20 Need for Graduate Programs The MS is becoming the new BS 15 25% of STEM BS graduates are going right into MS or PhD Programs nationally About 50% of STEM BS graduates will have a graduate degree within 10 years nationally Graduate students are great mentors for undergraduates Research keeps faculty up to date and energized We want our graduates to have best advantage they can have in the workplace (management) Need professors for the future

21 The Role of Tech STEM graduates (Sci, Tech, Engr, and Math) The US will graduate 3 million STEM graduates over the next decade BUT the US will need 4 million graduates 60% of those that enter intending to get a STEM degree DON T ever complete the major Within years 80% of the highest paying jobs will require STEM degrees In 10 years the majority of new jobs will require a college degree of some kind

22 14% of PetE BS degrees in US during from Montana Tech ~9% of PetE BS degrees in the US were from Montana Tech over the past 10 years Disproportionate number of Tech grads in leadership positions (due to the 1980 s) Tech s Leads in Petroleum Engineering Graduates

23 Some DMB Thoughts Regarding Tech and the Bakken Immediate need for domestic infrastructure Eventually engineering education via distance The need for an educated workforce will come as the play fully develops Need for product transportation engineers in the future along with nurses, teachers, accountants Tech can help with this by being strong and mission focused

24 Points to Make at MPA Meeting Universities (Tech included) depend on private support to maintain quality programs Wyoming lost PetE in the 80 s It is hard to find PetE, mining, geophysical, safety, faculty members We need endowments to weather ups and downs We are a cheap date need to change the view angle of Tech in Montana and nationally Invest while everyone is doing well Faculty positions are the priority

25 Additional Points to Make at MPA Meeting MPA/Industry need to partner with Tech on a research agenda and then go to the State of Montana Legislature go in with the match Why doesn t Montana have an Energy Center? Key on topics that include, fracking (MBMG), how to burn coal cleaner, retrofit power plants, modeling of resource plays Why let others do the work in MT? Tech has much more than PetE see?
