the program. In the second year, students gain expertise in assessment and research methods. Clinical skills become increasingly sophisticated through extensive practicum experience at one of several Wright Institute clinical service centers, or at one of the approved external training sites. In the third year, students complete course work, and further integrate and develop professional knowledge through a highly specialized and very rigourous third-year practicum. They shape the basic Wright Institute program by choosing electives that reflect their areas of special interest to expand and strengthen their clinical skills. In the fourth year, students write their dissertation. If desired they may take additional courses and/or engage in an additional practicum. In the fifth year, students attend and complete their internship training. At The Wright Institute, we educate clinicians to society clinicians who bring a deep awareness of the social and cultural context to the practice of psychology.

4 In addition to more than ninety external training sites, We offer eight exclusive training programs available only to our students. They provide opportunities in advocacy, assessment, health psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy among others. The Curriculum The curriculum for our Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology is carefully designed so that students systematically acquire progressively sophisticated skills, knowledge, and clinical capabilities. This developmental approach to learning builds on a solid foundation of research, assessment techniques, and theoretical knowledge. Coursework is integrated with practical experience all three years of the academic residency and the overall goal is to apply what students learn to the clinical realm. The Case Conference is the heart of The Wright program, providing a dynamic learning forum in which students develop and integrate theory, techniques and reflective judgment. These small group seminars are led by accomplished educator-practitioner psychologists and meet weekly over the course of two years. Students discuss theory, technique, case formulation, clinical placements, supervision, coursework, and professional development. Our curriculum educates and prepares students for the multiple roles of the modern psychologist - including clinician, supervisor, faculty, consultant, and more, allowing them to choose fulfilling work amid the expanding healthcare field.

5 The Learning Environment We believe in creating a learning alliance between faculty and students that is characterized by trust, respect, empathy, and mutual inquiry. Although serious and challenging, the learning environment at The Wright Institute is warm, supportive, collegial, and collaborative. Our faculty members are chosen for their practical expertise, their theoretical sophistication, and their ability to integrate theory with a hands-on approach to actual clinical situations. The educational program provides many opportunities for student mentoring by faculty and clinical supervisors. Faculty and clinical supervisors make themselves available for advice and counsel to support the student s educational process. Our doctoral students come from a wide variety of academic, professional, and socio-cultural backgrounds and are carefully selected from a large pool of applicants. Students are diverse, engaged, supportive, self-aware, intellectually driven, and perform well in an academically rigourous program. Wright graduates hold an impressive list of positions and leadership roles. They become part of a highly valued lifelong professional network and often remain a part of our community as supervisors, consultants, or training experts. In its most recent review the American Psychological Association (APA) awarded The Wright Institute s Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology its highest rating: seven years of continued accreditation.

6 The Setting The Wright Institute is located in Berkeley, California just a block from the University of California campus.
