1 The History of the Organizational Structure within the Division of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost as it relates to the Student Information System This document outlines the history of the organizational structure of the Division of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (SVPAAP) as it relates to the Student Information System (SIS) and the coding structure used within that application. While there perhaps is a correlation between existing UM unit structures, like the Financial Records System (FRS) or the UM Unit Organizational structure, this document is not intended to outline those relationships Background: What is now called the Division of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (SVPAAP) has gone through three major reorganizations since the 1960 s. Initially, there were -level entities that were overseen by deans who reported directly to the Provost. In 1972, these colleges were called divisions and continued to report to the Provost. In 1986, the divisions were changed back to being called colleges. The overriding principal is that regardless of what the units overseen by the Deans were called, the Deans have always reported directly to the Provost. The following describes the three structures. Structure I (Prior to 1972) Prior to 1972 the organization of the Academic Affairs division was a simple college structure. The colleges, overseen by deans, reported directly to the Provost. These colleges had undergraduate majors and graduate programs aligned under them. Examples include: the of Arts & Science (01); the of Business & Public Administration (02); the of Agriculture (00). Division of Academic Affairs s - overseen by Deans (SIS-UCM) Majors reporting directly to the colleges (SIS-UMP) Structure II ( ) In March of 1972 the division of Academic Affairs headed by the Provost was reorganized into a division/college structure, with the divisions headed by deans, reporting directly to the Provost. The divisions and the colleges had undergraduate majors and graduate programs aligned under each. A few examples of this new structure include: the Division of Arts & Humanities (53); the Division of Human and Community Resources (54); the Division of Undergraduate Studies (55) with the of General Studies (20) reporting to division 55 ; the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences(52). All of the divisional codes were in the 50 series. Division of Academic Affairs Divisions overseen by Deans (code 50 series) (SIS-UCM) Majors reporting directly to the divisional level (SIS-UMP) s reporting directly to the divisional level (SIS-USM) Dadmin/all/datamgmt/History of the SVPAAP Org Structure for SIS Page 1
2 Majors reporting to the college level (SIS-UMP) Structure III (1986 present) In 1986 the Division of Academic Affairs became known as the Division of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, SVPAAP. It was reorganized again into a college/school structure, with colleges reporting directly to the Provost and schools reporting to the Dean of a college. Almost all of what had been divisions (series 50) were changed to colleges under the new structure. For example, the Division of Undergraduate Studies (55) became the of Undergraduate Studies (25). The of General Studies was done away with and the major of General Studies now reported directly to the of Undergraduate Studies. Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (SVPAAP) s - overseen by Deans (SIS-UCM) Major report to colleges (SIS-UMP) Schools - none exist as of Fall 2004 (SIS-USM) In the late 1990s the Office of Data Administration began mapping majors and programs to academic departments in the UM Unit Bridge. This is the only OIT maintained application where this mapping is kept. Examples of organizational coding structures: The following illustrates the three structures under which SIS has operated. As of August 2004, there are no codified schools. All colleges have zeroes (00) for the school codes. In 1986, the name School was first used for a college level unit - the School of Public Affairs (college code 24). The name of the School was changed to the School of Public Policy in Since 1986, several other colleges have changed their names to School of The following data is from the current SIS-UCM Utility Table (8/17/04).
