What is Cloud Compu)ng?

What is the cloud IT as a service Cloud allows access to services without user technical knowledge or control of suppor)ng infrastructure Best describe in terms of what happened to electrical power over 100 years ago Now computers are simple devices connected to the leader cloud Data processing, storage and sotware applica)on that used to run locally are now being supplied by big central compu)ng sta)on, They are becoming in essence compu5ng u5li5es

The Grid approach Urgent compu)ng in Scien)fic compu)ng and Business has pushed for on- demand access to large amounts of computa)onal resources or need to tune their run)me demands. Grid technology enables resource sharing amongst various organiza)ons. Grid resource management, however, is op)mized towards fair usage. On- demand access to Grid resources is difficult to achieve in prac)ce, even if mul)ple Grids are available.

Why Grid failed to provide on- demand access to compu)ng resources Grid virtualiza)on Uniform access to compu)ng and storage resources Discovery of poten)al compu)ng resources Provide security mechanism (AAA) But did not address how compu)ng is performed, it was let to the local resource managers (Grid design was suppose to be not intrusive)

Why Grid failed to provide on- demand access to compu)ng resources Challenges When a task end up on the Grid compu)ng resource there is a fair chance for a failure to occur missing lib wrong version of the libs different configura)on different OS version

How Grid approach delivers QoS Service Level Delivery not part of the original grid vision Absence of central control No Easy way to enforce SLM and SLD

Tradi)onal ways of provisioning resources

Solu)on 1: Scale up Expand your Infrastructure! Buy new servers, increase your sotware costs, provision more datacenter capacity!!

Solu)on 2: Scale out Look to the cloud! Pay for the bandwidth and server resources that you need. When your push is done then turn the whole thing off! The Three Reasons to Cloud Compute : hgp:// annota)on_id=annota)on_308603&feature=iv&src_vid=sgujaizkwre&v=oibkmjrrdjq
